I loved DBZ when I was younger (still do for the most part), but looking back at it it has definitely lost some of its luster. I'd rather watch it then the garbage that is Naruto though.

I stop watching DBZ early because of Cowboy Bebop and The Big O. Find it funny I was able to watch Big O but not Gundam. Guess it was the story of Gundam at the time for me. Still don't watch that much Mecha soon, but might go back and watch it. I'm still confused on Cowboy Bebop though. I loved the show but didn't understand what was going on half the time. Going to have to watch this over as well.

Working is slice of life, so if you aren't into those you can stay away. I'm also not super far into it but when I'm laying in bed before I fall asleep I really enjoy watching slice of life/comedy stuff to unwind.
I'm most likely going to like Working since I just recently started watching a lot of Slice of Life animes. As for DB, it sounds like it going to be good.

Bebop got me into anime music when I first originally saw it. Yoko Kanno(Bebop, Darker Than Black, Macross Plus and Frontier, GITS SAC) is amazing.

LOL I wonder did you attempt Naruto and drop it or have you never experienced it.

Regardless I think you should re-think Naruto and only read the manga. The series is ended(for now). About 20 pages across 700 chapters seems like a task but I GUARANTEE you will stick around for the character development DBZ just never had a chance to have.

Part 1 Naruto is very well written and honestly I would be fine with it's ending never seeing a part 2. Naruto's popularity does "over hype" it a bit and there are moments in part 2 including much of the last arc that suffer from this, as you can see the pressure on kishi to finish. Overall, though as an original story it holds its own and should be something any anime/manga connoisseur should experience.

I wouldn't call it original, nor would I ever say it's something one should experience.

It's basically just DBZ for the generation younger than me. Not in terms of story, but in terms of quality and general place in the anime world.

I read all of Naruto. It started out well, then went downhill big time after the time skip. The final act was basically crappy fan fic.

                        What is original about it?

The story isn't original, Naruto is just Goku in a different universe, scenes were straight up ripped off (or "paid homage") from movies/other anime.

It's not a knock on it. I don't hate Naruto at all, but original is not one word I'd use to describe it - and there's nothing wrong with that.

Just like the original Dragon Ball (not Z) wasn't an original story. It was based on/inspired by Journey to the West. That's all without getting into the Hunter x Hunter comparisons.

                          Ok I'll bite.

All of the shounen action/adventure mangas all have main character's that bite off Goku in a way. I feel like its done on purpose for most mangaka's as it is a base to guarantee that your MC will be loved and that your story can become popular. As far as inspiration; Yes I am aware that kishi took from the matrix, jackie chan movies, Japanese mythology/Buddhism and some of his fav anime/manga. I like that about him he pulled so many random elements together to spit out all of these characters & techniques, Not every mangaka can just do that easily right out the gate.

I think what makes Naruto unique(lets table the original word for a bit) is its universe it has that Star Wars feel to it. Established rules and laws from how chakra works in the body to how the governments in the world works it is well thought-out that IMO cannot be argued. Sure yes the other big three One Piece and Bleach have the similar affect and they are also popular because of it, that should be the goal of any mangaka in the shounen genre make your universe original and not easily copied.

Do you consider Death Note or Attack on Titan unoriginal?

I've never watched Death Note or Attack on Titan.

I've watched the entirety of Naruto, and not too much of Shippuden. It's not original or unique in any real way (Note: This goes for most things produced for mass consumption) but that doesn't make it a bad show. It's just a well done shounen, if that's what you are into.

Think of it like sitcoms. There are certain rules sitcoms follow, due to syndication stuff. There are certain rules that make things shounen "rockstars."

Stop thinking of unoriginal/not-unique as a bad thing.

Look I started Naruto when I was 13. 23 now its just close to my heart. I have out grown shounen in a way it's format is way to linear for me to enjoy anymore.

If you have netflix I HIGHLY SUGGEST watching death note(50 episodes) and attack on titan(24 episodes) they kinda lean more towards seinen and have very grounded storyline's and character's.

                              Any ecchi manga enthusiast here?

Death Note is one I want to watch but never gotten around to.

Attack on Titan was terrible to me, but that's just personal preference. Stopped it after a couple episodes.

Also, yes. Naruto for you is DBZ for my generation.
