Torre's also lucky that Steinbrenner began listening to his "baseball people" right around the time he arrived, signing good/great players rather than overpaying for bums as he had done in the '80's and early '90's.

is it just possible that Torre had some influence over that decision by Steinbrenner? i believe that to be the case, but its pure speculation obviously....as for Steinbrenner having more money than every other owner, not true...he just does the "right thing" by reinvesting that money into the on-field product, whereas many owners just want to pocket any profits they can find, all the while screaming poverty.....i am NOT a Yankee fan, but i certainly wouldnt mind having Steinbrenner as an owner either...2 more cents for the pile

Well the Yankees were already pretty good when Torre got there (wild card in '95), so they had started making better decisions. Most of the credit usually goes to Steinbrenner's front office "baseball people", like Gene Michael. It seems that Steinbrenner has no problem acquiring guys that Torre dislikes, Ruben Sierra a couple years ago as an example. I don't think he was too happy about bringing back Jeff Nelson last year, either.
I don't mean to take anything away from Torre, as I said before I think he's a good manager. He did a pretty good job his 3 years in Atlanta. His stint in St Louis was disappointing though, and his years with the Mets were brutally bad.
I don't think managers have that much of an effect on their teams. It doesn't matter who the manager is, if you have bad players, you're going to lose. If you have good players your odds are a lot better, and Torre's had the best.
