HEARTBREAK IN THE COLISEUM: TOREROS SCARE #14 USC EARLY BEFORE TROJANS ROLL 65-21

LOS ANGELES — For 20 glorious minutes on Saturday evening, the San Diego Toreros had the college football world's attention.

Playing in front of 77,000 hostile fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Coach Earl's 1-5 underdogs didn't just show up against the 14th-ranked USC Trojans.

They punched them in the mouth.

"That's who we are," Coach Earl said afterward, his voice hoarse but proud. "That's who we're building to become. We didn't flinch."

The game could not have begun more perfectly for the Toreros.

After forcing an early USC punt, Tyler Olsen orchestrated a methodical drive that culminated in a stunning sight: the senior quarterback breaking free for a 47-yard touchdown run, sprinting past bewildered Trojan defenders to stake USD to a 7-0 lead.

    The Coliseum fell silent.

USC responded with a 56-yard strike from Jayden Maiava to Ja'Kobi Lane to tie the game, but the Toreros refused to fade. The defense forced a fumble, and Joshua Townsend alertly scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 5 yards into the end zone.

    Touchdown, USD.

When Keyonte Tyson punched in a 6-yard run just before the end of the first quarter, the unthinkable was becoming reality: USD 14, USC 10.

"I looked at the scoreboard and just smiled," Tyson admitted. "We believed."

The second quarter brought even more magic.

Olsen, operating with poise that belied the moment, capped another drive with a 4-yard touchdown run early in the quarter. The Toreros lead had swelled to 21-10.

An 11-point lead over a top-15 team. On the road. With a 57 overall roster.

"We had them," Freeman said quietly. "We really had them."

But talent has a way of reasserting itself.

USC flipped a switch, and the game flipped with it. Over the final 11 minutes of the first half, the Trojans' high-powered Air Raid offense detonated:

Maiava to Lane for a 56-yard touchdown
Waymond Jordan bursting through the line for a 23-yard scoring run
Maiava finding Lake McRee from 19 yards out
Maiava connecting with Xavier Jordan from 3 yards as time expired

Four touchdowns. Twenty-eight points. The 21-10 lead had become a 38-21 deficit in what felt like the blink of an eye.

"Once they got rolling, it was hard to stop," defensive lineman Koby Garland said. "We knew coming in they were explosive. When they got hot, they got real hot."

The second half offered no reprieve. USC tacked on 27 more points while the USD offense, now playing from far behind, couldn't keep pace. The final score read 65-21, but those numbers don't capture the fight the Toreros showed when the game was still in question.

In a game filled with USC superstars and future NFL draft picks, the best player on the field wore a Toreros uniform.

Senior linebacker Chase Freeman delivered arguably the greatest individual defensive performance in USD's brief FBS history:

    Tackles 19
    Solo Tackles 11
    Tackles for Loss 3
    Sacks 1.0
    Quarterback Hurries Multiple

Freeman was everywhere. Shedding blocks, chasing down ball carriers from behind, diagnosing plays before they developed. He played like a man possessed.

"That's my guy," Garland said of Freeman. "He's been the heart of this defense all year. Tonight, the whole country saw what we see every day."

Freeman, typically stoic, allowed himself a small moment of reflection.

"Nineteen tackles," he said with a slight shake of his head. "I'd trade every single one for a win. But I hope people saw that we're not quitting. We're never quitting."

    WHAT IT MEANS

The Toreros fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in PAC-12 play. The losing streak now stands at six games.

But if you're looking for moral victories — and in Year 1 of an FCS-to-FBS rebuild, that's often all you have — this game provided one.

For 20 minutes, USD went toe-to-toe with one of the most talented teams in America and led by double digits.

"That's not a moral victory," Coach Earl said firmly. "That's proof of concept. We have the heart. We have the fight. We have the coaching. We just need more talent, more depth, more time.

"Next week against Stanford, we have a chance to show what we've learned. That's what matters now."

    LOOKING AHEAD: STANFORD

The Toreros return home to Torero Stadium for a golden opportunity. The Stanford Cardinal (0-7, 0-3 PAC-12) come to San Diego searching for their first win of the season.

For USD, it's a chance to secure the program's first-ever PAC-12 victory and snap a six-game losing streak.

"Stanford's struggling," Freeman acknowledged. "So are we. Someone's getting their first conference win Saturday. We're going to make sure it's us."

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT at Torero Stadium.
    RECRUITING BRIGHT SPOT

Despite the on-field struggles, the Toreros continue to build for the future on the recruiting trail. With the addition of Charlie Baum (WILL) and Eric Landry (DT), the class now stands at 7 commits, with more potentially on the way.
Gill Cahill CB ⭐⭐⭐ Chula Vista, CA
Dave Silva QB ⭐⭐⭐ Long Beach, CA
Dom Vaughn HB ⭐⭐⭐ Danville, CA
Charlie Baum WILL ⭐⭐⭐ Goodyear, AZ
Eric Landry DT ⭐⭐⭐ Menlo Park, CA
Zach Gay REDG ⭐⭐ Lawndale, CA
Maurice Chaisson LG ⭐⭐ Harbor City, CA

    THE LAST WORD

Chase Freeman sat in the visitor's locker room at the Coliseum, ice packs strapped to both shoulders, a 65-21 loss on the scoreboard, and a look of quiet determination on his face.

"People are going to see that score and think we got blown out," he said. "They didn't watch the game. They didn't see us up 21-10 in this building. They didn't see us fighting until the last whistle."

He stood up, grabbed his bag, and headed for the bus.

"Next week, we get another chance. That's all you can ask for in this game. Another chance."

Re: 🏈 San Diego Toreros: The All-California PAC-12 Experiment

      A LOSING STREAK MUST END

After a brutal stretch that saw the Toreros battle No. 14 USC tough in the first half before falling 65-21, USD returns home to Torero Stadium for their BEST CHANCE at a PAC-12 victory. Can the Toreros finally snap the 6-game losing streak and secure their first-ever PAC-12 conference win in front of the home crowd?

CITY CHAMPIONSHIP: TOREROS AIM TO SPOIL AZTECS' CONFERENCE TITLE DREAMS

        Opponent #24 San Diego State Aztecs (9-2, 4-2 PAC-12)
Location Snapdragon Stadium (San Diego, CA)
Kickoff Saturday, Nov 29 – 4:00 PM PT
        Series SDSU leads 2-0 (1ST PAC-12 MEETING)
Stakes City bragging rights, recruiting pipeline, PAC-12 title hopes

SAN DIEGO — When the San Diego Toreros board the short bus ride to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday afternoon, they'll carry with them the power to completely derail their crosstown rival's season.

The math for #24 San Diego State (9-2, 4-2 PAC-12) is simple but precarious: beat USD, and hope UCLA loses to USC. If both happen, the Aztecs earn a rematch with the Trojans in the PAC-12 Championship Game. If either fails — especially if the Toreros pull off the upset — SDSU's shot at the title ends.

"That's all the motivation we need," Coach Earl said earlier this week. A San Diego State alum himself, Earl understands better than anyone what's at stake for the Aztecs. "They've got everything to lose. We've got nothing to lose. That's a dangerous combination."

Standing in USD's way is one of the most balanced teams in the Pac-12. Quarterback Jayden Denegal has thrown for 3,546 yards and 28 touchdowns against just three interceptions, but the real damage comes on the ground. Running Back Lucky Sutton has been a workhorse all season, racking up 919 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging a punishing 5.8 yards per carry. His 389 yards after contact will test a USD run defense that has allowed 162.3 yards per game.

Defensively, the Aztecs are relentless. Owen Chambliss leads the nation with 16.5 sacks, while Trey White has added 10 of his own. They'll be hunting USD quarterbacks all afternoon. For a Toreros offense that has struggled to establish any run game (60.2 yards per game), keeping Tyler Olsen upright against that pass rush will be priority number one.

For all the talk of conference titles and spoiler alerts, Saturday also marks the final game for USD's defensive legend. Chase Freeman, the Warwick, Rhode Island native who ranks #1 on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watchlist, will play his last down in a Toreros uniform. His 124 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and unwavering leadership have been the heartbeat of this program through a difficult 1-10 season.

"Chase Freeman is what this program is about," Earl said. "He never quit. Not for one second. I hope this city gives him the sendoff he deserves."

The Toreros enter as massive underdogs. The ratings gap (57 to 74), the record gap (1-10 to 9-2), and the stakes gap all favor the home team. But rivalry games have a funny way of ignoring logic. And for USD, there's no better way to end a brutal season than by ruining their rival's championship dreams.

🔥 WEEK 14: SAN DIEGO TOREROS at #24 SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS

          THIS IS THE ONE!

Coach Earl circled this date the moment he took the job. A San Diego State alum, now leading the crosstown Toreros into Snapdragon Stadium to face his alma mater for CITY SUPREMACY.

But the stakes are even bigger than bragging rights.

The Aztecs are 9-2, ranked #24, and NEED a win over USD + a UCLA loss to USC to reach the PAC-12 Championship Game. The Toreros are 1-10, battered and bruised, riding an 10-game losing streak. USD holds the keys to SDSU's PAC-12 title hopes. One upset, and we get a UCLA vs. USC rematch at SoFi Stadium.

This is for San Diego, some of the top recruits in the county, and bragging rights until 2026.

Re: 🏈 San Diego Toreros: The All-California PAC-12 Experiment

            EA SPORTS™ College Football 26-2026_03_02-22_17_53.png
INAUGURAL FBS SEASON END IN RIVALRY ROUT

SAN DIEGO — The dream upset lasted approximately 10 seconds.

That's how long it took for San Diego State's Nathan Acevedo to field the opening kickoff at his own 9-yard line, find a seam, and race 91 yards untouched into the end zone. The Snapdragon Stadium crowd of 35,000 erupted, and the Toreros' hopes of spoiling their rival's season evaporated before most fans had settled into their seats.

"What happened on the opening kickoff can't happen in a rivalry game," Coach Earl said afterward, his voice flat. "You give a good team momentum, they're going to run with it. We gave them the stadium."

They never stopped running. By the time the first quarter ended, the Aztecs had tacked on two more touchdowns and a field goal, building a 24-0 lead that turned the second half into a formality. The 91-yard return was the first of four first-quarter explosives from an SDSU offense that needed only 26 passing yards to build a three-score advantage.

While the opening kickoff provided the initial jolt, San Diego State quarterback Jayden Denegal made sure the Toreros never recovered. The junior signal-caller completed 16 of 26 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns, with three of those scores going to wide receiver Jacob Bostick.

Bostick, a 6'3" junior from Palatine, Illinois, torched the USD secondary for 61 yards on five catches, finding the end zone from 22 yards out in the first quarter, then adding a 1-yard score and a 21-yard strike in the second. By halftime, the Aztecs led 38-3, and the only remaining drama was whether the Toreros would avoid the shutout.

"I've never seen a team that locked in," Bostick said postgame. "We had something to play for. They knew it. We knew it. From the first whistle, we weren't letting up."

Running back Lucky Sutton delivered the exclamation point in the third quarter, grinding out 105 yards on 18 carries and punching in a 7-yard touchdown to push the lead to 45-3. The Aztecs' workhorse back finished his regular season with 1,024 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, a testament to SDSU's physical identity.

For the Toreros, the offensive highlights were sparse but meaningful. Quarterback Tyler Olsen, playing the final game of his five-year collegiate career, completed 25 of 50 passes for 286 yards and a touchdown. The senior from Scituate, Massachusetts, found Keyonte Tyson for a 4-yard score late in the fourth quarter, a small moment of celebration in an otherwise forgettable evening.

"It wasn't the ending I imagined," Olsen said, his eyes red but his voice steady. "But I wouldn't trade these five years for anything. This program is going to be special. I truly believe that."

Wide receivers Javion Foreman and Demetrius Williamson each hauled in seven catches, combining for 179 yards, while Tyson added 25 receiving yards to go with his touchdown. But the rushing attack, anemic all season, managed just 37 yards on 30 carries — a paltry 1.2 yards per attempt that kept the offense perpetually behind the chains.

If there was a silver lining beyond the final score, it arrived in the form of national recognition for two of the program's defensive pillars. Linebacker Chase Freeman, the Warwick, Rhode Island native who rewrote the school's defensive record book, was named a First Team All-American, the first such honor in USD's brief FBS history. Teammate Taj Coles joined him on the Second Team, a testament to the fight this defense showed all season despite the lopsided results.

"Chase Freeman is what this program is about," Coach Earl said. "He never quit. Not for one second. I hope this city gives him the sendoff he deserves."

Freeman finished his career with 124 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and a place in the program's foundation. As he walked off the Snapdragon field for the final time, he raised a fist to the small section of Toreros fans who made the short trip south.

The scoreboard read 51-13. The season ended 1-11. But for the first time all year, it felt like something was just beginning.

Breaking News: USD Hires New Offensive & Defensive Coordinators!

                OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: JASON CANDLE

Coming off a 1-11 inaugural FBS season, Coach Earl moved quickly to retool his coaching staff, announcing the hiring of Jason Candle as the team's new offensive coordinator. Candle arrives in San Diego with an impressive résumé, bringing a Level 24 Master Motivator archetype and three years remaining on his contract.

"Jason has been a successful head coach and offensive mind at the Group of Five level," Coach Earl said in the press release. "His ability to develop talent and motivate young men is exactly what we need as we transition from Year 1 to Year 2. We've got a young quarterback who needs someone who can build a system around his skill set. Jason is that guy."

Candle, who previously served as the head coach at Toledo, brings extensive experience with the Spread offense — a system that should modernize a Toreros attack that was one-dimensional in 2025, relying almost exclusively on the passing game (312.6 yards per game, 58.3 rushing). His Ohio connections could also help the Toreros expand their recruiting footprint beyond California.

"We're going to be multiple, we're going to be aggressive, and we're going to put our playmakers in position to succeed," Candle said. "The pieces are coming together. I wouldn't have taken this job if I didn't believe in what Coach Earl is building."

                DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: LUKE FICKELL

On the defensive side of the ball, Coach Earl landed a massive hire, bringing in Luke Fickell as the team's new defensive coordinator. Fickell, a Level 45 Program Builder with four years remaining on his contract, brings a wealth of experience and a national championship pedigree to Alcalá Park.

"Luke Fickell is one of the most respected defensive minds in all of football," Coach Earl said. "He's been a head coach at Power Five programs, developed NFL talent, and won at the highest level. For him to want to be part of what we're building here speaks volumes about where this program is headed."

Fickell's defensive philosophy is built on physicality, discipline, and versatility — a perfect fit for the Toreros' 4-2-5 scheme. His arrival should inject life into a unit that ranked among the nation's worst in nearly every category in 2025, allowing 42.8 points per game. While the losses of All-Americans will sting, Fickell's track record of player development could accelerate the growth of young defenders.

"You watch the film from last season, and you see a defense that played hard but didn't always play smart," Fickell said. "We're going to change that. We're going to be physical, we're going to be disciplined, and we're going to attack. The young men in that locker room are hungry. I can't wait to get to work."

Re: 🏈 San Diego Toreros: The All-California PAC-12 Experiment

                      EA SPORTS™ College Football 26-2026_03_04-08_17_45.png
                      📅 SEASON 2 UPDATE: WEEKS 0-1 RESULTS

                      #18 Indiana 37, San Diego 24

The Austin Mack era began with promise but ended in defeat as the San Diego Toreros dropped their season opener 37-24 to the 18th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers at Torero Stadium. Making his debut under center, the 6'6" transfer quarterback showed flashes of the franchise-level talent that made him the crown jewel of Coach Earl's transfer haul, but the offense struggled to find consistency against a relentless Hoosiers defense. Despite the loss, the Toreros outgained Indiana through much of the contest and showed significant improvement from their 1-11 campaign just one year ago.

The story of the game, however, was the Toreros' defense — specifically sophomore linebacker Donte Dennis. The 4-star recruit from Los Angeles announced his arrival on the national stage with a dominant performance, racking up 11 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups against a top-20 opponent. His efforts earned him Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating evening. While the offense adjusts to life under a new quarterback and the rebuilt offensive line finds its footing, Dennis proved that the Toreros' defensive future is in excellent hands. The Toreros now turn their attention to Sam Houston in Week 1, looking to even their record before a brutal Week 2 matchup against #22 Maryland.

                      📋 GAME NOTES
                      • Austin Mack threw for 372 yards and 2 touchdowns in his USD debut
                      • The Toreros were shut out in the first half but exploded for 21 fourth-quarter points
                      • Donte Dennis led the defense with 11 tackles, earning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week
                      • USD actually outgained Indiana 628 to 595 in total offense
                      • The Toreros committed zero turnovers against a top-20 opponent
San Diego 27, Sam Houston 20

One week after a heartbreaking loss to #18 Indiana, the San Diego Toreros bounced back in emphatic fashion, defeating Sam Houston 27-20 behind one of the most dominant defensive performances in program history. Linebacker Jaquez Blanks delivered a performance for the ages, racking up 11 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, an interception, and a 32-yard pick-six that sealed the victory in the fourth quarter. He was named National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. He wasn't alone in the onslaught — defensive tackle Eric Landry added 11 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks, while the defense as a unit recorded an astounding 16 tackles for loss and 8 sacks, completely overwhelming the Bearkats' offense.

The offense did just enough to support the defensive masterpiece, with quarterback Austin Mack throwing for 364 yards and Spencer Strickland adding 66 rushing yards. Trailing 20-13 in the fourth quarter, the Toreros rallied behind their defense's momentum, eventually taking the lead for good on Blanks' game-clinching pick-six. The win moves USD to 1-1 on the season and sets up a massive Week 2 showdown against #22 Maryland at Torero Stadium. With a national defensive player of the week leading the charge and an offense finding its rhythm, the Toreros have proven they can compete with anyone on their schedule.

                      📋 GAME NOTES
                      • Jaquez Blanks delivered arguably the greatest individual defensive performance in USD history
                      • The defense recorded 16 tackles for loss and 8 sacks as a unit
                      • Eric Landry was dominant with 11 tackles, 7 TFL, and 3.5 sacks
                      • The Toreros overcame a 20-13 deficit in the fourth quarter
                      • Blanks' 32-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed the victory
                      • USD improves to 1-1 on the season heading into Week 2 vs #22 Maryland

Re: 🏈 San Diego Toreros: The All-California PAC-12 Experiment

Year 2 is officially underway, and the San Diego Toreros look like a completely different program! After fighting off Sam Houston for our first win of the season, Coach Earl and the Toreros welcome the #23 ranked Maryland Terrapins to Torero Stadium.

Can our new 4-star franchise QB Austin Mack orchestrate a massive Top-25 upset? Can Defensive Coordinator Luke Fickell's newly rebuilt defense contain a high-powered Big Ten offense? It is time to put the nation on notice.

                        📊 RECAP SO FAR:

Re: 🏈 San Diego Toreros: The All-California PAC-12 Experiment

                          BACK FROM THE BYE!

After a tough 24-44 loss to No. 22 Maryland, the Toreros had a week to regroup, heal up, and prepare for the next challenge. Now they return to Torero Stadium to face a dangerous James Madison squad.

Austin Mack and the offense are looking to bounce back after throwing for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Terrapins. The defense, led by National Player of the Week Jaquez Blanks, needs to contain a Dukes offense that features explosive players.

Can the Toreros get back in the win column? Or does James Madison spoil the party?

BACK HOME AFTER A TOUGH LOSS

The Toreros dropped a heartbreaker to James Madison in Week 4, falling 28-27 in a game that came down to the final minutes. Now they return to Torero Stadium looking to get back on track against a Syracuse Orange team that features former standout RB Keontae Tyson, returning home after transferring during the off-season.

Austin Mack and the offense have been rolling through the air all season, but the run game needs to step up. The defense, led by National Player of the Week winner Jaquez Blanks and dominant true freshman tackle Eric Landry, needs to contain a Syracuse offense that's looking to play spoiler.

Can the Toreros get back in the win column before a brutal stretch of PAC-12 games? Or does Syracuse hand USD their third straight loss?
