Any good free SMTP server? (Mac, if it matters)

I use my lap top from home and soak up the wireless from my neighbor across the street (ZERO password protection... in all honesty, I'm not even sure whose it is). I use Mozilla Thunderbird for my Emailing purposes, and I cant send emails because I do not have the SMTP set.

I tried using a program called RapidoSMTP by App4Mac, but I could not get it to work. When I would send emails, it said they were sent, but they were not getting to the recipient (I tested this with my hotmail email address).

Does hotmail have an SMTP that I can use? I can just switch up the return address, I think.

Or is there another site I can use easily or a program I can download?
