This would be where the idea that NFLPA and EA essentially struck a deal and help prevent 2K moving forward with their plans.

    - From the article on ESPN -

The deal has been terrific for Electronic Arts, which not only got the rights to the best players in football history at an apparent discount but also essentially eliminated its competition. Walker claimed in his February 2007 e-mail: "EA owes me a huge favor because that threat [of no longer being able to use Hall of Famers] was enough to persuade Take Two to back off its plans, leaving EA as the only professional football video game manufacturer out there.”

There is also this article too.

Emphasis mine. "Prevent" is your words, not theirs. Sounds like 2K could have moved forward with APF 2K9 if they really wanted to.

I can immediately understand, however, how the inclusion of the entire Pro Football Hall of Fame in Madden 08 / 09 / onward would have obviously undercut the main thrust of a title focused on football legends, and thus why - between that and the game's middling critical reception and abysmal sales numbers for a Gen-3 boxed release - Take 2 would have made a market decision to pull the plug on APF.

Either way, you got your citation. It was no "conspiracy theory". You were wrong. Accept that and go on about your day, thanks.

Right, clearly EA wants (or wanted) the market to themselves (which is sound business) scooping up the NCAA, arena football licenses & acquiring exclusive use of HOF players. Like Marino, Montana, Elway, Sanders, Rice, etc that all played a part in the marketing and advertising of the title.

People attempting to excuse the tactics aren't needed. They did it to remove their last "viable" opposition from the market. We also understand that the low sales figures and "meh" critical reception played a part in the series not going forward.

This was my thought as well back in 2008. While it was kind of neat seeing some legends from my childhood in the game, I've never been able to get into games with historical figures from different eras. I would have preferred they saved the money and spent the time making it super customizable. It would never have been a huge seller, but with no licensing fees, it could have been profitable.

Re: The NFL and 2K Are Back Together, 'Non-Simulation' Games Will Release Beginning i

OH MY GOODNESS!! Im a long long time OS Forumer from 2002 or something like that so my daily dose of OS Forums are not as frequent as use to be ..so i just now got to see this news.... I LITERALLY FELL OFF MY CHAIR! im not kidding ...i fell half way to the floor reading this just now. I can't believe it...I am so F'n stoked to see 2K Sports getting a shot at the NFL again.

I dont care about non-simulation agreement...that will swiftly change once the NFL see's what 2K Sports can do with NFL Football like they once did and been doing with the NBA License. Once they see the quality of their efforts and skills at making a fun exciting arcade-type Football game...the NFL will be all over 2K sports begging them to do a Sim-Style NFL Game...I have no doubt in my mind.

In fact, something smells fishy with this non-simulation deal for 2021 which is right when EA's Deal with the NFL ends..I have a gut feeling, like the article said that we will see a real Sim Style NFL2K game going head on with Madden in a few years from now.

I can wait, i can be patient for another few years if this gives 2K the time to get re-acquainted in NFL 2k development with these new next gen consoles. I'd much rather be patient for a few years then get some lackluster hurried NFL 2K sim-style football game. This news will satisfiy me until then!!

Man...I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy. I still have hope for Madden but there are just some things they (the developers) do not get in whats required to make their game that fun and exciting experience that NFL 2K developers do understand and know these little ingredients that make playing a NFL Football videogame fun and exciting. ...Here's one tiny example... with NFL 2K games running the football requires the user to quickly tap the button to break tackles...that one little tiny feature was one of the reasons why running the football in NFL2k was so fun and exciting..it made you feel like you physically were on the field fighting for yards....yet Madden dev's refuse to see this as something important..they won't eve add it in as a "OPTION" to toggle on or off..I know, i spoke with two different Madden developers about this some years ago and recently like two years ago...Nope, Nodda, No Go...they brushed that aside as unwanted....I say, says who??? NFL 2k Gamers loved that aspect of NFL 2K...not everyone but most did.

Anyways... LETS GO!!!!! LETS GO NFL 2K!!
..You win some, you lose some

With the report of NFL officially extending the EA deal, I hope whatever 2k is cooking up can at least provide a quality football game. If it can have good gameplay and an immersive franchise, then I'll support whatever 2k does.

Just give me what you did in All Pro Football. I went back and played some this week and it’s insane how you have to BUILD A TEAM. My first team was defensive line heavy. Had Reggie White, The Fridge, Dexter Manly and someone else. The team dominated teams that had no stars on their line, the next weak we would play a team with gold stars at Tackle and my ends would have to work harder but my tackles still did great.

That’s not offered anywhere in the current gen market. There’s no team/roster building that isn’t some type of ultimate team card building mode.

Last team I created, I went with the balanced approach. I focused on defense primarily. Its huge in this game if you can win the LOS battle and contain the pass game. I was willing to sacrifice run defense to be able rush the passer and have Coverage Specialist CBs on the outside. Then offense, all I needed was a gold QB and any star WR with Route God and Soft Hands.

I would definitely take APF approach. Just leave out the legends. I would take fictional players. Just expand to some type of immersive franchise mode. That type of roster building shouldn't be considered "simulation". I feel gameplay is too subjective to consider simulation or non-simulation.

They have the NFLPA license. So how would you guys feel about 2k taking the same approach with APF but with NFL players. So it could have the same roster construction(obviously expanded and improved) but using NFL Players. So they could have NFL players in star tiers, and you create teams like you would in APF2k8. So for example, Pat Mahomes and Aaron Donald as Gold Players, Keenan Allen-Jaire Alexander-Trent Williams as Silver players, then your Bronze players. That way you still get the added marketability of having star players but taking a non-simulation approach. If they could find a way to have an immersive franchise mode, then that would sell

Appealing to the social aspects of modern games (with a MyTeam & Park/MyCareer) would also be huge.

Having those legends or recently retired greats as an option (would be awesome to build an "all-time" Bills team) would also help in that aspect.

And although they are still growing and building brand awareness, the SFL (Simulation Football League) could hopefully have some positive effects on their design choices.

Fingers crossed we get an experience beyond just a mobile ("simulation" CPU-vs-CPU) title and 'NFL Playgrounds.'

If I had to think of a primarily casual approached game, then I would think it would centered around a NFL MyPark theme with NFL Street-Like gameplay. I would imagine being able to create your own players using your NIL, and a heavy emphasis on online play. I'm trying to think of way creating a MyCareer centered around a Non-Simulation game. Maybe similar to NBA Live's The One mode street section. Where you have some backstory, but most if not all gameplay is played in Parks.

But like you said, I just hope it isn't just a mobile game or NFL Playgrounds. I'm not into Mobile games at all(don't have any games on my phone). NFL Playgrounds would be a "family-fun" game. But those games don't have much replay value after a month. If it has to arcade-style, then give me Super Mega Baseball or NFL Street

Exactly. APF 28K did not finish what they started. Why give up after one edition, for crying out loud. I would hope that 2K has secretly kicks themselves for not developing this game into their bell cow.

Unfortunately, without the NFL or NFLPA license, needed removal of many legends (NFLPA Hall of Fame agreement) & the overall shallowness of the game the higher ups at Take-Two likely felt it wasn't feasible long-term.

We need to remember that Take-Two was in a very different place financially back in 2007/2008 compared to now. Of course, the flip side is that game development has only increased and the better/more marketable "sim" license is still not available.

Hopefully, with the NFL branding, a likely bigger pool of "alumni"/legends & a deeper experience in mind they can revisit the concept. Especially, when that concept (which predates MUT & MyTeam) is the main seller of games and (sadly) microtransactions.
