Spider Man is not a dark character. he's your friendly neighborhood wall crawler who cracks jokes on his enemies while he beats them up. He's had his dark moments (the symbiote, any time he's dealt with Typhoid Mary), but that's not who he is. He's a bright, goofy young guy who plays super hero and has fun with it. I wouldn't mind seeing one of those darker stories brought to the screen but for the most part I think people need to get off that Nolan tip. It worked for Batman because that's the type of character Batman is. Now everyone wants to see dark Ninja Turtles, dark Spider Man, dark Archie and Jughead. It's crazy.

Every character needs somewhat darker moments to emphasize the brighter parts, but for Spider-man the dark moments should be just that, moments, not a perpetual bleakness.
Consider me disappointed that Raimi is returning. I thought by the third film his act had grown stale (mostly felt in the overblown, overproduced "emo Peter" dance scene). I wanted a fresh mind at the helm for a new one but perhaps he's learned from the third and will go back to a more subtle approach. They need to get the heavy-handed Aunt May out of the picture though. By the third movie I had grown incredibly sick of her life lessons to Peter that are all too convenient in coinciding with what's going on with Spider-man. Kirsten Dunst must go though, and Venom needs to be alive.
A Venom-centered Spider-man 4 could help wipe away the sour taste left behind by Spider-man 3. Just rip-off the old McFarlane-era Spidey where Venom harasses Peter endlessly building up to some rewarding conflicts. They could even have him kill MJ in a Gwen Stacey like fashion (then have Gwen replace MJ, why not?). Either way, I'm sick of this MJ character.
Lastly, one thing that does work for Batman that I think could work for Spider-man would be to have less emphasis on the "super" villain and something more grounded. If they decide against a Venom story then I am in favor of the suggested Kingpin angle. Bring in some villains that aren't the result of science gone wrong but are focused, evil individuals. It could even be a villain from the comics that did have the whole bad experiment back story (that was Stan Lee's gimmick, if you will) but give him/her a new origin. A Black Cat story wouldn't be too bad either, especially if they get to it before a Catwoman story in the Batman series. She's a good foil for Spider-man, and for MJ as a love interest.Comment

Also I'm not saying he needs to be Batman dark, but they need more dark. Or maybe not dark but more serious. Not that stupid dressing in emo scenes with him dancing off chandeliers with every movie being around MJ. While at the same time letting criminals like Sandman fly out away into the wind.
The comic world is huge and doesn't need to revolve around MJ all the time either.
I just want a change. I'm a huge Spider-man fan, have been since I've been a kid and the 3rd movie made me sick. Especially the way they disgraced Venom.Comment

Re: Spider-Man 4
Agreed. What works for Batman doesn't work for everyone. A dark Spider-man, dark Superman, dark whatever isn't always what's best. Spider-man 3 was dark, and look how good that turned out.

Re: Spider-Man 4
They had a golden opprotunity to make spider-man corrupted. From the begining with the trailer of the dark spider-man it was working really well, then they made him "emo" and have his dark side just be a greatest display of duchery in movie history.
In this movie they shouldn't:- Make Spiderman "dark"
- Have any romantic relationships
- Have bad situations be ifxed easily
- Villains who realize what they did was wrong/not really be villains
- Spidermans love for attention
- The infatuation of every living citizen of spiderman

Re: Spider-Man 4
No. Sure I've missed more than I've bought, but that's beside the point. You said they should make Spider Man dark like he's supposed to be, which is a false statement, because he isn't a dark character. Like I said, he's had some dark moments, but that doesn't make him a dark character. Batman, Punisher, Daredevil, Spawn, these are dark characters. Spider Man, Superman, Captain America, these are not so dark characters.Last edited by trobinson97; 09-06-2008, 10:26 PM.PS: You guys are great.

You said he is a goofy/funny kid which is true but at the same time he is a troubled and complicated kid with serious problems. I want them to go away from the love story angle or keep it minor and tackle a more serious plot and stick with it.Comment

Re: Spider-Man 4
I guess I am too old, but Spiderman was around for generation before Venom and had some really good enemies, I never really wanted them to do Venom this fast and this early. Yes Venom is a great enemy but the way the went around to making this story possible is way out there for a comic less a movie.
I mean there was no back story behind the suit and why it has the effects it has and the whole experience and rivalry between spiderman and the suit. They made it more between Brock and Parker and yeah Brock hates Parker but it's the suit that should have gotten more time. The suit loves and hates Spiderman, without the suit Brock means nothing. It's the suit that is angry with Spiderman and wants him back.
If anything they should have let Spidey keep the suit for the whole movie and have a cliff hanger where spidey does something sick like use it to kill Kraven and realizes the suit is a danger to him.
Where is Kraven, Tombstone, Kingpin and Sandman was one of Spiderman's most powerful enemies he has ever had and in the movie he was marginalized.Comment

Re: Spider-Man 4
I think Kraven would be cool, but they should have started building up the Kingpin with #2 to set him up in another film as the major crime boss in NYC.

Re: Spider-Man 4
A 4th edition? Honestly, when something goes on to a 4th release.. I mean what's the last 4th to be good? Or maybe there hasn't been.. SM3 was digustingly bad though, so I don't think they have to try that hard to make SM4 better.Comment

Re: Spider-Man 4
I thought the 4th Indiana Jones movie was good and many thought Rocky IV was good (it was just okay to me), so there is a precedent for a 4th being good. But I don't know if there has ever been a good 4th movie when the 3rd wasn't so hot. Well I take that back, I thought the 4th Rambo movie was really good, especially compared to the 3rd, but with such a huge time gap in between those movies, it probably isn't a good comparison.
