That's how I feel about it too. The Wild have had to make the asinine Canada/West Coast road swings a few times a year since their inception. Also, what's so hard about spending a few hours on a nice direct flight on the team charter? These guys aren't flying coach. They'll survive.

Re: The realignment cometh
Kind of bummed that the Predators got stuck in one of the 8-team divisions.
Can we just contract Phoenix and Columbus to make all the divisions even with 7 teams a piece? Both franchises have been drawing 60%-70% attendance since the lockout.Comment

Re: The realignment cometh
agreed. they do need to retract 2 teams. but with this new format, it looks like they may want to expand by 2 instead.
the league is watered down already, gonna get worse if they add 2 more teams obviously.Twitch

Re: The realignment cometh
I like the new alignments because of the playoffs matchups it'll bring. I think it's awesome we could see Flyers v. Bruins in the Finals, or Flyers v. Red Wings in the Conference Finals. Tons of interesting possibilities. I'm just glad to see they went so radical instead of moving just one team.
There was no way to satisfy everyone. This way, there's change for all. Everyone has to compromise.
Florida and Tampa Bay are kind of beat being in essentially the Northwest, but oh well.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Oh really?
You need to get your fact straight. Columbus has never fallen below 83%. Not to mention for about 7 out of 11 years they have 90% + for a really ****ty team.

Re: The realignment cometh
Meh. That's cancelled out by the fact that travel in the West is greatly decreased in the first two playoff rounds. Vancouver crisscrossed 2 time zones numerous times against Chicago and Nashville last year. Detroit always seems to be playing California teams in the first two rounds. The new format just means that the Eastern teams might have to travel more in the third round. Boo hoo.
I like the new conference alignments. In general, looking at things as a whole, it makes more sense to me than the current system. Obviously, I'm biased because I'm a Red Wings fan and this means much less travel for us (although now that I live 1500 miles away I sorta got to like them traveling so much!), I feel like keeping some semblance of geographic parity is fair. As the doc said, I don't care that the Eastern teams may have to travel more in the 3rd round; as we soon-to-be-ex-Western Conference denizens can attest, I call that making it even.
Anyway, it's time for something like this; have they announced names? I suppose it's too much to ask to go back to Norris, Campbell, etc...maybe West, East, Midwest, and Southeast? Although I guess that doesn't exactly work geographically...Comment

Phoenix is likely next on the chopping block. We've all seen this coming for a while now.
Florida would be my number three team to axe/relocate, but they are in an East division, so it wouldn't do any good as far as balancing the divisions out.
The Islanders aren't going away because of their history (4 cups in the 80s). Probably the same for Colorado (2 cups, 8 division championships), even though their history is a bit shorter.
That leaves either Dallas or Columbus as Western teams, and of those, Dallas has the better history (1 cup, 7 division championships).Last edited by jyoung; 12-06-2011, 03:13 PM.Comment

Re: The realignment cometh
It's not just the travel, either. Local TV ratings for Detroit, Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota, etc. should get a boost with far fewer road games starting at 9:30 or 10:30 local time.I like the new conference alignments. Just so you know, the "re-seed after 2nd round" part of the playoff format hasn't been approved yet, though it sounds like this is the outcome that Bettman prefers.
Not yet. They'll likely use West (or Pacific), Central, East, Atlantic. Rather than go back to the Smythe, Norris, Adams, Patrick days, I think it'd be nice to go with Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Lemieux.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The realignment cometh
Dallas just got new ownership. Columbus and Florida have long-term stadium leases which would have to be broken at great expense. Other than Phoenix, the only realistic relocation within the next decade involves the Islanders after the 2014-15 season. They might be able to maintain their identity by moving to another part of Gotham (Queens, Brooklyn), but they ain't staying where they are now. Unless league revenues go into total freefall (ie, the American economy goes even further south, and the loonie drops back down to 65 cents US), contraction just is not going to happen.Atlanta's already been relocated.

Re: The realignment cometh
Yes, and the article I read last night (don't remember which one it was) says that it's going to be up to the GM's? Is that accurate?
Also, I love seeing some of these Eastern guys huffing and puffing that Crosby and Ovie are not both able to pass the 2nd round.

Re: The realignment cometh
As a fan of hockey that doesn't watch the Stars much because of the old west coast swing, this is great news. Instead of having nearly have of the division on Pacific time, we now have a Central Time Zone team with the occasional play on the coast. Once Hicks gets the boot (the Rangers had the same attendance problem while he was in his last days of ownership there), the Stars have a good chance to go back on top again.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Looks like they'll still have to go a long way. Not as long of a way but still,a long way. They should swap with Phoenix.Comment

Re: The realignment cometh
How in the world does that make sense? Look at the map again and reconsider that notion. Their longest trip is to Dallas in the new alignment. Now you want to give them that same trip mile-wise for 3 conference opponents that are 2 time zones over? And take Phoenix away from close proximity of 3 conference opponents?Last edited by ImTellinTim; 12-06-2011, 04:57 PM.Comment
