I would agree that it's entertaining, but they need to play some D. Both teams. They run and shoot way too much. Sometimes, I would just like to see one team stop the other.

it isnt football. Basketball is supposed to be a run and gun sport.

I get so freakin tired of hearing the same freakin defense cliche. You can play a drinking game when you watch TNT, ESPN, ABC etc... Every time they mention how important defense is you have to take a drink. I believe you would probably go through 3 damn cases.

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

While I'll agree that bball is a run and gun sport, and it isn't like football, you still need to play both ends of the court. How half assed is that? If you only play on one side like the Mavs do? And while it is entertaining, they aren't going to get far trying to score more than the other team.

If the other team is playing solid D, like the Spurs do, how do the Mavs outscore them, if they can't score at all? And they can't stop the Spurs on the other end, then . . . well, you get the point.

And it's only a cliche cause it's true. Defense does win championships.

the Mavs are 3-1 against the Spurs this year. Last regular season they were 2-2 - and they gave em hell in the playoff series. In fact, it has been said that the referees basically handed the Spurs games two and three

The Spurs havent dominated the Mavs by any means. They sure havent figured out how to stop Dallas on offense. SA had to score 90-100 points in the playoffs and regular season in order to beat the Mavs.

it's not their "defense" that beats Dallas. Dont get me wrong, SA is better than Dallas but they dont "own" Dallas by any means.

That would be your Lakers that own Dallas. Hopefully, Dallas wont have to play LA in the first round. They arent scared of SA, Sacramento, or Minnesota, but i believe that they are somewhat worried about facing Shaq and the Lakers.

That "defense wins championships" cliche is not always true in basketball as it is in football, baseball, hockey and soccer. Remember the 80s Lakers, and Celtics. Hell, even the Detroit and Chicago championship teams scored over 100 most of the time.

Defense IS important in basketball. I just get tired of hearing defense mentioned on NBA broadcasts so much. Its mentioned more than its mentioned in a freakin football broadcast. When is the last time you saw a shutout in basketball.

I think it has become the "hip" thing to say, and people think it makes them seem basketball smart when they mention how important defense is.

Granted, the Mavs have held their own against teams like the Spurs that play good defense during the regular season, the playoffs are a totally different animal. The Mavs have to play a team in a 7 game series where transition is harder to do, and most points are earned in half-court sets. The games are usually grinded out and slowed down. Defense is then a priority.

I'm not just saying this to make myself seem "basketball smart." I truely believe that the Mavs need to play D in order to get far.

But I do admire how Steve Nash approched it. He said he knew, as well as the rest of the team, that they don't play the best D in the league, so they should stick to what they do best. Run and try to outscore you. They play to their strengths and try to mask their weaknesses. They have been playing good small ball lately, and maybe that might work in the playoffs.

That being said, I think the only team that they truely do fear is the Lakers. Everyone else, they have a better chance against.

Yes, the Lakers, Celtics, Pistons and Bulls all scored over 100 points a game, but that was in a different era in basketball. But not only could those teams score, but they could play defense. In fact, Detroit's Bad Boys were known for their defense, and Chicago won six titles because of their defense. The Lakers had Michael Cooper and Kareem, while the Celtics had McHale, Parrish and Bird, all of whom were very good or even great defenders. Those teams were not one dimensional by any stretch of the imagination. They did not try to bury teams on the offensive end as the Mavs try to do.

Your Mavs will finish in 5th out West which means they get the Spurs in the first round. No way, and I mean no way do they take the Spurs on the road.

Im not saying that the Mavs are even CLOSE to being a championship caliber team (they are far from it) I was just stating my opinion that network "personalities" talk about defense way too much like it's the NFL or NHL.

The Lakers, Spurs, Rockets, and Bulls won the championship with Shaq/Kobe, Duncan, Olajawon, and Jordan/Pippen. The league is about superstars, and not about grind it out slow paced "defensive" games.

by the way, i dont claim to know crap about the sport - but ive been watching it my entire life and played the sport from age 10 until my freshman year in college. That has nothing to do with anything, though.

I was just saying that defense is being talked about more in NBA telecasts than it does in NFL telecasts and the league is going to become really boring if they go the "slow paced/low scoring/defensive" rout. Last year's NBA finals was the lowest rated series ever, because they were two great "defensive teams"

The Dallas Mavericks are far from being a championship caliber team and it's not just because of their defense. Their offense has been lacking this year as well. Actually, their defense has been better than their offense on many occassions this year.

Last year, their defense was way underrated and this year their offense is way overrated.

the Mavs are 3-1 against the Spurs this year.

Actually last year people were upset because the Lakers got put out, and TD isn't a flashy kinda superstar. NJ doesn't have good defense, although SA does.I would've been more content seeing SA and Indiana than NJ again.

The L has suffered in almost all the fundamental areas. You now have players lying about why the scores are low (because of the defenses) yeah RRRRIIIIIIGGGHHHTTTT. Players can't shoot, and too many lack basic fundamentals. The guy who has them packed down TD is looked at as boring for playing the game the right way, and gets hated on for winning the MVP. It's unbelieveable.
