Well to throw this out there because I'm upset ... I just got a new 360 and exchanged my broke down one. I got standard cords and gave them my high-def cords. Called and asked if I could bring those cords in and get my old ones, and the answer I got was no. Guess I won't be doing business with them anymore.
After more than eight years on here, I finally figured out how to edit my time zone!

The 360 by itself does not upconvert regular DVD's over component connection. The only way for the DVD to be upconverted is through VGA or the HD Drive via VGA (Component will not upconvert).

I bought a no name VGA cable off ebay for $11 and I am still amazed at how much more detailed the games are (especially GOW) compared to component. I have a Westy 37W3.

That's not true. I used to upconvert DVDs on my 360 with the MS VGA cable. I don't have the HD Drive.

            I corrected it.

IMO the best hookup is VGA, well for my tv anyways (Samsung 5088)

Re: Best cords for HDTV xbox 360 hookup?

I've gone back and forth with my new TV (Mits WD-57831) and have settled on component. While VGA offers 1080p, the video levels on my TV are all out of whack and the grayscale is too blue...even with calibration (sure I can skew it in the service menu but then it's off for the other inputs).

I've heard rumblings of a fix in the Spring update, making the VGA output to video levels and not PC levels, but it remains to be seen. The downside of component, IMO, is the VERY bold and bright colors, even with calibration.
