Maddux beats the Reds again 9-5, moves to 8-0

Greg Maddux (8-0 2.57) has the Reds number this year. He ran into trouble early on and was replaced after 5 2/3 innings, but it was enough for him to remain perfect on the season, his winning streak at 8 games. Reds starting pitcher Chris Reitsma (1-5 5.44)has good stuff, but has struggled all season, getting hammered quite frequently. He tends to hang a lot of pitches over the plate. In the first inning the Braves struck for four runs, with Chipper Jones smashing his 14th homerun of the season to leftcenter. "We really knocked the ball around the park today. Had it not been for my big hit in the first inning, we might have lost. Normally we don't have four errors in a ballgame", said a smiling Chipper Jones. Reds Manager Bob Boone declined comment after the game, but we did get a hold of struggling pitcher Reitsma. "What can I say? All I can do is go out in my next start and concentrate on keeping the ball down. Pretty soon I'm going to prove I belong in the rotation. We needed this win today".

            Reds beat Braves 4-1!

Bruce Chen has been the suprise of Cincinnati's pitching staff, moving to a 6-2 record and 1.72 ERA after striking out 17 batters and allowing only one run in a complete game win over the Braves. Russ Ortiz (3-3 4.67) only lasted 5 2/3 innings against before Reds outfielder Ruben Mateo smacked a two run double down the left field line in the sixth inning. Chipper Jones hit his 15th homerun of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning. "Bruce really shut us down. We had no answer for him. With the kind of offense Cincinnati has, if they had better pitching, they would be the best team in the National League."

Braves strike early, coast to 11-6 victory over Reds

Something just goes awry with the Reds when they play the Braves. As in the first game of the series, Atlanta struck early for eight runs in the first two innings. "It is awfully difficult to have any confidence of coming back from something like that. I really let the ballclub down with my performance. You know that going into Atlanta you have to be on top of your game.", said losing pitcher Paul Wilson (1-2 7.71). Shawn Green hit his 21st and 22nd homeruns for the Reds, while knocking in five runs.

Gabe White, who has an ERA of 2.18, was the only thing going for Cincinnati pitching-wise. He pitched five innings of one run ball, striking out five. "We may have to give him a shot in the rotation. It would hurt our ball club in close games because he wouldn't be there, but we can't keep trying to play catchup", said Reds manager Bob Boone, shaking his head in disbelief. Paul Byrd ((3-3 4.77) got the win for the Braves, getting by on ground balls for seven innings.

                  Player of the game:
                  Shawn Green
                  3 for 4 with 2 HR's, 5 RBI's and a double

                        Reds 6 Marlins 3

Bartolo Colon (9-1 3.35) won his ninth game of the season, mostly holding runners on and striking out nine batters. Newly acquired second baseman Mark Loretta came through with a two-run single in the top of the sixth inning to warm his welcome to the Reds. "We got Loretta mostly for his defense, we really needed to plug some holes in our interior defense. He can play multiple positions. That's all we ask of him.", said manager Bob Boone as he whisked off to the visiting Reds clubhouse for a team meeting.

Reds flutter way to victory 6-4 over Marlins

Newly acquired starting pitcher Tim Wakefield (9-1 2.00) earned his ninth win of the season by recording 10 K's in 5 innings of work. "His knuckler was all over the place. A couple of times there they jacked a few off the wall in left, but we got him out of there before it was too late.", said Bob Boone. The Reds have one of the best relief pitching cores in the majors, and it showed tonight. Mike Remlinger, Gabe White and Scott Williamson combined for 4 innings, allowing only one run to score on six hits, and striking out four. Williamson earned his sixth save of the season. In a game of small rallies, Shawn Green hit an opposite field two-run homer to left center, his 23rd of the season. The Reds improved to 30-25 (1/2 GB of Pirates) while the Marlins fell to 27-30 (9 1/2 GB of Phillies).
