    Context matters there.
It was near the end of the PS3/XB360 run and it had become a bit stale overall (I think). Also, as much as I love the content on TW14, I sort of preferred the look and lighting and few details in the previous 2 versions.

TW14 is actually sort of a cautionary tale for 2k23 if they aren't aggressive enough with keeping it moving forward and looking better and really being "revolutionary" at some point.

As you say -- what have you done for me lately -- that could bite 2K if they are too conservative here. I hope they pull out the big dog and let it eat!

I agree with the lighting thing. TW13 looks more vibrant to me. I actually prefer that look over 14s dark colors.

True...Tiger Woods 12, the first EA game with Augusta, sold 1.7 million across PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

So that means that within basically two years of Augusta being in an EA golf video game, the interest of that course dropped from 1.7 million in sales to 400K. So it will get your foot in the door, but you have to find other ways to stay inside. That's what I am interested in...how will EA get people to hang around after the allure of Augusta wears off, like it did between TW 12-14.

We should be asking that question about 2k - right now!

What are they going to do with 2k23 to even remotely come close to the black swan event of 2k21 and pandemic and being the only game going, etc, etc

If they think they can roll out an incremental update with Tiger and just "do it again" (on the huge sales), I think they have another thing coming.

I don’t believe EA PGA will be annual release.

But you do bring up a great question.

If 2K23 isn’t a huge upgrade I don’t see it getting close to 2K21 sales.

Of course...every game needs to innovate or die. 2K right now has Tiger as a new wrinkle to the landscape. But yeah, they are horrible at sharing info and we have no clue what else they're adding. In EA's defense, they at least have some info out about their PGA Tour game...so they are ahead of 2K in that department, for sure.

They will likely not sell 2.5 million copies of 2K23. But they also have the large player base that did buy 2K21 and made it a hit. They also have the course creator, which means lots of content. Throw in TW, and things get interesting. But as far as new info? 2K has shared nothing, and can't get complacent with EA coming down the tracks.

                Agree with all that..

I mean, I could honestly make a good case that a lot of pressure is on 2K right now to have a follow up that is worthy -- particularly with the old stalwart coming back into the mix and swinging heavy on the licensing..

Whatever they do -- they really need to get it out this year at some point I think.

My dream 2K23 game would be a reveal that the game was on a brand new engine.

Start the trailer showing beautiful courses, then cut to a life like Tiger Woods making a clutch putt with the crowd growing wild(Think 2008 US Open) , then wow everyone by showing the course he was playing at was made by the player in the all new Tiger course creator. That would Wow many.

That would have me just as excited for PGA2K23 as I am for EA pga 23.

                    Me too!
                    So much me too!

I will immediately be a bit deflated if 2k23 looks "basically the same".

I know that's not a thing for everyone, but I've just mentally gotten myself ready for "even better Rory graphics" and in 2023 and beyond, that's really where I want to golf (super modern and beautiful environments)

I’ll say it…. AUGUSTA sales. 🤣 I think TW12 had a lot of interest simply because it was the first with Augusta , and I think EA is trying to replicate that excitement.
It's not as simple as that, not even close. If a gamer is only interested to play golf games, he has to buy a $500 new gen console, and that's if they're available at that price, to play the new EA golf game. It will not be the case at all to play the new 2K/HB game, which probably still have a few very good replicas of Augusta. This will be the big choice. PS3/XBox 360 consoles had been out for years when TW12 came out, most gamers already had them.

Yes, but for other gamers, especially 9-10 months from now, they might very well be interested in upgrading to current gen consoles (if they haven't already).

Access to last gen console customers is always a game of diminishing returns over time.
Today it's great -- tomorrow less so -- next year even less so.

None that they'll be able to advertise though

Not everyone likes playing whack a mole to find the latest "hidden" third party attempts at real courses that may exist out there.

For normal gaming folks, it tends to be a bit of a non-starter

Also, one never knows if they'll start getting even more serious about locking that stuff out. The more they try to cooperate with licensed sources, the higher the pressure becomes to police their own servers for IP infringement.

This is why the timing of the 2K release will matter so much in regards to the next-gen-only release for EA.

If 2K's game is still an August release and comes out on all available consoles, that's just 3 months from now, and 7-8 months before EA's game releases only on PS5/XB Series X/S. Anyone who wants golf on any available system can get it right then, right there.

The next-gen console situation might be improved by Spring 2023, but it is probably going to be a major issue just a couple months from now. So those still on last-gen consoles will have gotten their golf fix via 2K's game in August, and how much will they be willing to lock in on a new console to get just another golf game in a few months...if they even can?

Most discussion about 2K happens at the TGC Tours forums. I don't know how many people from there post here, but I am on the TGCT site quite a bit.

2K's very own forums are horrible. HB's forums were OK, but eventually became filled with only the guys who were too diehard about their game and any criticism there caused you to get chased right out of there...not surprised to hear it's a desolate wasteland. Haven't been over there in a very long time.
