Tovarich: Luckily they struggled on offense just as much as we did. That was frustrating trying to watch the finishing in the paint. We rebounded well for all of 5 minutes or so before it went to its usual level of pitiful.

Reporter: How have they gone from pre-season 12 to 5-4?

Tovarich: I was expecting to see a UNLV-esque list of injuries and they just don't have them. It seems to be a roster composition issue. Usually I'm here bewildered by why everyone hates having a center on their roster and how we tower over them, but this is the opposite problem. They only have 3 guards on the roster, and two of them don't play, and the one that does is a FR. He played almost the entire game, but even then, they are moving people around constantly, and one of the 3 SF's they start are often handling the ball, so they were very turnover prone because of that.

Reporter: Why do your big men play so small on the boards?

Tovarich: If I knew the answer to that, I'd be carrying a national championship trophy around with me by now.

Reporter: What has caused Pippen to go missing on offense?

Tovarich: Yeah, he's covered pretty tightly because of his 3-point shooting ability. I think it's been 6 games now where he hasn't score more than 5 and twice he didn't score at all. We haven't had many attempts for him though. We're trying to get it to the big guys. We've struggled from 3 enough this year that even I won't stubbornly keep firing them. We'll surely need to take more the next game.

Reporter: How big is the Duke game?

Tovarich: We were disappointed by UNLV and Florida State killing our SOS, and despite beating #2 Louisville, their center got injured early and they were a very different team then, so this is by far the toughest opponent we've seen so far. We'll learn a lot about how we stack up against the teams you need to beat to go deep in March.

Tovarich: Some games are hard to explain. The wild runs by both teams, whether due to ineptitude or greatness, were seemingly constant. Rarely did it ever feel like we just traded baskets or stops for a couple possessions.

Reporter: The start was pretty rough. What did you change?

Tovarich: Yeah, just in case the Cameron Crazies and a 10-0 top 4 team on the road wasn't hard enough, we decided to turn the ball over 2 of our first 3 possessions, started 1/5 in the paint against Loren Woods and let them throw 4 alley-hoops over our head and get down 15-5. I had to do a Roy Williams and take off my jacket and sub in the bench and yell at them for a minute. We looked like we'd never played a road game before and we play around 2/3's of our games on the road or neutral court probably. We looked flustered, and we never do that. So then I sent everyone back out, except Riley. I'd already seen enough of him.

Reporter: So what prompted the run after that?

Tovarich: Yeah, we got it back to 22-22. We put the press on. I should have done that right away, like they were doing to us, because everyone loves to do that to us apparently. They got flustered there for a bit too with that. We kinda gave up on the paint and started taking some 3's and were pretty solid from there. That gave us a lead into halftime.

Reporter: What about the 2nd half start?

Tovarich: LOL. I don't know what happened at halftime. We missed our first 10 3's. We started 3/18. They came out 12/14. The interior defense they played was amazing. That lone C on their roster should have been credited with at least 10 blocks, not 4. Their walkon PF, the only one on their roster got 8 boards in 14 minutes, which probably isn't in our top 100 most embarrassing rebounding statistics, but still bad. Their army of SF's who play every position destroyed us. We usually can score, but we played like they towered over us instead of the way it truly was.

        Reporter: So then what changed?

Tovarich: We tried to change up some strategy a little. We doubled that PG Dawn they had, who was destroying us whether he was playing PG or SG, because they had no SG's, not who actually play anyway. We tried to get tighter on some of these guys bombing 3's on us. They should have shot more of those. They were killing us. But they let these SF's run around with the ball too much and try to let their PG's play without the ball and it was a turnover-fest. They beat us in the paint scoring, which is inexplicable. That roster is designed to jump shoot us to death or alley-hoop us to death when we turn the ball over. Ultimately, I don't know what changed other than we starting hitting shots and they went cold, so we finished on a 32-11 run over the last 6ish minutes. It was a lot of runs by both teams like that and we finished on one and they didn't. That might be all that happened. I had some flashbacks to Fresno State when we went on a run and inexplicably came back to tie the game, only for them to call a timeout and destroy us, and this time we tied it up and they called the timeout and it was more of the same after. They just couldn't hit much the last 6 minutes.

Reporter: You're making some lineup changes in game sometimes. Any thoughts to changing any starters?

Tovarich: I don't think so. We usually have enough options to see who is on and who is off that night. Pippen's been non-existent, but we got him going some tonight. Crandle's the most consistent 3-point shooter even though it should be Pippen. He had a great first half with 19 before he cooled off. Riley rebounded well, but couldn't score to save his life and got pushed around by SF's. Fleming was rought scoring too. Grady was soft in the 2nd half after being 3/4 at halftime. Len Bullicer has hit some shots lately, but not tonight.

Reporter: What about Freeman? He only played 2 minutes.

Tovarich: I have a feeling he's another Dillard. He's supposed to be good, supposed to be a decent 3-point shooter and he's 2/19 this season. It may just be he's not really a fit for us. He can maybe try to work it out against some of our upcoming opponents who shouldn't hopefully be giving us too much trouble.

Reporter: Even though Louisville was ranked higher, does this win feel bigger?

Tovarich: I don't know what to make of it. Louisville was 2 but their C left injured and they were never the same. This is such a bizarre roster. 1 C, 1 PF who is a walkon, 2 SG's who don't play, 2 PG's and EIGHT SF's. We found a way but I'm not sure what to make of a game against such an ill-conceived roster. We beat the eventual national champions last year, so even though they were 19 at the time of the game, they may be our best accomplishment. Beating Duke is always fun though, even if K retired and Lebron's HS coach took over.

You had some new players step up this game. Crandle, Pippen, and Harbaugh with bigger roles than usual. Glad you got the win.

Tovarich: Another not particularly inspiring performance.

            Reporter: You won easily coach?

Tovarich: Against Vermont? I should hope so. It was ugly.

            Reporter: What didn't you like?

Tovarich: We almost ruined our streak of making a 3 in every game. There were a little under 3 to go before Len Bullicer finally hit one. I think they hit their last 5 3's there toward the end. We didn't finish well. I'd like to get the backups more minutes, but they never really do much. I'd love for Freeman or Barber to shoot well just once. I think they're 3/32 on 3's this year. +1 in rebounding against the team is nothing to get excited about. The big guys were good scoring tonight, and we couldn't shoot from the outside, opposite of everything from the last game. We couldn't get Pippen open to get some shots. That Moran guy was destroying us. They should have had him shoot every possession. We had to double him eventually because he was 7/7. Conroy destroyed all through the second half after he only had 2 points at halftime. We turned the ball over 8 times, that's pretty high for us. About the only thing we did well was force turnovers. 23 without pressing is a lot, so that's one thing we did well along with scoring in the paint, but you really ought to be able to do that against Vermont anyway. I'd just like to have one game where everyone plays up to their potential. Every game the offense is missing, the defense is missing, the outisde shooting is missing, the interior scoring is missing, the rebounding is pitiful. It's just all around bad basketball. Just because we beat a bad team having a bad game doesn't make me happy.

Tovarich: Can I just play a copy of my last postgame?

Reporter: What are you unhappy about today?

Tovarich: The entire second half. It was pitiful. We allowed 76% shooting, 75% on 3's. We were 14/31. We were outrebounded in the second half. We couldn't hit a shot, we couldn't get a stop. I want to get the bench more minutes, but other than the SR bigs, I can't trust any of them to do much of anything, not that the starters did much in the second half either. We were lucky to build up such a big lead in the first half so we could get our asses kicked after halftime and survive it somehow.

Reporter: Is winning the turnover battle the only way for this team to win?

Tovarich: Sure seems like it. We don't play defense. We rebounded in the first half at least. We got to the foul line more than they did, though they spent a lot of time there after halftime. We were shooting 3's well in the first half and then it went to hell after. Accumulating more shot attempts via turnover literally seems like the only thing we can do well.

Reporter: Why do so many teams press you?

Tovarich: I don't know. It doesn't really work out well for much of anyone, though it's obnoxious. I don't know if we just happen to be playing opponents who do that a lot or if they think there's something about us, but we sure are seeing more than our fair share.

              Reporter: What about

Tovarich: (interrupting) You know, it's New Year's Eve. Maybe everyone would like to just go celebrate and stop asking me more questions. See you all next year.

Tovarich: Well, the score looks nice at least.

Reporter: So today you're unhappy with rebounding?

Tovarich: -1 against Georgia Southern is pretty bad.

Reporter: What else wasn't good enough?

Tovarich: Everything in the paint. They only gave them 4 blocks, but it was probably 8. Fleming was soft. Riley was soft. Grady was soft. Carbaugh is at least finishing in the paint more often than not. He's not supposed to be as good of a rebounder as RIley, and they tied at 4, which is one more than GA SO's point guard.

Reporter: Are you thinking of making a change there in the starting lineup?

Tovarich: It's a possibility. I need Riley to rebound. He's an occasional scorer, but Carbaugh shoots far better and I don't know why because the people who rate people say their offense should all be the same outside of Carbaugh's superior awareness. Maybe that matters more than I think. Maybe being aware of where the rim and the paint are is a skill I should be more concerned with. Maybe Riley just needs glasses. So I try to just consider what we need at the time, but I just want to outrebound a tiny school for once. It shouldn't be this hard. We don't get many cupcakes until we reach later in the season and start playing our fellow castouts.

7 assists from Hale is a nice upgrade over recent games, and Fleming with 8 boards, 3 assists, and 4 steals is nice.

Tovarich: That was an awesome second half from the bench after their 4-point performance in the first. I've been waiting for that for a long time. I was starting to think I might be able to go tan on the beach in Barrow before it happened.

Reporter: Was this a revenge game for last year's elite 8?

Tovarich: I was hoping it would feel that way when I scheduled it. Now I see they have about as much to do with last year's team as we have to do with the Tour de France.

Reporter: Is this the complete performance from the team you've been waiting for?

Tovarich: There's a lot we could have done better. They had a horrible shooting performance in the second half. I doubt we can take much responsibility for it. That 20-2 run coming out of the half ended it. The run the bench went on, I'm not sure what it was, like 19-2 or something also was overdue. I often worry about the 2014-2015 team when I watch them, but I feel 1% better about it today. I hope we can muster some of that performance against these good teams we have coming up.

Reporter: Have you given the team any pep talks this year?

Tovarich: I don't really need to utilize those much this year. Dillard's the only one that's unhappy and I don't wish to mislead him by making him feel good about himself or his future here.

                      Reporter: How's recruiting going?

Tovarich: We're looking at some random people, we're not close on anyone, except hopefully our JuCo PF. I expect that scholarship for Dillard to open up and we'll see who's available. I'm not even sure we have a chance at anyone who'd be an improvement over him, but we'll see. It always looks rough for us and it all comes together at the end usually, and this'll be no different.

Tovarich: That final score was hard to imagine when we were trudging along with a 24-23 lead in the 1st half. That Lagana guy finally stopped destroying us when we somehow got him a second foul in the first half and they fell apart as soon as he sat down for those last 4 minutes.

Reporter: Is it tough to get motivated playing in an empty arena?

Tovarich: Yeah, you'd think the great town of West Long Branch might get excited to watch a top 25 team, but they looked like only about 250 people showed up. They also just had a home with Gonzaga, so I guess the top 20 teams showing up was already boring for them after that one.

Reporter: Are these last two dominant performances going to carry over into the Michigan game?

Tovarich: That would be nice, but somehow I doubt it. I've got a few days to scout Michigan and the whopping 11 games they've played this year so far. I don't know how they managed to only play 2 games in November and they must have been the last team in America to start playing on November 23rd finally. Looks like they go to Illinois this weekend before we show up so maybe they'll be more focused on their conference games. I'm just glad they haven't fallen apart like most of the pre-season top 25 teams I schedule. I need the SOS after being #1 in the RPI last year only to get a 4 seed anyway.

Reporter: What do you make of Grady's night?

Tovarich: He started 0/3 and got pushed around pretty bad. His lone rebound was because there was no one else within 10 feet of him. The 4 steals look nice, but our bigs really poach a lot of steals on passes the guards deflect. Still, accidentally being in the right place at the right time is a nice skill. But he's been soft in the paint lately and I need that to get better.

Does the game not count steals correctly? Official NCAA stat-keeping rules say that the deflecting player gets credit for the steal, not the one who catches it. That's too bad if so.

It definitely gives it to who ends up with it, or my big guys would have almost none. They definitely don't count blocks correctly, much too strict about those. It counts rebounds 90-95% of the time, but they never quite add up all the way like they should. Assists seemingly are done pretty well.

I've absolutely noticed how bad it is at counting blocks.
