Re: Greatest Speech in History
Several speeches jump to mind immediately for me.
As PK said the three Gold Standard speeches are MLK, Lincoln and Churchill's speeches that he mentioned. You just can't top those.
Other great speeches in my mind are:
- FDR's 1934 inaugural "There's nothing to fear but fear itself"
- FDR's "I hate War" speech (I believe in 1940?)
- Not necessarily the whole speech but a quote from Tommy Douglas that really touches me:
"Man can now fly in the air like a bird, swim under the ocean like a fish, he can burrow into the ground like a mole. Now if only he could walk the earth like a man, this would be paradise."
As for more recent day speeches, there hasn't been one that has had truly great impact just yet but I truly love Barack Obama's speech at the '04 DNC. It was his coming out party and I believe Obama has a great future. (altho the talk of him running for Prez in '08 seems a bit premature for my tastes)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

While it might not be the greatest or whatever one ive always liked was W's speech he gave at the WTC with the firefighter when people were shouting about how they couldnt hear him and he said "I can hear you and soon the people who did this will hear all of us."Member of the OS Rams ClubComment

Re: Greatest Speech in History
More great speeches just came to mind:
- Barry Goldwater's acceptance speech at the 1964 RNC. This is the speech that contains the famous quote:
“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”
The last part of that quotation almost always gets left out when people talk about him. Anywho this speech and later the '64 Presidential race gave birth to the Modern Conservative Movement.
- LBJ's "Great Society" speech at the Johns Hopkins University in I belive 1965.
- Nixon's "Checkers" Speech in '56
- Chamberlain's "peace in our time" statement/speech after the Nuremburg Agreement with HitlerMember of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Greatest Speech in History
Care to elaborate? If it's too political then just PM me your answer.
I think he's very charismastic and as that speech proved (to me at least) he knew how to invoke the early '60s idealism while still being very modern. I love the portion of the speech about the Red States and Blue States.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
