Re: The Official 2011 "Running Commentary of Every Single Tourney Game" Thread
To say it was ALL UConn's defense or ALL bad shooting by Butler is incorrect both ways. UConn played great defense, and had a lot of blocks on the interior, but even when Butler had open jumpers or shots at point blank range on the inside (Andrew Smith, cough cough) they missed them.Ryan Spencer

Yeah, I agree spencer. Uconn played the best defense I've seen them play all year and completely shut down Mack and Howard (Howard especially looked absolutely overmatched out there. This game kills his NBA hopes imo as he showed he can not hang with bigger/stronger players), which is something I haven't seen any other team do to that point. Combine that with their ability to control the boards, and they really did dominate. That said, no teams defense, no matter how good they are, is 18% shooting percentage good. That just doesn't happen lol
Realistically, there were a half a dozen bunnies that Butler missed. But even if they hit all those, and then a few extra shots, I think at best they were still looking at a very low 30% shooting percentage with the way Uconn played. And Uconn didn't exactly light it up either, and there were a number of shots they usually hit that they didn't (as well as a number of easy shots they passed up in the last 5+ minutes early in the shot clock).
Anyone who says that Butler shot 18% only because of Uconns defense is crazy. That number is almost unfathomable. But to say that it was complete ineptitude on Butlers part would also be incorrect imoComment

Butler had plenty of good looks in terms of long range jumpers, they didn't hit them and that was a big part.
However UConn was absolutely incredible defending the paint, Butler didn't get more than 4 or 5 easy looks inside all game and of those I think they only made 1.
UConns post defense + Butlers bad outside shooting = what we saw last night.
UConn deserves all the credit in the world for their interior defense, they put on a clinic.Favorite Teams:

Yea, and even some of the easy looks inside, probably had a lot to do with them rushing the shots because uconn's defense was in their mind. UConn played incredible defense, and Butler missed a bunch of open shots down the stretch as well.

Yes Butler shot bad (28% on uncontested shots). But most of those were deep shots when they were already rattled. They had only 5 uncontested close shots all game.
If they hit those bunnies they missed, plus a few more, it would have been a better measurement of Butlers true skill, but they still would have only shot in the low 30% range on the game because Uconns defense was that good.Last edited by Redemption; 04-22-2011, 02:54 PM.Comment
