Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
I'm impressed by the job Coach Drew is doing at Baylor, but one wonders if he's doing things the right way (I find it hard to believe I'm the only one who has thought this on this board). It seems like they've come out of nowhere and are all of a sudden a major player on the recruiting front. I know they've had a couple of decent years back-to-back....just kind of surprising they went from the shooting incident a couple of years ago to now.
If Drew's doing things the right way, kudos to him....I just hope there's nothing shady going on down in Waco (trust me, I'm a UK fan, I know all about shady characters ruining a program)."He who controlleths the backboard, controlleths the game." - Adolph RuppComment

Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
I hear Henry has VERY strong ties to Kansas, however his brother is heading to Memphis so that could factor in. I think he would be a better fit in Kansas's offense ala Brandon Rush.
My predicts
Stephenson - USC(He's down to KU, UCLA, USC. But think OJ Mayo ball hog style when it comes this kid)
Sidney - UCLA (I don't think Howland is gonna let this guy get out of his backyard)
Henry - Kansas (His brother is enrolling at Memphis but he'll fit Kansas's system better)
Wall - Baylor (Hiring his AAU coach gives a slight, slight edge to Baylor)
Favors - Georgia Tech (Another player that could stay home, he'll get massive minutes right away with solid competition)
Cheek - Villanova (They're recruiting him the hardest, his last official visit to date)
Snaer - MissouriComment

Having the last visit isn't always a good indicator of where the guy will sign. Duke was Boynton's last scheduled visit and he didn't even make it that far.Cheek - Villanova (They're recruiting him the hardest, his last official visit to date)Comment

He meant Nova is the last place he's physically visited, not that Nova is his last scheduled visit. He's already been there.Comment

Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
Yeah I meant that. I know that having the last visit doesn't always benefit you. Take K. Love as an example. When UNC was recruiting him in a battle against UCLA, we had the last visit but he commited to UCLA the following Monday. Then again, K. Love was UCLA's to lose from the get go.Comment

Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
Yeah, that's always been a concern. Hasn't he bounced around two or three different prep schools?
Also, looks like Sidney is going up to UVA this weekend, for an unofficial visit.Comment

Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
I had a chance to watch Kilicli and MSA play Oak Hill Academy last night. The game was close until Oak Hill Academy pulled away late in the 3rd and won by 20 points. MSA lost their starting SG, Jabs Newby, 1 minute into the game with an ankle injury and he didn't return. After watching them scrimmage few times this season and talking to their head coach, Jabs is probably the most athletic kid on their team so it certainly was a huge loss.October 15, 2008
MSA's Kilicli commits to WVU

West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has landed yet another commitment from a high-profile recruit.
On Tuesday, Mountain State Academy (MSA) coach Rob Fulford confirmed reports that power forward Deniz Kilicli has decided to play for the Mountaineers beginning in 2009.
I could definitely see a lot of potential in Kilicli but he is very raw. He has only been in the US for about 3 or 4 months now and has not adjusted to the American game yet. You could also tell that he wasn't used to playing in front of big crowds (probably about 6,500 or so there last night) because he started the game very nervous, missing a dunk and turning the ball over 4 times in the 1st quarter. He finished the game with 10 points and 2 rebounds.
From what I've seen, he definitely needs to get a lot tougher and more aggressive on defense. He has some very nice footwork in the low post and finishes very well with his left hand, but will need some time to develop. I know it's very early in his senior season and I've only seen him play 4 or 5 times, counting scrimmages and practices, but I think that a possible redshirt next season at WVU would do him a lot of good.
Oak Hill Academy was impressive as usual. Doron Lamb and Bryan Allen both had 21 points each. If I'm not mistaken, Lamb is a Junior and has potential to be a 5-star recruit next season. Mo Mo Jones is a very nice looking PG and handles the ball really well. The only bad thing I saw about him is that he seems to be very cocky. I saw him commit a couple of hard fouls on break away layups and then taunt the MSA crowd afterwards and also looked to be having words with the referee a couple of times. Rivals 4-star 6'9" Center Tiny Gallon finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He's a definite force inside but probably needs to drop about 20 or 30 lbs (he looked to weigh at least 300 lbs) to be a solid contributor to any major Division I schools. He was dragging throughout the game.
On a side note WVU commit and 6'2" PG Junior Noah Cottril, who transferred to MSA this season from Poca high in WV, had a very good game. He was 7-13 from beyond the arc, while scoring 27 points. He also had 6 rebounds and 5 assists. He's listed at 6'2" but he's closer to 5'10" in my opinion. He still has a lot of ball left to play before he officially becomes a Mountaineer but he has a very nice stroke and handles the ball decent. I'm not exactly sure how he fits into the Big East though. I really don't see him as a #1 or #2 in that conference so it will be interesting to see how much more he develops over this season and next at MSA.Last edited by crques; 11-12-2008, 11:18 AM.Comment

Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
You're not the only one who has thought that. I have had those thoughts too. But with the troubles the program got into before Drew came, I doubt they would try anything like that.(although I think every program bends the rules at least a little) I am sure the NCAA is keeping a close eye on them.Dave Bliss was bringing talent into Waco before all the troubles too. Sure after the problems, you would think why would anyone want to come to Baylor? If you ever met Drew, you would know that he could sell anything (plus wasn't he bringing in talent at Valpo as well and one like recruiter of the year?) . Baylor is now on the rise and players won't to be a part of that. It's not like they're landing McDonald's All American's left and right, they are getting great players in but still falling a bit short when it comes to "blue chip" guys.I'm impressed by the job Coach Drew is doing at Baylor, but one wonders if he's doing things the right way (I find it hard to believe I'm the only one who has thought this on this board). I know it's a bit different, but Kim Mulkey did the same with the women's program as well. (she should have the #1 class in Women's College Basketball if everyone that has giving a verbal, commits)
Side note - if John Wall commits to Baylor and Britney Griner keeps her verbal and commits to the women's team, when was the last time a school could say they have signed the #1 recruit in both men's and women's in the same year?Comment

Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion
Really? I thought I read that he was losing weight and getting in shape. Maybe that was all talk. Regardless, it looks like Gallon is down to Oklahoma and Mississippi State. But Gallon has been all over the place at times, so who knows if that holds up. His teammate is committed to OU, right?Rivals 4-star 6'9" Center Tiny Gallon finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
