I doubt Rose will get anywhere near a dugout. The most he could probabily become is a hitting instuctor or something like that.

I was listening to the radio this morning and they had a clip of Sparky Anderson and he said Rose should be in the HOF with provisions. He should only go to the hall if they can't produce evidence that he bet on baseball AS A PLAYER.
We all know the evidence comes from when he was a manager of the team but how bout earlier?
I think that might be the best thing to do. It wouldn't be a full reinstatement but rather give him the HOF induction and he could go to ballparks but never hold a position in the game again.

Did I go back and forth with you already? Anyway, there can be no provisions, exceptions, etc. Its all or nothing otherwise it ceases to be a deterrent.Comment

Yes but you're not putting Rose into the Hall as a manager. You would be putting him in as a player. As long as there's no evidence that he did this as a player then while he doesn't deserve to go to the Hall as far as morals and ethics are concerned he should go based on the accomplishments on the field.

The way things are is perfect.
Rose will never be forgotten, good or bad. His hitting prowess is discussed regularly, as is his ban from baseball for betting on the games as a manager.
Would Shoeless Joe be as remembered if he wasn't banned?Comment

Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated
Its impossible to do what you are saying. Lets say someone has a HOF career. They are looking forward to getting into the HOF. They become a manager and then bet on baseball (as with Pete Rose). By allowing him in as a player you allow him to circumvent the "no gambling" rule as a manager. At this point the whole rule is pointless. Thats why there can be no "half-pregnant" here. You cannot make a distinction as you are saying without making the rule more or less meaningless.Comment

Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated
The fact of the matter is that he broke to cardinal rule of baseball. Baseball doesn't care how good or bad of a person you are, but if you bet on baseball you're out. It's really a simple thing. Pete Rose knew what kind of a career he had. He knew that he was the all time hit leader and that he played a HOF career, but he threw it all out the window. Yes, the hall of fame is about your on field performance and no, it isn't a morality contest, but everyone knows that when you bet on baseball you throw your career away.Comment
