Re: Studio 60: On the Sunset Strip

I think networks are more willing to give more time to struggling shows they see as top-quality. Just look at "My Name Is Earl" and "The Office," both of which struggled early last year on NBC before hitting their ratings stride, especially "The Office."

NBC gave my favorite show of all time -- "Homicide: Life on the Streets" -- probably two extra seasons just because it was such high-quality drama. But, much like "Sunset Strip," it was too well done for most American TV watchers, especially for the 1990s.

It seems like there's been more quality TV in the last couple of years than I can remember in the last 10 or 15 years. I think the critical and public success of the weekly dramas on premium pay TV -- HBO, Showtime -- have really forced the networks to demand better-quality shows. Good for us viewers!

    Take care,

I tried again last night to watch it and fell asleep again.I don't know it just doesn't seem to hold my interest.

The only new show so far that I have liked is Jericho.I think THE NINE will be the best new drama of the season.

I enjoyed it, as always...still not sure if mainstream America will get hooked though

Yes i realize ads are what make the money, and people who record the shows are more likely to fast forward thru them...but do you think that is taken into account at all?
Somewhat. I know NBC gave "American Dreams" a season more because the executives thought it was a great show for families to watch on Sunday, but it ulimately bit the dust too.

Agree completely. This show is "one and done" unless NBC sticks with it for a longer haul.

I just can't see mainstream America "getting" this show. It's too inside, too fast-paced, with too many things written into the dialogue that don't hit you immediately. People tolerated that in "The West Wing" because that show gave Americans a glimpse inside of something that interested them, the Oval Office. I just don't think that many people are that interested in the inner workings of a late-night TV comedy show. It would be one thing if this show was done at the peak of "Saturday Night Live's" popularity, but it's not.

So given that I think too few people care about the inner sanctum of Hollywood production, this show needs to dive into more human relationships outside of the show to succeed. It's only week three, and I'd like to see more than just the set of the show and the interpersonal relationships while everyone is working. Don't abandon that, as it's the heart of the show, but do these people exist outside of the studio? I know they put in ridiculous hours, but ...

I'm still enjoying the show quite a bit. It's so well written and acted. But sadly I just can't see it lasting longer than a season, ratings-wise, without NBC's blessing.

              Take care,
              PK

How is this show doing viewship ratings-wise? I enjoy this show, along with Heroes, Shark, and The Nine. Where can we go to check the viewship ratings?

Re: Studio 60: On the Sunset Strip

It's official: This show jumped the shark for me tonight. I'm not watching it anymore.

"Studio 60" had so much promise with its pilot, as the writing was good and the acting fine. But NOTHING has happened in the following episodes. There's been no character development other than the lame tension between Harriet and Matt.

Otherwise, we've seen four straight weeks of a TV show about the making of a TV show. Is this a documentary or a drama-comedy? I'm not sure.

And do these people ever leave the studio? People who work all the time lead very boring lives, and this has become a very boring show. I tolerated the first two episodes because the script was so well done and the acting so sharp. But that can only carry a show so long, and this show has zero momentum.

I really think Sorkin's ego has taken over "Studio 60." It's more of a vehicle for him to say: "Hey, even though I got nailed for coke while doing 'The West Wing,' I'm back now. Look at me and the snappy dialogue I can still write!"

Problem is, Aaron, you have to mate that dialogue to a show with characters you can care about and who have interesting lives. Neither is the case with "Studio 60."

                        Take care,
                        PK

I thought it was a very good show last night. They showcased musicians from New Orleans on the show. I really hope this show survives, its smart and funny. I don't want another cop/law show, I enjoy this one.
