Re: Im STILL a bit worried about Inside Drive this year...

I updated the rosters for the Spurs and Nets, and I'm having a blast just pitting those two teams against each other. The defense is tough. The games are very competitive, especially when I put myself at a disadvantage (which translates to manually creating a tougher mode than All-star). I just lowered my 2-point slider by 2, 3-point slider by 1, and hookshots by 2. Other than that, everything was the same.

Yep I did the same think kind of I created all the first roudn rookies and made some trades and FA signings in July and had a blast with it. So in the gameplay department I except it to be just as good if not better, which is fine with me since it sported the best gameplay in any b-ball sim to date imo.

I do wish it had a better atmosphere and a more in depth franchise but I can deal with it. I think it would be pretty cool if they licensed TNT and used it to make a better broadcast while playing in the atmosphere department that is!

I know it will most likely have the solid gameplay that it had from last year's version but I may be in the minority in saying this but I wasnt as blown away by ID last year in comparison to NBA 2K3. Sure it did do a few things better than 2K3 like differentiate between teams better and run their style of play...plus it also had a slightly better rebounding system but the lack of atmosphere was a huge impact on the overall immersion of the game. Also there was something about the animations last year that were very annoying and I STILL see them in Steve's ID 2004 movies posted. Its hard to describe but there seems a certain lack of flow to some of them like the back down and the directional movement of players. It seems very stiff and they sort of turn backwards like they are standing on sun dials rather than actually transistioning fluidly into different movements. Also last year when players would bump and grind into each other, there was no real fealing of contact , especially down low....it sort of felt like a simplified back down animation rather than fighting for position. Also the sensation of catching nothing but net wasnt very well implemented. Draining shots from the outside always resulted in the same net animation that looked more like an unstarched stiff shirt sleave rather than a tight net snapping piece of nylon. All these little things add up to really remove the player from getting completely absorbed in a mind blowing game of Xbox B-Ball.

I dont want to knock this game but I just wasnt as excited about last year's game as alot of others and I guess I am still a bit worried about this year's game as well.....But I wish I didnt have to worry about these things cause the game really could be great.

Lisa, you are spot on with all of your complaints and I agree completely. This is why I was hoping that ESPN Basketball would have more of the gameplay elements that ID has so that it could've been the complete package this year. Unfortuatly it didn't and over a longer period of time I can get used to the below average animations and atmosphere however I can never get used to lackluster A.I. Hopefully the developers feel that they have the gameplay smoothed out enough this year so that next year they can concentrate on animations and atmosphere. A.I. is the hard part and ID has that. Now they just have to get some of the other basics corrected to have the most complete game out there.

Lisa, this is a very nice post. I definitely understand what you're saying. Little things can add up to a lot. I agree with most of your complaints. I think that little "something" you refer to is actually 2 things, at least to me it is 2 things. The first is obviously atmosphere. Hearing the crowd react to what is happening on the court is huge in terms of the whole experience, the same is true for commentary, especially at intense and crucial moments during the game. Lets say you hit a 3 pointer at home to take the lead by 1 with 3 seconds to go, the crowd and the anouncers should be going crazy. I don't care if the gameplay sucks, if that above situation occurs, you are gonna be pumped and forget about how good the gameplay is, it's just gonna be like "I love this game".

I think the second thing is control. Without question ID 2003 was the worst game of the major 3 titles in terms of control. In ID 2003 at many points in the game you were "locked" into animations, such as not being able to pass oout of lay-up/dunk animations, or limited dribble move animations. NBA 2k3 had mid air shot adjustment, Live had free style, what did ID have? How can you get excited and "into " a game when you don't feel like you have complete control over your players (at least the one with the ball). It's hard to have an intense game when you are sitting there watching most of the game happen instead of controling what happens. For example in ID 2003 if you went up for a dunk or lay-up once you left the ground you had no control over what was going to happen, you just had to sit and watch if you got blocked or not. Whereas in NBA 2k3 you had mid air shot adjustment, which wasn't alll that great but gave you more of a sense of playing the game as opposed to watching it.

That being said I loved ID 2003 and thought it was by far the best B-ball game last year, and think it will be this year. I'm buying it for sure. But the real point of my post is, does more control (ESPN and Live) equate to more UNrealistic gameplay? Because it seems ID is the most realistic, but lacks control, does the lack of control add to the realism?

I guess this is a good discussion. It probablly boils down to what is actually most important to each individual player. I used to be such a 'stickler' for stats....if stats werent extremely authentic down to a T, it would ruin my experience. Now recently over the years, I have sort of took a turn to actual gameplay fun. There's that certain rewarding feel that sucks you into a Nintendo style console game. Its that exaggerated flow and rythme that sucks you in to its control and reminds you that playing a video game should be first and formost...FUN.

I guess thats I look for first now when playing a sports game....even above down to the detail stat replication. I think sport game companies spend too much time trying to replicate every detail of the sport, management, politically correct gear and facial expressions, that they sometimes leave little time left over to actually observe how their game feels and flows in the players controller hand.

There was this one stupid little mini game in Mario Party 4 or so that had Mario and his gang of characters doing basketball free throws into a group of basketball hoops hung from the wall and I couldnt begin to tell you how satisfying this felt and played. It was such a fun experience timing your jump and watching the player release the basketball at the apex and the graphics were cartoony YET very detailed with lots of realistic ball physics off the rim and net snapping action that just made this simple little mini game a delightful treat!....imagine what this sort of amazing design and attention to detail could be done with a full scale basketball game??
