I'm absolutely loving this game. I would give it about an 8 out of 10. I have The Show, and I haven't really touched it since I started playing 2K8.
Sure it has its share of problems, but I'm really loving the gameplay. The pitching and fielding are just outstanding in my opinion, and it makes every game "feel" different. You really have to focus during every pitch and for every ball that is hit. I also love the fact that the shadow of the ball will disappear if your infielder or outfielder turns his back to the ball to start running. I had a play last night where I jumped at the wall to rob a homerun, and the ball bounced off of my glove and over the wall. It was awesome.
This is far from a perfect game, but I think the reason everyone was (or still is) down on this game early on is because you can't just pick it up and be good at it right away. There is a steep learning curve, especially when pitching, and that is what makes me keep coming back to it. It's a great game, really, and it's a shame that so many people read the negative impressions posted here and gave up on it so early.
