Was MS smarter by not having as many exclusives and relying on 3rd party than us as gamers gave them credit for?

Sony has the better first party lineup, as they also have more of them. We saw a very high profile 1st party title in Resistance 3 absolutely bomb. But Sony also has Killzone 3 and Socom, which are similar titles no matter how you shake it up. Sony also has Uncharted 3 coming this fall, so did having those 2 huge titles kill any R3 momentum and sales?

Does Sony having so many high profile first party games hurt them in the long run, as they end up comepting against themselves and 3rd party.

I don't know the answer, we can only go off sales.

We know MS only has Halo, Gears, Forza and the Kinect stuff really. I could be missing something maybe, not sure, but either way all of MS' exclusive big name titles have sold a lot. Where Sony seems to be hit and miss. It's not a quality thing, as Resistance 3 was loved by critics and the gamers on OS, everyone I talked to said how good it was.

So why didn't it sell? And will this contribute to Sony's strategy on the next system? The not having a first party sans a couple games worked wonders for MS this gen, could backfire next gen. No one really knows. Just found it an interesting discussion and kinda fits in this topic.
I think Sony made one mistake in 2011 and that was bombard the market with so many exclusives month after month. We had Little Big Planet 2 in Jan, Killzone 3 in Feb, Socom 4 in April, Motorstorm in May, Infamous 2 in June, Resistance 3 in Sept, Ratchet & Clank in Oct, and Uncharted 3 in Nov. Where does that leave 2012 if you ask me? Right now all we know about is Starhawk, DUST 514, and Twisted Metal. I just feel like there wasn't enough breathing room between most of these titles.

All the titles sold well this year, except for Resistance 3. R3 should have been a title releasing in Jan or Feb 2012 giving the fall to Ratchet 4 and Uncharted 3. One reason why R3 bombed imo is that it released between Deus EX/Madden 12 and then same day as Dead Island and the month of Gears......maybe add the death of Nathan Hale in part 2 and that got some upset.

Just one quick question, how is Socom and Killzone the same when one is TPS and the other is FPS? LOL! Yes, both are shooters.....but 2 different games imo.

I think what will make or break these systems next go around is price, launch time frame, and if their eco-system carries over to the next console. Imagine buying a PS4 and not having your trophies carry over! Imagine buying a 360 and none of your XBLA games don't carry over! Now that would piss me off to no extent.

Considering that PSN games, etc (you now have purchased) will carry over with the Vita, it is safe to assume, seemingly, that all that will carry over with the next consoles.

They would crucify themselves if either company did not follow suit. I think they understand this. Especially when their whole push now is focused on digital content.

        Agree with all of that.

I lumped Killzone 3, Socom 4, and Resistance 3 all together because that's 3 first party shooters released in a 7 month period by one publisher. Two are FPS and one is a TPS, which is correct, but still, all 3 are shooters in a short period.

MS usually puts out Halo one year, Gears the next. The Halo CE is different as it's an HD remake.

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?

Almost seems, damned if you do, and damned if you don't with the two strategies.

Also I wonder how this X-mas will fair. With so many titles out, people could be just holding off for then, price drops, etc after they get their one or two they really are holding out for.

Not to mention, this season is probably[arguably] one of the most highly competitive for software on all systems ever.

Gears 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, MW3, BF3, ES:Skyrim, Batman, Forza 4, Dark Souls, AC: Revelations, etc, etc.

I do think there is a such thing as too much of a good thing. I have been holding out on a lot of titles, due to the fact it was so much at once. So saturated, I have had no time to complete what I got, so I pick up later on. With very few exceptions (GoW3, Uncharted 3, etc being day one regardless)... but games like Killzone 3, etc I held off on. And I benefited by recently getting KZ3 Helghast brand new from Amazon for $42.

By the time I pick up R3 it will be bones cheap as well. I still have to get LA Noire, just got Mafia 2 with all the add ons brand new for $12, have to get Infamous 2, and there is a whole slew of new games like Skyrim, BF3, etc.

Too much so soon, with a lot of people having less time in today's economy.

And I am heading out right now to pick up Ico/SotC ... FM(video gaming)L

Yes, totally agree. 3rd parties are on fire, first party is on fire. Gaming wise, it's a very hot fall.

I see where you are coming from about releasing 3 exclusive shooters in a 7 month period begins to segment your market, especially when all of three of them also focus on multi-player. What happens is the Killzone community could start dying down by the time R3 comes out if those fans have moved on.

You're missing Fable, but that series seems to be going in a bad direction with that Kinect game.

I think Molyneux's way over-hyping every single version is what sets it in the bad direction.

That is what I'm doing. Too many games in a short time period. I'm waiting to get most of them cheaper(R3, Gears 3, Ratchet 4) because I know I wouldnt be able to play them much now, so might as well wait and get them when they are 20 dollars cheaper around black friday.

I had problems because I was a PC RPG player, so the game felt way to childish as far ad mechanics and simplicity. Did not feel very RPG.

And he would hype them as G-d's gift to gaming, then you get it, and you are like, a flash game in 3D skin? Not that simplistic, but in comparative from what I was used to in RPG gaming.

Yeah, I never thought of it as high level western rpg style. It was a game I played for the world, and the writing because the series was never difficult, and the story lack luster.

Not to Hijack things but after playing Witcher 2 on PC, all I could think of was how nothing this generation of consoles even comes close.

The Bethesda RPGs are great but they are almost a sub genre.

A little late to the party, but to me and my friends Party Chat is HUGE. There are many times we get on and only sit in the dashboard and talk in the party chat for long periods of time. Also, a few of us will turn our 360's on and if none of our "main" friends(the ones we really only play withe very time) we'll turn it right back off.

If there is no one online that I feel like getting in a party chat with, then I don't play any games at all. My friends are just like that.

I realize we might be in the minority, but you know there have to be more of us out there.
