Re: Torre Gets Extension

    Thank God!

Joe Torre is one of the nicest people in all of sports. He is a true Yankee along with Jeter, Bernie, Posada, and Mo.

I'd lock him up in a contract forever.

It's the fact that the Yankees just keep spending more and more money. It reminds me of a point that was made during the Yankee mock trial on ESPN the other night. When you play Monopoly, everyone starts with a equal amount of money. The Yankees payroll being WAY higher than say, the Expos or the Pirates does give them an big advantage. Yes, the Angels, Diamondbacks, and Marlins have beat the Yankees recently with smaller payrolls. But, before that, it was rare. With the Yankees signing ARod, Kevin Brown, Javier Vazquez, and reigning Torre, they will be a very tough team to beat this year. Steinbrenner has WAY more money than everyone else, so he buys what ever he wants, included their good manager. Not trying to start another Boston-Anti Yankee Fan vs. Yankee Fan War. Just throwing out my $0.02.

ps- the Yanks didnt sign A-Rod, they traded for him w/ Texas picking up most of the outrageous money they signed him for.. & Brown was traded for Weaver w/ LA p/u most of Brown's contract.. so the yanks didnt pay for those two guys (Jeter actually ends up making more this year from the Yanks than A-Rod does)..

                        Re: Torre Gets Extension

Torre's managerial record with the Mets, Braves & Cardinals: 894-1003.

Torre's managerial record with the Yankees: 786-506.

Interesting that before going to the Yankees, he was a sub-.500 manager. Since going to the Yankees, who just happened to have the highest payroll during that time, he's a genius.

I'm not saying he's not a good manager, he is. But a lot of managers could've done about as well with the talent the Yanks have had. Torre's also lucky that Steinbrenner began listening to his "baseball people" right around the time he arrived, signing good/great players rather than overpaying for bums as he had done in the '80's and early '90's.

is it just possible that Torre had some influence over that decision by Steinbrenner? i believe that to be the case, but its pure speculation obviously....as for Steinbrenner having more money than every other owner, not true...he just does the "right thing" by reinvesting that money into the on-field product, whereas many owners just want to pocket any profits they can find, all the while screaming poverty.....i am NOT a Yankee fan, but i certainly wouldnt mind having Steinbrenner as an owner either...2 more cents for the pile
