What are your top 5 movies as far as when talking to your buddies you say, "Man, you have GOT to watch this movie."

Be it for humor, scares, drama, etc. What are your top 5 flicks that you think everyone should see at least once.

I have a ton, but I'm gonna go with some that may be less familiar to folks.

Mine....


1. Grosse Pointe Blank- John Cusack is a professional hitman who goes back to his 10 year high school reunion and sees the girlfriend he left his senior year. GREAT GREAT flick, tons of humor, action and yes....John Cusack rules all.

2. The Big Lebowski- When I saw this at the movies, I thought it was ok. When I got it on DVD, the more I watched it, the more I fell in love with it. One of the most quotable movies ever. "You want a toe? I can get you a toe dude. I can get you a toe by noon..with nail polish!"

3. Fargo-Brilliant movie. Flat out great cast. William H. Macy is stellar in this and it has the perfect mix of dark humor and drama.

4. Raising Arizona- tied for the funniest movie of all time with....

5. Office Space-THE MOST QUOTABLE MOVIE EVER MADE. Instant classic. A laugh in every scene.

1. Die Hard- First movie in which I was introduced to Bruce Willis. Die Hard is by far and away my favorite film ever made. It has everything you want in a film. Action, Comedy, great cast, great plot, etc.. The tension between Alan Rickman and Bruce Willis' characters was absolutely amazing. I could watch this film all day, everyday.

2. Garden State- I came into this film not expecting much. I left the film blown away. I may be a little biased here because I am a huge fan of Zach Braff, but I still thought the film was excellent. Such a brilliant film, especially considering it was Zach's first attempt at Directing.

3. Transformers- An absolute action fest, thrill of a movie. Shia LeBeouf did an absolutely fantastic job in this film. He played his role to perfection. There really isn't much to complain with about this film. Maybe too much Anthony Anderson, but that doesn't take away from the films greatness.

4. Inside Man- This film was a masterpiece. I am a fan of "intelligent" films, and this was definitely one of them. The way it was thrown together was amazing. There were twists and turns all throughout the movie, and it kept you on your toes throughout. I am huge fan of "cop and robber" type films, and this one is one of my favorites(behind the Die Hard trilogy).

5. Lord of the Rings Trilogy- I'm not a big "fantasy" film fan. However, these films were absolutely amazing. It was just an overall great experience watching them. I never read the books, so the movie was new to me. Just some really cool movies to watch.

Garden State isn't necessarily a must watch movie, but I do suggest it. I probably could have used a different movie; maybe The Rock with Nicholas Cage. I just think Garden State is a fantastic film for what it is. I recommend it. I also recommend The Rock. Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage are absolutely fantastic in that movie. Like Die Hard, I could watch that movie all day, everyday. This past year, whenever I saw it on HBO, I'd turn it on and watch it.

Ok here goes (in no particular order):

Downfall: One of the best WWII movies i've ever seen. It's interesting to see the psychological breakdown of Hitler through the eyes of those who worked for him in the bunker. Bruno Ganz gives one of the best performances i've seen in recent years. The ironic part? He's jewish!

Transformers: By far the best summer blockbuster i've seen in years. This is one of those movies that you've always dreamed would make it to the big screen. This movie also has TRULY put Shia LeBouf on the map. I liked that the movie wasn't totally serious but when it needed to be it was done well.

Scarface: Ah you thought I was gonna mention the Al Pacino version but NO! I'm referring to the 1932 original. This movie singlehandedly launched the gangster film genre and was pretty cutting edge for its time. Paul Muni as the lead character Tony Carmonte had charm and came off as the man who wanted to own the world much better then Pacino did. Also while the ending of the '83 movie is iconic the '32 film had a stronger emotional punch IMO.

The Shootist: The last movie John Wayne ever made and it's a doozy. Seeing the Duke looking frail at times is a bit heartbreaking but the story is one that is engrossing all the way through. I especially liked his interactions with a young Ron Howard. This is one of the better westerns post 1970

Treasure of the Sierra Madre: A lot of people say that Casablanca is the definitive Bogart movie but it's not one of my favourites. This film however was the film that really launched Bogie to stardom and the treachery and mistrust of the three main characters works quite well. The chemistry between the actors really make the story go. You just don't see acting like that anymore

BONUS

The Petrified Forrest: The Bette Davis/Leslie Howard film is one of my favourites. It's a bit stagy but there's a realism to it that works quite well. To make a reference to a more modern film the setting and the feeling is similar to the Kevin Pollak film Deterrence. If you do watch this movie pay close attention to the dialogue between Howard and Davis early on in the film. I never thought watching two people talk could be so engrossing but it was something to behold.

My movies are movies not everyone may have seen, but I like them.

Star Wars Episode 3: This was quite possibly my favorite movie in the entire series, and it envokes the gambit of human emotions. The acting may seem a little stiff, but you have to look at the dialogue.

A Murder of Crows: This has Tom Berenger and Cuba Gooding Jr. in a plot that shows why you should always make the right decision even when no one is around.

Legends of the Fall: A true American tragedy, and the one movie that never fails to make me cry.

Apocalypto: This is one of those movies that is total awesomeness. I can't name a single actor in this movie, but it is one of those stories of inspiration. It is all about one man's determination to see his family again, and is among the most violent films ever.

Dead Presidents: Larenz Tate was not nominated for an Oscar, but he should have been. This is the story of a good person making bad decisions, and the consequences that come with those decisions. Chris Tucker and Terrence Howard turn in nice performances as well.

This is a tough question because there are so many movies to choose from - I'm going with less known films in hopes others will want to rent them (in no order)...

THE BELIEVER - great story and great performance by Ryan Gosling. About an antisemitic Jew.

PAN'S LABYRINTH- best movie of last year (2006) in my opinion - Spanish.

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM - you'll never want to do drugs again. Amazing cast - extremely intense story.

OLD BOY - intense. You just have to watch it - Korean.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS - intense movie that deals genuinely with human emotion - German.

You will think about each of these moves 2-3 days after watching them. I always think that makes for a great movie.

1. Y Tu Mama Tambien
2. Amores Perros - For both Y Tu Mama and Amores Perros, the reason is easy...no one I know saw these movies. I was lucky enough to catch Y Tu Mama back in '01 at one of the theaters in town that shows foreign films, and I was blown away. Two films that received great critical reviews, but unfortunately weren't seen by casual moviegoers.
3. Bottle Rocket - My favorite Wes Anderson film. Most people have heard of or seen Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic, maybe even Rushmore, but I think both Anderson, and Owen Wilson are at their best in this film.
4. Swingers - Surprisingly, most of my friends had never seen this movie. The ultimate post-dump/breakup film.
5. Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Running theme here of my friends not knowing of this movie. They've seen Clueless, they've seen Dazed and Confused, well here is the 80's high school comedy.

In no particular order:

Swingers - I'm surprised someone else mentioned this one. This one is more personal to me because I was a single guy in LA in the early 90's (when this movie was made) and I lived two blocks from the Derby (where Favreau's character meets Heather Grahams character). I can relate to so much of the stuff in this movie...from the impromptu Vegas trip, to sitting around playing NHL 94 (and trying to make your opponent's head bleed), to having 5 guys all drive separate cars to a bar. We even played golf (badly) at the same golf course they played at in the movie (Griffith park). A girl I know was also an extra in the movie (when she showed up for the shooting she thought the movie was a porno because none of the actors were known at that time and they shot the scene in a dingy bar). Anyways, this movie hits pretty close to home but it would be high on my list on its own merits. It's chalk-full of great scenes and great lines. The answering machine scene is one of the most painful/hilarious scenes of all time.

Clerks - The first one. A slacker-angst film. Another movie I could relate to when it came out (again early 90's).

The Godfather - A lot of people like the second one better, but Marlon Brando puts the first one on top for me.

The Big Lebowski - As someone above mentioned, this movie gets better each time you watch it. The Dude is one of the best movie "heroes" of all time. I think I own three versions of this movie on DVD (including the new HD-DVD).

Braveheart - Just a great movie.

Seeing 'History of the World - Part 1' prompts me to mention the all-time Mel Brooks classic...'The Producers'. Not the musical (which was good live) but the original 1965 movie with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. THAT is one to watch!

Seeing 'History of the World - Part 1' prompts me to mention the all-time Mel Brooks classic...'The Producers'. Not the musical (which was good live) but the original 1965 movie with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. THAT is one to watch!

If someone has never seen Star Wars or The Godfather, I would suggest those, but, to me, that's a given so...

Just five you say...well...

5) The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly - I was trying to decide between this and Fistful of Dollars, but overall I think the characters are infinitely better in Leone's finale to his Dollars trilogy. Classic wide-angles and closes-ups create an awesome atmosphere and terrific tension.
4) Bubba Ho-Tep - Ossie Davis as JFK and Bruce Campbell as Elvis. What else needs to be said?
3) Seven Samurai - The film is epic. Seven Samurai take it upon themselves to protect a town from bandits (which would later be remade into The Magnificent Seven). Love it.
2) The Princess Bride - Quite honestly, the best date movie ever. Its got action, romance, a ton of laughs, Andre the Giant, AND Columbo!
1) Leon The Professional - Gary Oldman is freakin' insane in his role. Jean Reno is amazing as Leon and Natalie Portman is also amazing. The relationship between Leon and Mathilda is very interesting.
