Direct TV HD: Is calibration worth it?

We recently purchased a high definition television and switched from Comcast to Direct TV. After it was installed, it was mentioned that the television/dish could be calibrated to enhance sharpness/overall quality for a fee of approximately $45. This calibration is done by Direct TV; I gather they send someone out to do it.

I am curious if anyone has had this calibration done, what it does exactly, and if you ultimately consider it to be worthwhile?

What they are doing is nothing but tweaking your TV image with the normal menu. You could rent Video Essentials or any HDTV calibrating DVD and do it yourself in a few hours tops.

Actual calibration runs you between 300-400 bucks, and is done where the tech actually goes into your TV service menu to tweak every last thing on your TV, that is very worth it.

But for this, I wouldn't do it.

I got the settings for my Vizio from Avsforum. A bunch of people who know tv's a lot better than me would post settings, and it looks great. I've considered getting the HD-DVD essentials disc thing, but i'm happy with my tv as it is and not worth the price (maybe Netflix has it? not sure)

Thanks for the replies and information.

A brief update/ammendment... The calibration is actually done by Circuit City, not Direct TV. Does that affect whether it should be considered or not? The price we were told was $45, not $300+.
