Not sure where to put this for the best exposure, but I picked here because it's not really a game:

Higurashi When They Cry is a sound novel. The music, backgrounds and characters work together to create a world that is the stage of a novel for the user to read. They laugh and cry and get angry. The user takes the point of view of the protagonist to experience the story.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni first arc, Onikakushi, now available on Steam at under $6.00 . It is a sound novel in the purest sense, meaning it has no voice acting. AFAIK it's not a "choice" game either - a branchless plot. The "choice" comes in what the characters do in later arcs, and to go into more detail than that is spoiling big time.

Wow, Higurashi made it to Steam. I'd like to see some Type Moon "games" make it to Steam. Things like Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, and event Melty Blood.

Yeah I'd like to see Fate at some point too.

At first I thought not having the character voices would lessen my enjoyment of the story, but it's not bad at all, really. Since I've "heard" the characters voices already in the anime (especially their unique verbal tics), it's easier for me to put the voice with the text. Which is good, because there's no indication of who's speaking aside from maybe a character sprite changing.

The novel seems to expand on the normal relationship between the club members a lot better when the anime just kind of blew through it to get to the horror part in about 40 minutes of screen time. And I got a sense of the foreshadowing of themes that will become very important as the later arcs come out - just how friendly and close-knit the group is. And it's going to make it all the more worse when each arc inevitably breaks down (that's the point where I'm at in the first arc right now, in fact).

Also, from what I've read about this novel each arc is narrated in the first-person by its central character - in Onikakushi's case, that's Keiichi. It's not so different from the anime in this arc because the anime centers around him (and seeing things only from his point of view is vital to the first arc's story), but it's going to be very different in some later arcs when you go inside the head of some of the other characters.

Thats one of the reasons I refuse to get into One Piece and them shows with 400+ episodes. Cant do it, tell your story and move on lol.
One Piece doesn't have that much filler TBH. Just like 2-3 episodes after each major story arch(which takes about 50-75 episodes just to complete). Only problem like you said is that they take way to long on the story. Hunter X Hunter is amazing, got pretty pissed with it after something happen, but it is still a great anime. Gonna have to watch it over.

This is another anime with over 100 episodes, but it is worth it. Yu Yu Hakusho has 112 episodes with no filler(similar to HxH). It a 90s anime but it is well made. I also recommend Tokyo Ghoul which has 24 episodes(12 episodes each season).

Just watched Food War! Shokugeki no Souma and it is great. I watched the first 7 episodes and I and impress with it. It reminds me a lot of Kuroko Basketball and Ace of Diamond, despite it not being sports but cooking. Can't wait to see how the rest of the show.

Hunter x Hunter is something I always wanted to get into but I am not sure I want to do the anime or the Manga. With OP I went with manga but the problem with ongoing is your left with cliff hangers.

Finished Maou Testament and caught up on Triage X and DxD. I was a little unhappy with DxD but the last 2 episodes are going back to the right LN order so I am good now. I see why they did the things they did to add in Irena and Ross earlier for screen time and it didnt mess up events that much.
Most of the time I rather watch the anime because it prints a better picture for me. With HxH it is anime hands down, you would not be disappointed with watching the anime once it get going. I have to re-watch it since I got pissed at a certain point and stop.

I just started DeathNote. Not sure if I like it or not despite being 10+ episodes in, when it usually takes me 1-3 episodes to decide.

How is Triage X and Darker than Black? I'm thinking of watching that next, Fate/Stay, or Plastic Memories.

Triage X is interesting so far. Very violent but it's Echii. If you dislike that I stay away even though it's heavily censored.

Darker than black is great. Story doesn't really get progressed until the end, up until that it's basically "bad guy" per episode format but the action scenes are extremely well done.

I'm also hearing good things about Plastic memories. It's not a genre I'm usually into however.

I still got to finish Fate/zero after putting it in hold at like episode 9 or so. Lol.

Some of the music from the Higurashi Novel is ****ing creepy. I don't remember anything quite like this from the anime (it had a habit of playing the main theme during the darker moments, which is a little more somber/sorrowful)

              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oB7lctRjHZY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Again, it does a very good job of setting the mood without actual voice acting.

Im not sure if anyone watched DxD but everyone should see next weeks episode. Its going to be great. Its a part of the LN that all readers have always wanted to see animated.

                Remember it is echii though.

On the slice of life topic, I just watched Golden Time. I really enjoyed Toradora and this is from the same people, and I did really like it. There were times were it just got too overdramatic for me to really enjoy the entirety of it, but as a whole I'm not disappointed in it at all.

I've seen 21/26 of Mirai Nikki/Future Diary. Off of pure enjoyment, I'd give it a 9.5/10.

Too bad enjoyment isn't everything. The series is nuts, way too many things happen each episode and the plot holes are massive. Some crazy **** happens one episode, two episodes later the show doesn't mention it and completely forgets. The show has major flaws, but damn, it's one hell of a ride. Most people seem to love it or hate it, while I am in the minority in the middle. There's never been a dull moment since the second episode, and that's mostly a good thing. The addictive-ness of this show is almost Code Geass-like. Except CG doesn't have nearly as many flaws.

Currently bracing myself for the infamous ending.
