Re: What movies have you seen recently?
X-Men First Class- After reading some of the rave reviews/impressions about the movie, I have to say I was left slightly disappointed by it. Thought it was significantly better than Origins Wolverine, X3 and X1, but I still prefer X2 over it. I didn't really find the other characters besides Charles, Magneto and Raven that interesting. I would probably give it 7.5/10, and at least for me it doesn't quite stack up to my favorite superhero movies. Still a solid movie though, and the cameo appearance bySpoilerWolverine(Hugh Jackman)Last edited by mgoblue678; 09-13-2011, 08:55 PM.My Teams

See that's why I didn't use the actual tag.
Thor
It was ok. Not great. Had some charm but felt it was lacking heart and some parts seemed forced. Lots of flash and nice set pieces. I honestly don't know a whole lot about Thor, think I've got maybe one comic so maybe it's just me. Seemed to be shot a bit oddly,I normally don't notice the way a movie is shot so that stood out for better or worse.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched that old movie Logan's Run.
Liked it better than the original Tron. Blasphemy maybe. Why am I even comparing the two? I don't know. Maybe because it's science fiction? I can't say for sure.
Anyway, besides the horrible acting and ridiculous costumes, I liked the story. Definitely gets better as soon as Logan starts running."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Due Date
I avoided this like the plague in theaters, as I didn't think it would be much of anything. I must say though, it was a pretty lovable comedy. The shtick stayed strong for the majority of the movie, with a little flatness near the end (due to them trying to outdo themselves).
Zach Galifianakis can get on my nerves at times, but he was actually pretty tolerable in this film. He wasn't just there to make the crowd laugh because of blank stares. The script was pretty tight for a movie that primarily focused on two guys on the road, and it didn't go overboard with abusing its R-rating.
I'd pretty much recommend this to anybody who likes The Hangover, and to any fans of RDJ in general. It certainly has the laughs throughout that go beyond what the trailer just shows you.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
All 3 Star Wars originals.
I never noticed they spent the entire first movie pronouncing it Lee-ah and then for the rest of the movies Lay-ah. Or Hon instead of Han.
Other stuff I didn't notice before...
Leia and Luke sure kissed a lot.
Han Solo is a ****.
Leia just kinda forgot Luke and went for Han despite him being a ****.
Just when I was thinking how well they still hold up I realized an EMP would've solved 90% of the issues.
Still good times though.Comment

Underwhelmed by this one. Had a lot of promise, but didn't like the way Marsden's character was portrayed.I'm a Vince McMahon Guy!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Well I watched Green Lantern...
You know, the trailers and commercials did that movie no favors at all while it wasn't a great movie it was okayish. There's an old axiom that if a movie is written by more than 3 people then the script is not great and the movie isn't good either. Well this movie was written by 5 guys (including comics writer Marc Guggenheim) so it's a bit muddled. There are some things really wrong with this movie though like the beginning which tries to be **** and bombastic but is pure cheese and reminds one of a 1990s straight to DVD film. They also thrust in as much of Hal Jordan's backstory in a very hamfisted way.
That being said there was some good to it such as Ryan Reynolds' portrayal of Hal. The commercial and trailers made me think he was being a goofball and didn't have the gravitas for the role but in the actual film he does show a lot of character growth and can be a bit serious. So at the very least they did a good job of making Hal likeable.
Blake Lively does a good job as Carol Ferris and one of villains of the piece (Hector Hammond) is played very well by Peter Sarsgaard whom i've never heard of but he nails the character down cold. I love the ending showdown between he and GL. The GL corps members that are prominent in the movie (Sinestro, Kilowog, and Toma-Re) aren't badly done. The latter two are CGI and have their voices supplied by actors while Sinestro is actually played by an actor (Mark Strong) who does a credible job. This leads into the special effects....
The SFX is a bit uneven IMO, the flying around in space stuff and being on Oa looks a bit cheesy. It isn't helped by the not so great soundtrack either. The good thing though is that constructs from the GL ring are done VERY well and looks to be a mix of CGI and actual objects. (there's a part in Hal's training where a shield/discuss is thrown at him and it looks real) In a lot of ways though I think the CGI as an overall package was a bit of a letdown.
The movie has another villain in the form of Paralax and this leads me to complain about the ending of the movie. The way Paralax is disposed of is so anti-climactic which in turn gives this movie a very limp ending. I mean seriously
SpoilerHal hurling Paralax into the sun! Couldn't there have been something a little more thrilling? It was such a short "fight" scene too!
All in all it was an okay movie. It wasn't great but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be from looking at the advertising. I can see why the movie didn't get too much positive buzz though as it's definitely not worth going out to the theatres to see.
This is a middling 2 star film.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
