    Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread

Well they are sending me the right order along with a pre paid envelope to return the incorrect one, so there goes that. I did find some nice h264 encodes though of the entire series and it's going at a pretty nice clip; so I'll still check it out.

Oh yeah, Appleseeed Ex Machina s going to be released this month, but HD and Xvid rips are already on the net. I don't know if you guys saw the one from a few years back but I recommend it. I got the HD version on my hard drive and it looks amazing. Hopefully the story is as good as the first as well.
    PS: You guys are great.

I'm sure you can find some clips to decide if you want to keep it or not.

The new appleseed should be pretty good btw. That's out in about 2 weeks, no?

Aw man, I thought you guys were joking. I didn't look at any pics when I did the search initially but just did, lol. Think I'm a bit more interested now.

I hear you man. I still buy cds and dvds too (obviously) but only when I know what I am getting. Too much hit or miss, and I don't like having things in my collection that I just don't/can't watch. Learned that the hard way with Armitage III, Wicked City and Red Hawk lol.

Oh yeah, I have another recommendation; I don't think it was mentioned before, try Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin). I am talking about the OVAs, not the tv series. I believe they are called, "Trust" "Betrayal" and "Reflection". You can get these in director's cuts on Amazon for a nice price that is well worth it. It tells a great story, pretty violent, very emotional; it's really good stuff. If you haven't seen them, you should.

                Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread

Probably started really getting into anime with Dragonball back in the day, then DBZ and Tenchi Muyo!. Those are also just about the only series where I want the english dubs, everything else original audio and subs please.

My favorites.. hard to quantify. Off the top for series, definitely Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Detective Conan, Wolf's Rain. I liked Rahxephon & NGE but they started off great but ended in less than stellar fashion, which seems to be a common occurence with alot of series. Not enough manga i guess. Recent newer series that I loved was (not sure of title) History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. Probably my favorite martial arts themed series.

For movies, obvious ones are Ninja Scroll & Metropolis as well as Grave of the fireflies & most of the Detective Conan movies. Loved Blood: The Last Vampire (Blood+ is also a good series if you don't go in expecting the same tone as the film) Theres alot more but i've watched such a ridiculous amount of anime series and movies over these last 3 years at college I can't keep track of em. I'm at the point where i try to get at least one song from the series just so I can remember it. Someone would probably have to mention some of them to jog my memory.

                Other Good Series

                Noir (great music)
                Elven Lied (graphic)
                Gunslinger Girl
                Mushishi (real change of pace)
                Perfect Blue (good movie)
                Love Hina
                Basilisk
                Samurai Deeper Kyo
Ninja Scroll (not related to the movie, kind of jumps around)
Rourouni Kenshin OVAs are pretty good, battosai man slayer and all that
Please Teacher (if you like romance/comedy anime)

                other good Movies

                Escaflowne (dont remember full name)
                Kite
                Princess Mononoke
Howls Castle (dont remember full name)

also check for the ones by the guy behind Metropolis

                Anime I'm trying to see

                Witchblade DVD

I've watched most of the series and it's pretty good. I'll have to see if I can find those.

The_Kid, if you haven't seen Vampire Hunter D or Afro Samurai I highly recommend them. RZA did the soundtrack for Afro.

                    Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread

I finished watching Appleseed Ex Machina. The visuals are nothing short of stunning, especially in HD. It's worth the download just to check out how beautifully the cg animation is rendered. The action scenes are tight, with Matrix-esque slow motion shots, crazy camera angles and an emphasis on heavy gun play, indicative of producer John Woo's style. One drawback on the cg animation though is that when characters interact with each other physically it seems awkward. They don't feel like they are touching. I imagine that when you make something with animation like that you'd run into clipping issues when the characters intereact heavily. In fact, it reminded me of cut scenes from Eternal Sonata, a video game using similar animation techniques but on a bigger scale obviously.

The story is an upgrade from the first movie, although the main antagonist borrows heavily from classic Star Trek villain, the Borg. There's even a Borg like cube of sorts that serves as it's foundation. The subplot consists of a triangle between Deunan, Briareos (the main protagonists from the first movie) and Tereus, a biroid created mostly from Briareos's DNA who becomes Deunan's new partner after her lover falls in battle.

If I were to make a criticism I'd say that the main antagonist was revealed a tad too late, making the final resolution a little anti-climactic. At a runtime of about an hour and 40 minutes I felt like another 20 minutes would have been justified. When it was over, I couldn't quite believe it at first. Also, and this may be a good thing, events from the first movie go almost completely without mention. This means that you won't have to have seen the first one to appreciate this, but at the same time there is a lack of continuity for those that did.

All in all though, it's a good film and worth a watch.

                      Re: Anime/Manga Discussion Thread

Well, I downloaded the series and I have to say, it's very entertaining so far; albeit it's something I would have never sought after. It's one of the funniest anime I've ever seen and only being on episode 5 (or 3 or 4 depending on which way you decide to watch the episodes) I am a fan.

In regards to the episode order viewing the deal is that the episodes originally aired out of chronological order. So as you watched the show the plot jumped back and forth through the time line of the series. Some people have since re-ordered the eps to watch them chronologically, and the dvd lines up the episodes in a whole other way. I decided to watch it the way it broadcast originally in Japan.

You guys should download and watch this. As a matter of fact, longshadow11 if you are reading this, this would be great for you and your daughter I think.

I recently watched Vampire Hunter D & Bloodlust, both were pretty good, I probably liked the first more.

Afro Samurai, I've watched the series a couple times but I only thought it was alright. The action was great and the animation top notch but the replay value is at zero for me. LOVE the soundtrack for it though, Favorite RZA song from it is probably Fury In My Eyes, he performed it on one of the late night shows last year. I'm sure its on youtube.

I haven't heard of the appleseed movies though, i'm looking forward to them now.

Oh ok. I read the first chapter and it was hella weird.

Oh, you're reading the manga? I was watching the anime (didn't finish cause Crunchy Roll took it down). There is Maya (the purple haired student who walks around as a little kid to conserve power), there is Aya (Maya's sister) who is in love with Soichiro(sp?) cause Maya knocked him into the same shower as Aya. Bob is Soichiro's right hand man. Bob and Soichiro roll up to the school thinking they can dominate it only to realize their skills aren't up to par. Also, the brother of the character Takyanagi runs the school.
