As for letting go of Posada, I'm all for it. I watch him play everyday, and trust me, he's not that good. He goes into very long slumps, isn't very good defensively (despite improving), strikes out way too much, and doesn't do much in the clutch.
It's being rumord that Kendall will replace him, which I wouldn't mind, since he's a good contact hitter, which is something the Yankees need with the 100+ strikeouts from A-Rod, Jeter, Matsui and Giambi.
Look at the stats. Posada is one of the best offensive catchers in the game. Who cares how many slumps he gets into. They are far less than the ones a majority of the catchers in the league go through. There is only one catcher better than Posada offensively in the AL - Ivan Rodriguez. And with Piazza slipping offensively more and more every year, Posada might even be the second best offensive catcher in baseball.
Defensively, yes, Posada isn't that great. He's actually terrible. If it weren't for Piazza, Posada would be the worst defensive catcher in the Northeast. However, as much as defense matters at catcher, the Yankees have a strong defensive prospect in Navarro and if Torre had any brain, he'd slide Navarro into the lineup late in the game."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Posada for Big Unit?
A few things:
First of all... Posada is Jeter's best friend on the team so I doubt it would be done without Jeter's input.
Second, I don't like Navarro as our catcher. There is a reason the D-Backs wouldnt accept him as part of a deadline Johnson deal. They say he's a fantastic defender... but a terrible hitter (hence his name "Pudgito" meaning Little Pudge).
Posada is one of my favorite Yankees... he was there through the dynasty years... and I feel this "team" is becoming less of a "Team" as we keep losing guys from those years.
Ask me to take Tino over a healthy Giambi right now.... and I'd say yes... I'd even take Paulie ofver Sheffield (well maybe not that far) but that "core" needs to stay together.
Posada leaving would also have an effect in our terrible SP as he's known as one of the best at calling games in the league.Thats what many dont realize... the catcher is doing more than blocking balls in the dirt and throwing out runners. They are usually calling the pitch (and just suggesting it for the more controlling SP) and what they call has a huge effect on the pitchers.
I don't like this deal unless its for Hudson. I'd rather have Posada for another 4-6 years than Johnson for 1-2 but thats just me.

Because of his ability to call games the Yankees would be crazy to get rid of Posada despite the slight decline in his offense.Comment
