Well, the Cubs' rotation is already very young and very good. It's probably the strongest part of their team.

If they tie up money in a contract for Maddux, that's money you won't be able to offer people like Prior, Wood, and Derek Lee for a long-term deal.

I mean, I'm sure the Cubs would love to have Maddux. They're just not desperate for him. And that's reflected in their offer.

The Cubs would love to have Maddux. I cant think of better pitcher to mentor a young staff than Maddux. He has an incredible knowledge of baseball, once he was able to predict a foul ball from the dug out like 2 pitches in advance or something.

I have a hunch he'll go to the Cubs tho I think it would be in his best interest to go to LA if he wants to pitch longer as Dodger Stadium is a pitcher's park.

Re: Maddux interested in 4 teams, but in no hurry to sign

Look at the Cubs situation like this: if they do sign Maddux and give him two years it's good insurance in case they can't sign Kerry Wood next winter, keeping the Cubs staff relativly solid with Maddux, Prior, Zambrano, Clement and Ryan Dempster, so signing Maddux does not necessarily hurt the Cubs, as for re-signing Derek Lee, the Cubs will be free of Moises Alou's contract after this season, which will free up money for Lee, if the Cubs want to re-sign Alou they can try to do it at lower rate, depending on of course, what kind of season he has this year.

As for the Maddux-Cardinals rumor, i think it's nothing more than that, rumor, the Cardinals cannot really afford to sign Maddux to a $14-15 Million dollar contract, not when they have to deal with Albert Pujols, Matt Morris and Edgar Renteria, i think the Cubs only competition is from the Dodgers, as many have said the Dodgers would be a logical choice because of the very pitcher friendly Ballpark, but if Maddux is the sentimental type, then the Cubs could be the team he signs with,
not many pitchers get the chance to get number 300 with the same team they got number 1.

I think the point is that they want to make sure they don't risk losing Kerry Wood. They want to be able to offer him whatever they need to. Otherwise, you're making the same mistake that you once made with a young Maddux (ironically).

I wouldn't mind seeing him in Baltimore. Too bad the O's seem to have dropped out. He'd be a good teacher for all of the young pitchers we have...
