Ah, OK. I read something similar on another message board, too. Apparently those radio reports out of St. Louis were either premature, or just flat wrong.

I really hope this turns out to be totally bogus. Unless altered significantly, that deal just stinks for the Braves.

If that trade is going down, I want Ankiel and a decent prospect from Oakland. Atlanta gets hosed in that deal.

I don't think the deal is that bad for Atlanta. Think about it, Hudson is a free agent after the '05 season. What are the chances Atlanta could even resign him if they dealt Giles for him straight-up? My guess would be slim to none the way the Braves are running their organization right now. I think Haren is a nice young pitcher they could make even better in Atlanta. Suppan makes little sense going to Atlanta, going to Oakland makes a little more sense since they need another starter if they trade Hudson. However, I do think Atlanta should get another good player/prospect in addition to Haran for Giles. Perhaps the same could be said for Oakland as well, they are giving up the 4th best pitcher in the game (in terms of winning percentage).

Re: KFNS reporting Hudson dealt to...

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (registration required) has some more Hudson/Giles stuff: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sp.../10franco.html

Anaheim -- The Braves want so badly to add a legitimate ace to their starting rotation, they're considering a trade that could send second baseman Marcus Giles and a left-handed pitching prospect to the Oakland Athletics for Tim Hudson.

Sources close to the situation said the teams have had several discussions and that general managers John Schuerholz and Oakland's Billy Beane would meet Thursday night at the Anaheim Marriott, where baseball's winter meetings officially begin this morning.
The competition for Hudson is likely to be more heated, with Baltimore, Los Angeles, St. Louis and possibly Cleveland in the mix. The Athletics asked the Braves for Giles and lefty prospect Dan Meyer, 23, who's ready to compete for a spot in Atlanta's major league rotation.

"[Giles] has made himself into a great player," Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said. "I think he'll be able to do some special things in his career, and you hope it's with us and not someone else. You hope there's a way we could acquire somebody like Tim Hudson and be able to keep a Marcus Giles.

"Unfortunately, you've usually got to give up something to get something in return."

It's uncertain if the Braves would give up that much for Hudson, 29, unless they are sure they could sign him to a contract extension. He gets $6.75 million in 2005 and can be a free agent next winter, likely commanding a deal worth $12 million or more per season.

He certainly fits the No. 1 starter bill, with a 92-39 record and 3.30 ERA in six major league seasons. The two-time All-Star is Oakland's career leader with a .702 winning percentage.

Hudson had four straight years with at least 15 wins, 200 innings and 152 strikeouts, before finishing 12-6 with a 3.53 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 188 2/3 innings in 2004.

A Columbus native and former Auburn standout, he's said he'd like to pitch for Atlanta.

The Braves crave a marquee starter, after parting ways with free agent 15-game winners Jaret Wright and Russ Ortiz on Tuesday. Wright agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Yankees and Ortiz wasn't offered arbitration by the Braves. If Schuerholz can avoid moving John Smoltz from closer to starter, some in the organization think he will. Schuerholz said a Smoltz decision would be made after the winter meetings.

The A's don't believe they can afford to keep together their three aces -- Hudson, Barry Zito, Mark Mulder -- beyond 2005. Oakland increased trade discussions for Hudson after he issued a March 1 deadline for a contract extension, which wasn't received well by A's officials.

The Braves aren't eager to part with Giles, 27, a 2003 All-Star with a good glove, a line-drive swing that yields loads of doubles, and power to hit 20 to 25 homers.

Eligible for arbitration for the first time, Giles could make $2 million or more in 2005.

I say Hudson and a long-term deal or nothing. Haren isn't going to help this club. We have plenty of young arms if Schuerholz wants to go that way. You don't give up a stud like Giles for nothing.

The Braves have lost JD Drew, why in the HELL would they give up Marcus Giles for sub par players. Their offense is gonna be in BIG trouble regardless of what happens. why give up one of ur best players for nothing? Giles is a stud and if traded, the braves must get a stud in return (Hudson).

Giles is young and hes really cheap. Its not if he has a big contract that needs to be moved. That has to be a bogus rumor. If Shureholz did that move he should be fired.

Jeez. If that is true, I'll be incredibly upset. I dont know whether I want to trade Giles for Hudson. We need a great pitcher but who knows what's gonna happen to our offense if Giles is gone? He and Furcal are the catalysts at 1 and 2 in the order. Chipper is getting older and Andruw is striking out more than ever. I just hope Schuerholz doesnt do this, and rather finds ANY way to get Hudson without giving up Giles.

Well if you believe Peter Gammons, he says that the Braves are unwilling to trade Giles and are therefore out of the running for Hudson. He also mentioned that the Dodgers are making a run at Hudson, and may part with Edwin Jackson.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported today that Kevin Millwood would like to return to Atlanta. If Kevin could be had for somewhere around $5-6 mil, that'd be fine with me. I'd prefer going that route, rather than trading Giles for Hudson and creating a giant hole in our lineup.

I think getting back with Leo Mazzone would be just what Kevin needs.
