It makes sense financially for companies to design first for the ps2 and then port to Xbox and/or Gamecube, but it also leads to Xbox users to feel a little short-changed.

It is easy money for companies to start with the platform that has the largest installed user base, then do a few filter passes, add some lighting effects and a couple other bells and whistles and release it on the more powerful consoles.

I imagine it is a lot easier to add a little graphical flair to games designed for ps2 than it is to take a game that is too much for the ps2 to handle and remove a lot of code. I heard it was really difficult for the developers of Splinter Cell to port it from Xbox to ps2.

Yes the user base is for now in the PS2 corner but that doesn't mean you can't program the game for XBOX capabilities and then port down to the PS2.

Or it might be easier the other way around since building a game on Xbox is easier, quicker, and less expensive..... I think Sega Sports games for example are ported from Xbox to PS2.

who knows though... developers really don't let much info out regarding this stuff.

Yeah, I suppose that could also be the case. Everything I have heard, though, points to it being harder to design for Xbox and downport it to the ps2.

Splinter Cell is one example I used above, but that may have had more to do with the complex lighting effects than anything else. Also, I didn't play any of the Sega Sports games on ps2 this year or last, but I have read several times that last year's WSB was crap compared to its Xbox cousin.

It sucks that a lot of companies design first for ps2 and then port to the Xbox because it results in hardly any multiplatform games taking advantage of the graphical capabilities of the X, but it seems to also result in more consistent quality too, meaning one game does not usually look or play worlds better on any one console.
