Kill's Debut Spoiled in 4th Quarter

Elison(#40) trots into the endzone to re-take the lead over the Gophers, and was the start of the end for the Gophers.

Going into this game, Coach Kill knew his players weren't as talented as USC, but he knew that if they played hard, they could give USC a run for their money. The Gophers did just that when they were up over USC after the first half of play in the 2011 season 10-7. The Trojans found themselves down 17-14, but after Barkley connected with Elison for a score, it was all over for the Gophers and their defense. The defense had played well up until the 4th quarter in which they gave up 28 points. Coach Kill said he was impressed with the guys' effort, but not everyone was in it for the whole game. Marc Tyler ate up the Gophers defense in the 2nd half and ended the game with 18 carries for 200 yards with 2 touchdowns. He was held in check for the majority of the 1st half, but it eventually came burning down after the Gophers' defense came to a screeching halt in the 4th quarter.

Early on in the 1st quarter, starter MarQueis Gray was injured and back-up Moses Alipate came in. Alipate did his best, but most of the offensive load was put on the shoulders of Duane Bennett who ended up with 27 carries for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was a good day for Bennett, but Bennett was not very pleased with the result of the game. Alipate was not very accurate going 10-34 for 175 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. The Gophers fully expect Gray to be able to start next week's game against New Mexico State at home. The real star on defense was Kyle Henderson who had 2 interceptions. It was a sloppy game, but the Gophers looked pretty good until the 4th quarter. This is something they can hopefully build upon and the rest of the non-conference schedule should be less grueling, but not winning at USC was to be expected.

The Gophers have New Mexico State next week and hope to get their first win for Coach Kill. It should be an interesting one.
