Re: Is Beltran better than Vlad?

It depends on what you want really.

With Vlad: You are going to get 40 HRs, 100+ Runs, 120-130 RBI, .330 AVG, .400 OBP, .600 SLG, and anywhere from 20-30 SBs. Plus that cannon arm in RF.

With Beltran: You are getting 30 HRs, 100+ Runs, 100 RBIs, .280 AVG, .380 OBP, .550 SLG, and about 40 SBs. Plus the superior defense in CF.

You make the call. I think Vlad is more feared of a hitter, and you have to wonder if Beltran is playing so good because of a contract year. Both are great, great players.

The luxury tax is the biggest joke in baseball. Beltran's going to be sought after by any team with a huge bank account. Nobody actually fears the luxury tax in MLB.

Houston is gonna have a hard time with Scott Boras. Do they have the money to satisfy him. That is why I mentioned the Cubs, they have tons of money and Beltran has said he will consider them. He loves Wrigley as his numbers there show. Well see what happens.....

Re: Is Beltran better than Vlad?

Right now Vlad is still the best player in baseball with Pujols just behind him (Bonds doesn't count since he's in another dimension).

Carlos Beltran, however, possesses the ability to surpass both players. Beltran's biggest problem is consistantly hitting for average. He already has the mind boggling power and speed (just missed a 40-40 season), a strong arm (though no where close to Vlad) and excellent defensive skills with the ability to play every outfield position.

But, lets not forget that Vlad hits .330 consistantly. Smashes 40 homeruns (actually 39) with a "bad" back and has great speed that he unfortunately seems to be going the way of Canseco, Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez - you get the power and you forget about running.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Very good point. Should be interesting to see if he does as well if he ends up in a high pressure situation, like NY.

Re: Is Beltran better than Vlad?

well if the cubs can somehow get rid of sosa, will have a ton of money also because alou is a free agent. Garciaparra and clement are also free agents and if i'm not mistaken thats about 46 million dollars. Now they can use about 12 million to resign Aramis so they will have about 37 million left. Then resign clement and garciparra for about 8 and 12 which leaves you with 17 million for beltran, or they could go a bit cheaper with renteria and then sign Beltran and use any left over money for a reliever.
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

This is one of the best questions I've ever seen asked, player comparison-wise. I really wouldn't know how to answer this. These two are quickly becoming the best position players in the league not named Bonds. They both give their all, put up #'s, play great D, have cannons for arms, and are pretty damn feared.

Right now, I think I'd still take Vladimir, but ask me in an hour and it could be Beltran.

Vlad vs. Beltran ... it's a toss-up, but I think I'd rather have Vlad. They're both great players though, I'd love to have either one of them on my team.

As for where Beltran wil end up, I think he'll be in New York next season - but not pinstripes. The Mets missed out on A-Rod and they missed out on Vlad. I think they're going to do (pay) whatever it takes to make sure they don't miss out on Beltran.

I did hear that Beltran's idol was Bernie Williams, so that could play a factor. I just have a feeling he'll end up with the Mets, though.
