    Re: Auburn Tigers (CH2K5)

    Fall Signing Period

During the early recruit signing period, the Auburn Tigers addressed a huge problem of their program: size. The Tigers offered 2/8 scholarships to talented big men, one of which was the Mr. Basketball from his state.

    Juan Sparks

Sparks was the first to sign his letter of intent to play with Auburn next season, and should step in the starting lineup immediately when he arrives on campus. This big man is a bit undersized in height, but makes up for it with pure muscle, speed, and scoring ability.

    Rashad Low

Another talented big man, Low stands in at 6'10" and should man the center position next season. Low is the reigning Mr. Basketball out of Alabama, and chose to stay near home, committing to Auburn.

So far, the Auburn Tigers already have high hopes for this recruiting class, and the season has just begun.

The Auburn Tigers took their undefeated record on the road when they traveled north to South Carolina, taking on the College of Charleston Cougars.

In the early stages, neither team seemed to be able to gain much of an advantage. Toney Douglas wasn't his usual dominant self, but still managed to put up 11 points in the first half. Both teams shot near 40% for the half, and Auburn came out with a two point lead going into the intermission.

The Cougars came out with a mission in the second half, but the Tigers weren't about to roll over and die. Douglas stepped his game up, but still missed more shots than usual. Tony Mitchell of CoC put on a shooting clinic on his home floor, and capped off a 14-2 Cougars run with a three-pointer. Auburn resorted to fouling at the end, but it didn't work, as their undefeated record fell by the score of 72-64.

When asked for an explanation, all Coach Neverett had to offer was, "Psyblast jinxed us, simple as that."

After dropping their first game of the season, the Auburn Tigers returned back to the Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum with anger, and were looking to take it out on the visiting UNLV Rebels.

Early on, Jerrell Blassingame and Ian Young went back and forth. The two were both electric from the field, dropping shot after shot, and both set up teammates nicely. Toney Douglas also chipped in for Auburn, and went a perfect 5-5 from the field in the first half. Odartey Blankson was a force in the paint for the Runnin` Rebels, and punished any defender than attempted to stay in his way. At the break, the Tigers clung to a three point lead.

In the second half, Blankson took over for UNLV. Showing his versatility, he caught an alley-oop over a defender, then stepped back to hit a three on the Rebels' next possession. Douglas was the Tigers' answer, and earned most of his points from the charity stripe in the second half. With a minute left, the Rebels were down, and tried the fouling strategy. After fouling the wrong guys, however, the Rebels fell to Auburn, 90-84.

            Players Of The Game
            AUB - Toney Douglas - 27 points, 7-9 FG, 3-3 3PT FG, 10-13 FT, 12 assists, 8 rebounds

The Auburn Tigers were looking to extend their winning streak to two games against the Belmont Bruins of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The first half went well for both teams, not something Auburn expected. The Bruins shot very well from the field, hitting 55% of their shots in the first period. Led by their big man, Andrew Preston, Belmont actually held quite a lead late in the half. However, after a 12-0 Tigers run, capped off by a Toney Douglas three-pointer, Auburn regained the lead and had a comfortable margin at the intermission.

After the break, the two teams came out hot. Douglas did everything well for Auburn, and was only a couple of rebounds shy of a triple double within the first few minutes of the second half. Belmont's Preston and Josh Goodwin lit up the Tigers, but the scoring trio of Douglas, Young, and Watson for Auburn was just too much. After a late rebound, Douglas had his triple double, and Auburn grabbed the win, 89-81.
