Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

a perspective from someone who used to play for Pete Rose:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=1701750

IMO, i'm not too crazy for reinstatement, but he definitely should be in the Hall. I think that's the general sentiment of most of the baseball community, but since people who have been banned from baseball for life can't be in the Hall, they're trying to figure out how to get him there wihtout changing the rules or changing the rules in an acceptable way.

Some of you are saying that Rose should be in the HoF for what he did on the field and that morality has no bearing.

You would do well to research your topic a little bit.

Integrity is actually specified as one of the criteria along which HoF candidates are judged.

And in my opinion, NO we cannot separate Rose the player from Rose the lying, manipulative, cheating manager.

I sure as hell would never play for someone who has admitted betting on games in which he managed.

If youre talkin about integrity......what about all the other guys admitted into the Hall who werent exactly "clean" guys. Ruth, Cobb, Mantle........etc?

Doesnt matter. The rule that gives a lifetime banishment is for GAMBLING. Therefore, if they didnt gamble on baseball then they dont get a lifetime ban. Those are the rules. You may not like them but rule 21 is there for a reason. Moreover, Pete Rose was aware of this rule his entire career.

I completely understand where you're coming from but in the sporting realm, betting on your sport is the most heinous crime in existence (should players be banned for life whilst drug cheats are given "counselling"? That's a matter for another thread).

Rose bet on baseball and lied about it for 14 years. It's not like he "hid" the truth. He told bald-faced lies. He looked his fans in the eye and plead his innocence.

I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Even after 14 years of lies, if Rose had apologised for his actions and shown true remorse, I would have been receptive to his reinstatement. However, the bullish way in which Rose has said he's "sorry it happened" and that "it's time to move on" show me that he is only sorry he got caught. He hurt baseball badly and doesn't seem to care. In my opinion, those sorts of people don't deserve the game's highest honour.
