Year 1- Nortfolk State: 27-5 and sweet sixteen birth(MEAC Coach of the year)
Year 2- Nortfolk State: 15-17 and first round appearance(MEAC Coach of the year)
In year 3 Coach Reed heads north from Norfolk,VA to the Bronx,NY to coach the Fordham Rams. The Rams' AD is excited with the future of the team because of Reed's past success and the current team. In the 1st year Reed lead the Rams to a 31-2 record and an appearance in the national title game. Overjoyed by the success of that year, coach Reed brings in a solid recruiting class and puts together a tough schedule.
Year 3- Fordham: 31-2 National runner up (A-10 Coach of the year)
In year 4, the Rams had high hopes, but they were dashed as the team went 10-19 and no NCAA tournament appearance. Coach Reed thought about bolting to another job but when he saw the job offers out there he thought best to stay in the Bronx and work out the problems.
Year 4- Fordham: 10-19
In year 5, the mood was optimistic...but weary. The regualr season was nothing spectacular and the team was in danger of missing the big dance again, but in the A-10 conference tournament, the Fordham Rams showed the heart of a champion by overcoming odds and winning the tourney. The Rams entered the NCAA Tourney as the number 8 seed, with big wins over Michigan State and Texas. The team rode the wave of momentum to the national title game against Texas Tech and eventually won it all in a year of overacheving.
Year 5- Fordham: 22-13 National Champions (1st career national title)
Year 6 would see high hopes once again, but this time the Rams would not fold under pressure as they went 26-9 with a 2nd straight national title game appearance and their 3rd appearance in 4 years. At that time the college basketball world was asking one question, "Are the Fordham Rams really a 21st century dynasty?" when asked at a press confrence on how his teams are always playing in April, coach Reed said "It's a mixture of selflessness, confidence, and chemistry. Selflessness because every one the kids always put team success over personal stats. Confidence because these kids bought into the system I implemented here with little hesitation, and chemistry because all of them have been here a long time and nobody has declared for the NBA draft." Life was good in the "Boogie Down Bronx" for awhile until Reed dropped a bombshell....he was leaving for the University of Conneticut.
Year 6- Fordham: 26-9 National Runners up (A-10 Coach of the year)
Year 7 would see our coach replacing legendary coach Jim Calhoun at UCONN, and for awhile it would seem like Reed would have to build the team from scratch. The top players at UCONN threatened to jump to the NBA if one of the remaining assitant coaches or Reed was not named the new head coach. The threat did not come to pass as all the upperclassmen stayed= a decision they would live to relish as they became part of history. 34-0 and a national title was what would be the final outcome for the Reed-led Huskies.
Year 7- UCONN: 34-0 National Champs (Big East coach of the year)
Year 8 would see the return of key parts in the national title team of last year, but it would also see the rise of Syracuse,it's biggest rival. The Orangemen had 4 Player of the year candidates on their starting 5.Going into their mid-season meeting with UCONN 'Cuse was the number 1 team in the land, and UCONN was still undefeated in the new season. It was a back and forth game until the 2nd half where the orangemen's PG scored 8 straight points and gave them a 5 point lead. With 45 seconds left, Coach Reed had an odd gameplan: Instead of repeatedly fouling the ball handler he told his players to foul him once. After that, 'cuse inbounded the ball and was met by swarms of navy blue jerseys. Reed's gameplan worked as the pressure forced 2 turnovers in 43 seconds and 5 points capped off by a buzzer beating 3. In overtime the momentum carried over as the huskies went on a 20-0 run to win the game. After the game coach Reed said that that game would surely set the tone for the late season push. After that game the Huskies steamrolled over all teams-including number 2 duke. The Big East tourney would see SU/UCONN: round 2. Unlike their 1st game, this was an anticlimatic game as the huskies won by 8. The NCAA tourney would be a cakewalk as the huskies cruised to a 39-0 record, a 2nd national title. Coach Reed would also reach a milestone as he became the youngest coach to achieve 200 career wins.
Year 8- UCONN: 39-0 National Champs (200 wins, Big East coach of the year)
Year 9 would see another undeafeated team and another national title, but this time, Ryan Reed would get his due respect- as he won national coach of the year.
Year 9- UCONN: 37-0 National Champs (National,Big East coach of the year)
Year 10 would not see anoter undefeated team as the Huskies went 25-11, but it would see an unprecedented 4th straight national title, as the Huskies edged the Hoosiers of Indiana by two points in the national title game.
Year 10- UCONN: 25-11 National Champs
Now we are in the early stages of the offseason...as coach Reed marches onward in his Quest for Greatness.
