Tovarich: Those numbers must all look eerily similar to the game 2 weeks ago.

Reporter: You fistpumped one time when Southern Utah made a FT?

Tovarich: Absolutely. They missed 3 times and got the offensive rebound and it turned into 7 points because of that. It's kind of embarrassing to have to root for the other team to make FT's, but it's better that way with our rebounding. I'm shocked to see only -1. They had TEN offensive rebounds. It was pitiful.

Reporter: Was it good or bad they stopped playing the 3-2 zone so quickly?

Tovarich: I think we were 7/10 on 3's and they gave it up and went man the rest of the game. I don't think that was a good idea on their part. It was only 25-17. Odds are we'd have cooled off at some point. They looked like they barely knew how to play man to man. We didn't exactly stop their big guy either, but get it to a big down in the post, and we scored almost every time.

Reporter: The first bracketology is finally out and you're the second to last team in. Do you think that's a good sign?

Tovarich: I doubt it. We've got one more cupcake and then we got sit at home for 3 weeks so we can't really build our resume up while everyone else can. It's a little disappointing 5 losses might keep you out. This schedule is definitely tougher than last year's. We were comfortably in as an 8 seed last year with 4 losses. I guess Canisius is a tough loss, but we had one of those last year to Southern Utah. We played 4 ranked teams to last year's 3. We played 8 power schools to last year's 5. I'd be hugely disappointed to find out we should just play all cupcakes to avoid losing and that SOS doesn't really matter. There are usually some bidstealers in conference tournaments. So it looks bleak for us.

Tovarich: -26 in rebounds against a cupcake is easily the most embarrassing rebounding performance we've ever had, in a long history of pitiful rebounding. I know we shot too many 3's, but the shots in the paint by the big guys were awful too. They kept leaving us open, so we kept shooting them. We made just enough to keep ourselves in it. That game was with a tournament spot possibly on the line and we embarrassed ourselves.

Reporter: Did you feel like you still had a chance at the end?

Tovarich: We had the shot at the buzzer in regulation miss. I'm not surprised. We're down 1 in OT and we have to foul. They make the first, miss the second, but we can't get a rebound. So they go back to the line and go up 4 and then it's basically over. Then we miss a desperation 3 and have to foul again, and they make, then miss, then get the rebound. Then we have to foul again and now it's 7 and it's really over. But we could've held for the last shot down 2 but the rebounding was pathetic. A decent high school could've rebounded better. Almanson averages 5.5 and we give him 16. The C averages 6 and he gets 10. I don't know why we can't rebound. It's pathetic.

Reporter: Did starting Scalzo throw the team off?

Tovarich: Maybe it did. I don't know. He's a SR so we started him even though he hasn't been active all year. That shouldn't matter, but maybe it did. Everything was off. I don't think he's why we were -26 in rebounding against an overgrown high school though.

Reporter: Will you care about the NIT?

Tovarich: Seems unlikely. I'd rather skip it and move on to next year after that.

Oof, rough loss. Should go with that 4 bigs lineup and see what it does to your rebounding.

Re: University of Alaska-Anchorage Basketball (CH2K8)

It's borderline pointless because there were TWENTY THREE days from the Upstate game to Selection Sunday so everything was completely different, but simming a previous file as a win, Anchorage ended up the first team out and the #1 overall seed in the NIT.

Tovarich: That might be the longest game I've ever sat through with all the FT's. I don't think Teddy Valentine would be assigned an NIT game, but whoever it was sure needed the TV time.

Reporter: What does this win mean?

Tovarich: That we have to play in the 2nd round too.

Reporter: What did you think about being on the road?

Tovarich: Yeah, whatever. We're the higher seed. The court definitely said Wright State, though the fight song was definitely Arkansas', but somehow we got a lot of fans. We were going to have to fly over here anyway I guess.

Reporter: You won the rebounding battle!

Tovarich: I sure hope so. We had all their big guys with 2 fouls before halftime. They barely played and we came out a whole +1. It was still bad.

Reporter: Were you surprised not to be in the tournament?

Tovarich: Even if we won, it was iffy. We sealed it with the Upstate loss. 13 or so spots in the seedings is a lot for one game though, it's just supposed to be one game. There's not a lot of leeway with our situation. 5 losses may even have been too many. It really tells ya you shouldn't play many good teams, so you can avoid losses. They seem to be punished more than winning seems to be rewarded.

Tovarich: We looked down and out midway through that first half. I think we were down 14 or 16, I can't remember. It was going badly. They were nice enough to keep pressing and once we stopped turning it over, Wilkins was dominant beating his guy down the court and drawing fouls. We needed a superhuman effort to overcome Steve Nash and we got it.

Reporter: How do you feel about the travel schedule?

Tovarich: Yeah, we've got to be back in Alaska in 48 hours? Luckily Texas Tech was at Ball State so they don't have much of a head start.

Reporter: They were ranked when you went to Lubbock and beat them and they barely won a game after until the NIT started. What do you think about their form?

Tovarich: Impossible to say. They went 4-8 down the stretch there and fell apart, but obviously they've figured it out somewhat to get to this point. We had a huge lead and almost lost it. I think we were lucky to escape.

Reporter: Would advancing to MSG for the semifinal be a big deal?

Tovarich: As much as I was disappointed in the Upstate game, we have all 10 guys who play back next year, so maybe now that I've had time to mentally move on from that game, it's probably a good building block for next season.

Tovarich: Great game by the centers. That second half was probably a little boring. I know we dribbled the cover off the ball for a while, especially in the middle of the half when I felt that run coming like they had the first game.

Reporter: Bob Knight wants to know how much you paid the refs.

Tovarich: I'm surprised he didn't throw a chair and get ejected. His bench was 10-13 though. He should be happy the refs gave him an excuse to put them in. They should've played a lot more. They'd probably have beaten us.

Reporter: How do you feel about all the scheduling of this tournament?

Tovarich: We should've been home for Wright State, then gone to Seton Hall and Texas Tech. 48 hours in between the 2nd and 3rd round is nonsense. Now we at least have 5 days to get to MSG.

Reporter: You're actually going to the Carrier Dome coach.

Tovarich: Well, that's dumb and disappointing.
