    Check out Manyuu Hikenchou, it's....different.

It is currently the Taiheimeji Era. It is a reign ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate. Inside this shogunate, there is a group of warriors that support the government. They are the Manyuu Clan.

In this current era, breasts mean everything. If you have breasts, you are guaranteed wealth and popularity. If you lack them, you are rarely considered “human”. Members of the Manyuu Clan help raise the future big breasts. Written on a secret scroll possessed by the clan, there is said to be various techniques on how to grow big and beautiful breasts.

Chifusa is to be successor of the clan. However, she takes the secret scroll and runs away with it, hoping to fight against the cruel world that the Manyuu Clan has created…

I think they were looking for an excuse to use the word "breasts" as many times as possible in a plot synopsis.

Man, I've really gotten into this Full Metal Panic series. After watching the first three seasons I've gotten into the novels. Currently on Novel 8 out of 10 and so far it's been a great story. I hope they come back eventually and wrap the anime up as well.

FMP is up there as one of my favorites.

Currently i'm getting around to finally watching the second season of Darker Than Black. I've had it at the top of my list to watch since forever and finally am getting a chance to watch it.

Also, Fate/Zero looks pretty good in this upcoming season.

I finally finished the novels. Great story all around with a good ending. Hopefully it sees anime form one day.

Also been watching High School of the Dead on Netflix. Damn good anime... episode 6 was crazy. Sure wasn't expecting that. lol

Evangelion 1.11-Bluray, Trigun, complete series-DVD and FLCL complete series-Bluray are all going to be on sale on Amazon on Monday. Definitely picking up Evangelion. It's 11.99 now so hopefully it drops to five bucks. Trigun is 23.99 right now so I'm thinking it goes down to 10-12 bucks, expecting FLCL to be around that same price.

Pretty new to the whole anime thing. I of course watched DBZ as a kid, but always considered that and Naruto as "cartoons" instead of anime. I absolutely loved Death Note. The story was amazing imo, loved how intelligent, and how well put together it is. I also saw Elfen Lied, and loved it as well again for the story and whatnot. I saw Claymore, and thought it was very good, but about halfway through it seems everything is jumbled up, and it isn't as polished as it starts out as (and the boy is annoying as hell). Any other anime you guys would suggest that is maybe as complex as death note or something with a great story? Preferably something that isn't too long like say Bleach is.

I always suggest Cowboy Bebop to people newer to anime. Only a season's worth of episodes and its considered one of the best ones (generally). Not as complex as Death note though i'll definitely tell you that.

you really want to get philosophical go with Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex seasons. There's two, 1st complex and 2nd gig. each about 23 episodes.

Will explain why later when I have time, but you might enjoy Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (When The Cicadas Cry), it was referenced earlier in this thread.

The first season of it does have an English Dub, if subbed anime doesn't appeal to you.

                              Okay, so Higurashi...

It has many elements of those two shows that you named, Elfen Lied and Death Note. Very psychological mystery type of anime, you'll be trying to figure out just what the hell is going on right along with the characters (one in particular), through most of it. Also drops into the horror genre quite a bit, as it gets quite bloody when things go wrong (and oh boy, do they ever!). If you weren't squeamish over Elfen Lied, you shouldn't have any problem with it though (some of Lied's scenes still make me wince).

One word of caution though - I know you said you don't like annoying characters, and Higurashi's can be that at times when they're acting normal (you could mistake it for slice-of-life at times). But it really serves to contrast when they go off-the-wall bat**** crazy, and I think the effect works really well. The whole anime is defined by those types of mood swings.

It has two normal seasons of 26 and 24 episodes, with a third season being an OVA of sorts.

Picked up Evangelion and Trigun this morning. FLCL was sold out. Trigun doesn't show up in the Lightning Deals despite it being listed as going on sale according to calender. I had to contact support and adjusted the price after I made the order.
