To steal second base, I simply hit the "X" button. I too was having problems with my runner taking off for second base. Now, I'm not sure what happens if you have runners on 1st and 2nd, and you want to have your guy on 2nd to steal 3rd......I'm thinking maybe the guy on first will also attempt to steal second. But the "X" button works great when you just have a runner on first.

I always use the "signal steal" method. I get my lead then hit up on the D pad. He goes everytime.....

I try that all the time, but they always throw to first and I have been picked off a few times. I guess I just have to time it better.

Yeah they throw over a lot, but you have to hit the right trigger button to retreat your runner back to the bag. The minute you see the pitcher start to spin to 1st, hit the right trigger button.
I struggled with this when I first got the game because I was used to the runner automatically going back to 1st base. Now I know I have to get him back.

good tips.
Im not 100% sure but i think that if you hit up on the D pad then the "jump"(or start of the steal attempt) depends some on the players steal rating. I usually hit up on the D pad for hit and runs and situations where i need full attention on the batter. Other times i will hit x or XandUp on the D pad on the pitchers first move. The cpu always notices your lead so if you want a full lead they may take a few pickoff attempts first. I feel like they improved the stealing alot from 2k3 and it feels like you earned a steal now.Comment
