    Re: Star Trek: The Movie

I just got back from the Imax and WOW!!! This movie was phenomenal. As a trek fan (not a trekkie though as i'm not that hardcore) I was really apprehensive about this movie but it blew my expectations right out of the water. Just a fantastic, must-see movie for all sci-fi fans, Star Trek fans or not.

Maybe for a split second...then I remembered it was Diora Baird. She needed more screen-time.

I saw it again today and I just can't believe how good the special effects are. Unlike alot of movies, you can't tell what's real and what isn't. I'm glad that Abrams didn't rely on the green screen for every shot.

Awesome movie, loved it. Great job with the casting - the guy I had the most doubt about was the person playing Bones/DeForest Kelley's character (think it's the guy from Lord of the Rings). That doubt disappeared the first few minutes he appeared on screen. The whole crew had a lot of chemistry; it was extremely cool seeing these characters as their younger selves. Will be shooting to go see it again tomorrow or Sunday
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

First time going to the movie theater since Iron Man. After all the glowing reviews, I went in with high expectations. This did NOT disappoint. An instant must buy when it comes out on blu ray.

Yeah I was a little skeptical about Karl Urban too. Like you said, he was in LOTR: The Two Towers and was also the guy chasing after Jason Bourne in the Bourne Supremacy. I thought he did a great job. The whole cast did.

96% favorable on Rottentomatoes.com - wow that is rare an action type oriented movie is that high. In fact I think that may be the first action oriented movie i've ever seen rated that high on that site.

                            Re: Star Trek: The Movie

This was a very good movie. Definitely everything you want from a sci-fi action movie. JJ Abrams breathed new life into this franchise and made it relevant again to people that weren't fanatics.

I was pleasantly surprised by the acting. Movies like this usually don't have that sort of quality. There were times that Kirk was a bit awkward when sentimental, but most of the time he was impressive. The same can be said for every other character. I think the writers did a nice job of throwing in lines that everyone knows (ie: I'm a doctor, not a physicist!")

That being said, I'm seeing people pop out calling this movie better than the Star Wars trilogy.

No. Let's calm down here and really think about this. Well, first, when will people stop comparing the two franchises? They aren't even similar at all. They have one thing in common and it's space. Big deal.

Star Wars is emotionally deeper than this Star Trek film. The convoluted storyline in Star Wars is not matched at all. This isn't to take away from Star Trek. Star Trek is a sci-fi action film where Star Wars is more sci-fi drama in comparison.

But, come on, calling this movie better than the Star Wars trilogy? Maybe if you don't like Star Wars, I can get that. But, I'm hearing this from people that enjoyed Star Wars. I wish people would just wait a week before they start calling films the best ever. It happens all the time. "OMG! LiKe I jus sAw da NEW Star TRek film n ItS likE tHe BEST!!111 moviieee EVah!!111 OMG!"

It's definitely better than the latest Star Wars movies though.

Also, what did you guys think of that scene where Kirk is a teenager and driving that car while they were playing Beastie Boys? I love it but I've read some reviews where the reviewer said it was the worst part of the film. I was like..WTF?? I thought it was freakin' killer!!

Yeah...this movie was 10 million different kinds of awesome.

Seriously, completely reset the series in a great point for everyone to get into. It had nods to the past series, but it'll be its own. Not really "campy" or anything like that.

I'll admit that I'm shocked Tyler Perry was in it and didn't require the movie be titled "Tyler Perry's Star Trek"

As for the Wars vs. Trek debate, that'll go on forever. Hardcore Star Wars fans will always drool over the first 3, and hardcore Trek fans will always drool over tribbles, it's how it'll be. That being said, I do think this is infinitely better "modern" wise compared to the newest 3 Star Wars movies. I liked those movies, but always left a little disappointed, whereas this movie had me completely hooked throughout.
