Tovarich: At least Fleming recovered from the last couple of subpar offensive performances. Lots of other people are still struggling on offense. We can get away with it against this team. We should have one more gimme here before things pick up.

Reporter: What's happened to the rebounding numbers?

Tovarich: You got excited about them too early. That was the fluke and this is more normal for us.

Reporter: Should anyone besides Farley shoot 3's?

Tovarich: Crandle is still at 41% for the year, so we'll let him keep going. Luz should be better and has been better, but he's really off this year. He was in the 40's his first couple seasons and he's really I guess lost confidence coming off the bench.

Reporter: Is it important you get back in the rankings?

Tovarich: No. It might be better if we don't.

Tovarich: The offense is still a little off. We're lucky to be playing three teams in a row who've also struggled to score. We wouldn't beat many teams playing like this. We'll need to be a lot better with the next two opponents.

Reporter: Was the rebounding an improvement from the last three games?

Tovarich: I was shocked to see we hung on to 31-30 on the boards when they outrebounded us 5-0 in the last 30 seconds. If you can't outrebound that team, there's not much hope for you. So, we have hope there, but barely. It needs to be a lot better.

      Reporter: Why is Wilkins struggling?

Tovarich: 10/29 in the last three is pretty brutal. It's not just him though, it's almost the entire team except for Fleming. We're just having a mid-season crisis I guess. Hopefully it's just playing down to some inferior competition and we'll motivate ourselves to play a little better these next two.

Tovarich: It looks nice and easy in the end, but it was an even game until about 9 minutes to go. Then they went cold, like really cold and we were finally improving our shooting after a rough first half. They helped a lot with the turnovers.

Reporter: Was this a step forward for rebounding?

Tovarich: It didn't feel like we won on the boards. I suspect a lot of rushed 3's in the end helped. Even before that though, they were firing off the 3's if you gave them an inch of space to get it off. They start a FR at C, so you kinda hope you can take advantage, but he still outrebounded our FR C 8-5.

          Reporter: How about Hale's performance?

Tovarich: He's been great with the assists. Everyone seems to shoot it well most of the time when he feeds it to them. Offense isn't typically his thing, but he couldn't miss tonight. He's a much needed option on offense when other people are struggling, which has been frequent lately. Anything we get out of the PG is just gravy. I don't expect anything there except some breakaway layups on a steal, but even that he often struggles with.

Reporter: Is Dillard ever going to be a significant contributor on offense?

Tovarich: It doesn't seem like it. He's only a FR. We'll see if he improves. He has skills, but it doesn't seem to translate to scoring. 2/11 on 3's for the year is a small sample size, but it isn't instilling any confidence so far. I expect to start our guy redshirting right now. Dillard will have to decide if he's going to spend his career coming off the bench.

Reporter: Have you overcome the rat poison to go 2-0 after getting back in the rankings?

Tovarich: We made it look hard for a while tonight. BYU's obviously underperforing but they're capable of a great game. Hopefully we'll exploit whatever it is they're struggling at, but rat poison may not be responsible for that loss if it happens. Then we really should hopefully have an easy time in the tournament @ St. Mary's. If we can't win that, I'll blame the rat poison for sure.

Tovarich: I wonder how many times in history a team shot 12/21 and outrebounded their opponent 2-1 and managed to lose? BYU is wildly underperforming their capability compared to what they should be on paper.

Reporter: What did you think about their PG's performance?

Tovarich: It was wild. 26 and 11 is crazy. I know he's a SR but he was only averaging 9 and 3 before this lol. We do it a lot though.

Reporter: What went wrong with rebounding?

Tovarich: That was as pitiful as it gets. I know some of rebounding is getting misses and we didn't get many. That was crazy shooting by both teams. They were 17/24 after halftime. That's insane.

Reporter: What saved the game for you?

Tovarich: The same thing that usually does-turnovers. We don't force misses, so we have to go for steals. We don't get rebounds either when we do get misses. 12 has to be a school record for worst rebounding ever.

Reporter: When you got the steal up 7 with 56 seconds to go, are you surprised they didn't foul?

Tovarich: Stunned, especially when they needed to foul us 4 times still. They had the lead down to 5 with all the insane shooting, and all the momentum. I probably shouldn't have waited until 4 minutes to go to slow the game down. The comeback was on pretty much right out of the gate. It took all of 3:58 for them to go from 19 down to 9.

Reporter: Was Hale the designated FT shooter for the end of close games? You haven't really shot intentional FT's yet this season.

Tovarich: I prefer the big guys shoot them actually because they are the ones at the line the most. They have the most practice. But it didn't matter. Hale was trying to pass, but as soon as the defender thinks about fouling you, you're not allowed to pass the ball anymore. He has some kind of jedi mind power to stop you from passing.

Reporter: Why no 3's in the second half?

Tovarich: They didn't play any zone in the second. I'd have assumed we were going to cool off anyway after a 7/11 first half, though BYU didn't, so maybe that wouldn't have applied to us either. They were tight on our perimiter shooters. When their coach says stay tight, they listen. When I tell mine to stay tight on them, they don't.

14-1 is a good place to be in at the halfway point. BYU is a good win, even if you get it with unlikely stats.

Tovarich: We had a rough first half on the boards. I'm not sure the final numbers really bare out how it went on the boards, obviously getting skewed there toward the end. But we were -5 or so well into the second half there. It's tough to find a whole lot to complain about, but I can always go to rebounds.

Reporter: What advice would you give their PG?

Tovarich: When they literally refuse to guard you, maybe don't keep shooting. I've played loose on some guys with cold shooting, but I've never instructed my PG to actually go stand in the middle of the paint to guard the passing lane down inside. Some might say they admire his confidence and keep shooting until you shoot your way out of it, but I am definitely not going to say that in this case.

Reporter: Why play the starters so many minutes?

Tovarich: I was unhappy with the rebounding, so I wanted to give them some time to improve that. We went from -4 at halftime to +6, but of course that was their shooting, so it didn't really work in any meaningful way. The bench was better at it.

Tovarich: It's always more fun when you are down 9-0 in less than a minute and the other teams makes their first 9 shots and you spot them a 22-8 lead.

Reporter: Why didn't you call a timeout or do something to stop their early momentum?

Tovarich: I've probably called less than 10 timeouts this entire season. I am confident in the team to work their way through it. Wilkins started 2/7 and he ended up with a tremendous night after I benched him for Carbaugh early. They'll figure it out.

Reporter: What did you think of the pace of the game?

Tovarich: It makes no real sense for a team who only plays 8 players to full court press you after every basket. 72 FG attempts might be the most we've ever had. We did a poor job with the outside shooting, but they wanted a fast paced game, so they got it. We just did a home and home with them, so I knew what to expect.

Reporter: Both starting bigs had 9 boards. Is that an improvement despite the -1 team total?

Tovarich: It wasn't good enough. That backup C of theirs is 7'1", but he's a backup and averages less than 2 per game, so for him to get 8 is pretty bad.

Tovarich: That one was pretty even game except free throws. We must have brought our refs with us. I'm still not sure who our refs are or where we get them from, or if they're smart enough to be in favor of one team or the other. And of course, my favorite statistic, which is turnovers. That's one thing we're pretty consistent at and need to be to make up for rebounding.

Reporter: How do you assess the 3-point shooting?

Tovarich: After we started 0-12, I thought it was really good.

Reporter: How about the rebounding, but Fleming specifically?

Tovarich: After he had 7 in the first 4 minutes of the game, it was pretty bad. I'm not one to complain about a guy getting 10 in a game. That's probably top 10 in school history, but I knew it wouldn't last and didn't want to sub him out. I even called a timeout so he could rest and stay in a little longer. Not surprisingly, it didn't last.

Reporter: Is the schedule turning out to be as hard as you thought?

Tovarich: The results are better than I thought. But we had 2 then top-15 teams in the Great Alaska Shootout, which I said at the time, I'm not so sure would stay there and neither of them are anywhere to be found. Washington State and Pepperdine were ranked, but we had them at home. They've both come back to earth as well. Connecticut was supposed to be better. We still have Oregon, who is still in the top 10 despite 3 losses already. I figured 5 power opponents was a solid number. I thought the depth of the schedule was improved too. Temple, San Diego State, BYU etc. Lots of solid mids and some major schools, a handful of power opponents. It turns out a lot of them are having disappointing seasons, and you can't predict that. The power school moniker doesn't necessarily mean anything. Auburn was 6-25 or whatever last year. I had no idea Pepperdine would be ranked when I put them on the schedule. There's some randomness to the process and a whole lot of things you can't control, so the results are better than I thought because the schedule is turning out to be easier than I intended.

Tovarich: Turnovers carried us to another win. I think we were tied with 5 or 6 minutes to go and then we were able to get on an 8-0 run and they couldn't keep up from there.

Reporter: Why did the bigs get all the shots?

Tovarich: They're a pretty small team. We should've been able to take advntage, and we did in scoring. Not rebounding of course. 4 dwarves and Muggsy Bogues would outrebound us. They were tight on the shooters anyway. We hit our first 2 3's of the game against the zone and then we never saw it again, so open 3's weren't really available. But they lacked height. That's why we wanted it to be about size and that's why they wanted a jump shooting contest.

Reporter: What will you do with an entire week off before the next game?

Tovarich: We'll go see the pandas at the zoo maybe or go swim with the sea lions. It would almost make sense to go back home for 5 days or so and just come back, but who wants to spend New Year's in Alaska whe you can be somewhere sunny?

                        Reporter: How's recruiting going?

Tovarich: As usual, we're no one's first choice. I haven't offered a scholarship yet. We're in the long game as always. I think we'll end up with a 5th scholarship for Crawford, who I'm sure is on his way out. Grady might be too, but I'm going to talk him into staying for his SR year. We're talking to a ton of people, but not really visiting anyone yet, not probably going to offer anyone until late. We're just waiting to see who's left over. I doubt we'll be anyone's first choice. We'll just try to swoop in when their first love leaves them at the altar.

Tovarich: Outside shots were hard to come by for both teams. Luckily we had the superior bigs who scored efficiently. Rebounding was mediocre until all the uncontested ones we got with all their desperation 3's.

Reporter: There were about 7 minutes to go and you hadn't made a 3 yet, were you nervous?

Tovarich: I like that we've made a 3 in every game since I got here, so it's a point of pride, yes. It wasn't as rough as the night we started 0-12, but I think we made it to 0-7 at least, maybe 0-8. We had a solid lead, so we were going to get one no matter how long it took if it came to keeping the streak alive.

Reporter: Why so many minutes for Luz and fewer for Crandle?

Tovarich: Crandle just got unlucky that he was winded and I subbed him and we had a really long amount of time go by without a stoppage to sub him back.

Reporter: Why is this team more consistent than last year's?

Tovarich: We have these weird things called seniors. Not many have made it through to their fourth year so far without transferring at some point when their playing time goes down. Our team unity is solid. Even though we're starting 2 FR, their talent is superior to anything we've had so far. We're streaky at outside shooting, and we're still bad at rebounding, but everything is trending in the right direction.

Tovarich: We were lucky to have such a good first half and for them to struggle. You figured it would even out a little in the second, but 8/24 shooting, 7/19 in the paint with tons of easy misses was some of the most incompetent basketball I've ever witnessed. We were lucky they ONLY shot 11/22 in the second. It felt like they were bombing 3's all over the place for a while there, so with about 5 minutes to go, somehow still up 12 despite the brutally awful execution, I figured it was best to slow the game down. I couldn't watch the big guys try to score anymore.

Reporter: Is the team tired from being away from home for 31 days?

Tovarich: I don't think so. We still went 10-0. I don't feel so insane for scheduling such a crazy long trip anymore. No one wants to be in Alaska in December and January anyway. There were some decent teams on this trip, no elite ones, but plenty of losable games that last year's team certainly would've lost.

Reporter: What can you do to jumpstart the poor 3-point shooting lately?

Tovarich: Hopefully just seeing our home court here will improve things. The big guys had a great first half to compensate. The second half no one could do anything right, but we were just good enough on defense forcing turnovers to make up for it. It's a slump from out there, but it's not a crisis yet. This team has too much talent in too many different places for it all to go horribly wrong too often.
