SAR and Nets have worked things out. It will all be official tomorrow
August 8, 2005 -- <!--start bodytext-->The roller-coaster courtship between Shareef Abdur-Rahim and the Nets seems to be headed toward a happy ending, and both sides can only hope the marriage is more stable than the dating process.
Spurred on by yesterday's exclusive story in The Post in which Abdur-Rahim — upset by the Nets' handling of medical concerns that arose in his physical — said he no longer wanted to join the franchise, the team is expected to announce today it is going through with the deal.
Abdur-Rahim, 28, who was courted heavily by the Nets, was disillusioned by the team's last-second decision to seek additional medical opinions about scar tissue in his right knee.
When his feelings were published in yesterday's Post, Nets star Jason Kidd, coach Lawrence Frank and Thorn called Abdur-Rahim to rebuild the relationship, sources told The Post.
"Shareef is a good guy, and No. 1, he's a professional," said Thorn. "I understand there's some anxiety and trepidation when the possibility of not ending up with the team you chose arises. We feel we have all the information we need to make a decision within the next day or two."
The Nets have reason to be cautious since they are investing six years and $38 million in the deal. They sent copies of his MRI to three leading orthopedic surgeons and now must decide if they want to complete a sign-and-trade deal with the Trail Blazers.
In addition to sending Portland a protected No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft, the Nets are shipping their $4.9 million trade exception to the Trail Blazers. They lose that exception at midnight tomorrow, so time is of the essence.
"The real reason for me coming to New Jersey is I feel like we have a real good chance to compete for a championship," Abdur-Rahim said last night by telephone. "I don't think that's changed. I just wish things had been handled better, with me in mind. "But it is what it is. I know I have a lot of basketball left in me. I thought that's one of the reasons the Nets came after me as hard as they did. I don't want them making a decision they're not comfortable with. I'm a grown man; if this goes through, I signed a contract and will work hard to earn it."Comment

I wont believe anything until I see him holding up his jersey at the press conference, but everything looks like it'll fall into place......thank God.Comment

Re: SAR doesnt want to play for NJ anymore
He hasn't even gotten here yet and they have to breastfeed this grown man like this?
What happens when he gets pulled from a game in the 4th?
Not a good sign at all. The local media will eat him alive.
Sounds like an emotional wreck. Oliver McCall in a basketball jersey.

And you have been doing that similar job for say 9 years or so. Isn't that kind of an insult to you? Maybe to your intelligeince and experienced and especially your skills and talents? Let's put aside the millions, just a regular paycheck an average individual recieved. Don't you think that what happen will certainly affect the way you look at the company? Tell me why would you wanna put up with the way that certain company treated you where there are certainly better places out there that will respect what you can offer? Pardon me, I am not trying to be an arse to you or anything. Just giving you an idea that you might need to consider before you start calling other people perrenial lossers.
I am in no way a fan of Rahim, but I do love to see him in SA.
Problem with this is that the need for having this job.... if I really need this job if they are still hiring me I am just thankful and appreciate it. I may be a asset to this company and I may have other options but bottom line I think folks just dont appreciate thier situations. It could always be worse.Comment

wait didn't he fail a physical and that's why NJ put it on hold? If that's the case, than Shareef should go get in shape and fix up his body.Comment

Where in your analogy do you factor in a potentially problematic issue that could severely impact his ability to peform the job over the length of the contract?Originally posted by SarahPut it this way, I don't know if you are working person or not. I don't see how 'not knowing whether you can do a job that you've been doing it for a long time' is comparable to an issue that could prohibit you from doing the job.
Not a SAR or Net fan, just curious.Comment

The analogy came from the idea that you are not getting stronger as years goes on. If the company you are working currently suddenly decides to produce another kind of products and you don't want to be a part of it, you are out of the job. An older age and the factors that goes along with it.Originally posted by tenthWhere in your analogy do you factor in a potentially problematic issue that could severely impact his ability to peform the job over the length of the contract?

Shariff's previous injury might have been overlook in the past because he was very young and strong, now NJ has issues with it now because he will be staying in the team for 6 years and they are wondering if that previous injury will factor as he gets older. His muscle tissue will not be as strong as it used to be. NJ with thier core will be utilizing speed or fastbreak, and NJ is worried if Shariff could keep up in the 6 years he will be staying. Shariff as he gets older will loss his speed but he will be a more fundamental player where he can utilize his experience. He can still do the job, but his methods of doing it will change. Just like in the job market out there, as we get older our methods of dealing with stuff change, unless you are working in an office environment and all you do is sit. When your methods changes, you might encounter some troubles because your boss doesn't like your methods, and so will Rahim when he will start adopting the slow paced game which doesn't goes with NJ's gameplan. NJ was effective with Martin because he can run like a deer, but Shariff may only be able to do that in a short time. But that doesn't mean he can't play PF.
Just like in the job market, as you get older (unfortunately athletes body deteriorates faster than the average person in the job market) you will loss your speed at work especially if you are working in heavy stuff or working in a fast paced environment. You can only rely on your experience to make things easier for you. That doesn't mean you can't get the job done, you will just have a different method of doing it.
If NJ doubt what Shariff can offer, I beleive SA is a better organization than NJ. His skills will be used more efficiently because SA is a slow paced team and relies more on fundamental than speed. SA will apprecite what Rahim can offer to them but they can't give him the amount of money NJ is offering. What SA can offer is that they are a more stable and consistent team than NJ at least currently. Just like outside there are better companies out there that may be able to utilize your skills and experience, its just a matter of whether or not you will fit with that company's system. Just like companies, each NBA team has there own system, it's just a matter if whether you will fit in or not.
Shariff is no Kenyon, but that doesn't mean he can't play PF. Shariff's speed will deteriorate soon as he get's older especially factoring the previous injuries he attained, but that doesn't mean he can't play the PF position. NJ will just miss his speed.
I don't know if my explanation is clear enough for you, because I don't want to explain it further.
It is already offtopic.

You don't fail physicals by not being in shape.Originally posted by bball_1523wait didn't he fail a physical and that's why NJ put it on hold? Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

That said, if a player I was signing had a question mark in a previous injury, I'd be looking further into the issue whether I was San Antonio or Phoenix. Especially when you're offering a long-term deal like this. It's ignoring these types of things that can cripple a contending team.Comment

or they can be like McDyess for the Pistons and end up pretty well...but you do have to evaluate the seriousness of an injury to see if it's still worth itOriginally posted by tenthSorry, still dont' see how that comparison works.
