    2004-05 Saint Joseph's Preview
    Friday October 14th, 2004
    The Philadelphia Inquirer

St. Joe's had a huge 2003-04 season, and it will be hard to live up to the expectations of last years team. After going undefeated in the regular season last year, and making it to the Elite Eight, the team lost Jameer Nelson (2003-04 Player of the Year) and Delonte West who was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft. The Hawks have a great coach though, Phil Martelli last seasons coach of the year will have a lot to overcome, with this years team needing the most work than any he has seen in his 10-year career. This year the Hawks will be fighting for their fifth straight Atlantic-10 title and a third straight NCAA Tournament berth. With 10 returning players from last year winning team, the Hawks should still be motivated to try to win. The first thing the Hawks need is a scorer, someone to fill the shoes of Jameer Nelson and Delonte West, who last year scored almost half the teams total points. Coach Martelli will probably look to senior forward Pat Carroll to take on the role, he was the only player besides Nelson and West to average double digits in scoring last year. Forward John Bryant and center Dwayne Jones also will be looked upon as scoring threats, and they also are very good on defense. This years team has four freshmen to mention of, there are two guards, Abdulai Jalloh who is 6'1" and Pete Kathopoulis who is 5'11". The other two are forwards, Rob Ferguson who is 6'8" and Pat Calathes who is 6'10". Freshman Pat Calathes is very dangerous from beyond the arch, and Abdulai Jalloh is very energetic and can drive to the hoop well. This years team will be quick on both sides of the court and should be fun to watch.

        Key Games:
November 23rd, at Kansas - St. Joe's will play their hardest game of the year first as they take on the #2 Jayhawks on the road to start the season. They are huge underdogs and it will take a huge performance to compete with Kansas.

December 10th, vs UC Irvine - The game itself may not to difficult, but the Hawks will be competing in the Mutual Fund Shootout and will be playing on the West Coast, with teams like San Francisco and Pepperdine.

December 31st, at Ohio St. - The Buckeyes are a big rival for the Hawks, and they will have to play well as they will be on the road for a game on New Year's Eve.

January 25th, at Pennsylvania - Another St. Joe's rival, and another road game and challenge for the Hawks. Could be a huge game in the Philadelphia Big 5 tournament.

February 7th, vs Villanova - A team from the Big East, that is very capable of standing out this season and making a run in the tourney. This game is going to be a home game for the Hawks, but will still be tough. Also, could play a factor in the Philadelphia Big 5.

Looking good so far, glad to see somebody doing a legacy with a Philly 5 squad..

Good luck this season, you'll probably need it.. the Hawks aren't nearly the team they were last year.. obviously.

It is going to be tough, especially since I have to start off against Kansas.

Thanks, this should turn out to be a good legacy.

Good luck this season, you'll probably need it.. the Hawks aren't nearly the team they were last year.. obviously.
It is going to be tough, especially since I have to start off against Kansas.
