Just watched The Big Lebowski and The Never Ending Story back to back on Netflix. Both of them are classics and get better with every watch.

Last night I watched Labyrinth on Blu Ray. I hadn't seen the movie in probably 15 years but, I remembered enjoying it when I was a kid. It was ok watching as an adult, it's kind of cool seeing a film that George Lucas and Jim Henson worked together in.

The Good: this movie has some funny moments that I'm sure you will enjoy
The Bad: The acting isn't that great and there are plenty of Goofs in the movie if you really look for them
The Ugly: David Bowie's teeth in Blu Ray is pretty disgusting.

Synopsis: If you have a child I'm sure that they will love it but, as for adults maybe, not so much.

Yeah I agree. I watched it the other day when I saw it was available to watch instantly with Netflix and I was excited to see it again. My kids liked it but I was a victim of the nostalgia bug. The same thing happened with The Neverending Story. It's funny though, I still love The Dark Crystal to death.

Just watched Breach. Pretty good film, and I like films that are "based on a true story." Was expecting a little action in it, but I liked the plot a lot.

Anyway, I watched The Omen last night. The one thing that I am starting to notice when watching older horror films is that while they didn't have the technology at its disposal to generate scars/thrills, the casting they did was creepy. The Omen definitely has it fair share of creepy characters - all of them (at least to me) being creepy in some way or another. Of course there are degrees of creepiness, but I really liked the characters in the film.

Unfortunately I now want to watch the rest of the series.

Here's a review from my TCM blog (I joined their Classic Film Union)

                    Parole Girl (1933)

Early this morning I had the pleasure of watching an interesting movie on TCM. Sometimes the offerings at around that time aren't so great but this little gem really caught me not because of the plot (which was paper thin) but moreso by the acting performances. Essentially the movie is about a lady named Sylvia (Mae Clarke) who is part of a grifting scam to rob people at shops etc etc and is more or less forced into it by a slimeball named Tony. (Hale Hamilton) Anyway, she gets caught and tries to plead her way out of going to jail and the president of the store tries to get her off but the insurance adjuster Joe Smith (Ralph Bellamy) wouldn't bend the rules for her.

Well Sylvia's thrown in the slammer and gets some info on Joe from one of her prisonmates who just so happens was married to him (what a stretch!) and so Sylvia concocts a plan to make Joe's life unbearable which involves her and Tony setting up Joe so that Sylvia becomes "married" to him and so goes the film....

Like I said the thing that really caught my interest was the acting. Mae Clarke was wonderful in this film though I have to say with the way her hair was done up and her features I kept thinking "Carrie Fisher" LOL. Anyways she plays the woman scorned to a tee. The scene where a hungover Joe finds out that he's "married" to Sylvia was great stuff the way that Sylvia wrapped him around her finger and oh so naturally explained that she's married to him and now she's his wife which would make it so that Joe is comitting bigamy so he can't wiggle out of it. She wants Joe to play nice nice with her and go to the parole officer every month to tell them just how good Sylvia is while she gets to play with Joe's money and make his life a living hell. There's a sweet side to Clarke's character too like when she has to entertain Joe's boss later in the film and you see the makings of a wonderful relationship between her and Joe. Clarke's acting was quite subtle for the era and I found that very refreshing.

Hale Hamilton as the sleazy con man/grifter Tony was excellent in his role. Every time I saw him on screen I just wanted to punch him out. Hamilton gave Tony this melodious yet menacing type of voice and demeanor that suited the character well. A great scene that shows how sleazy and "bad" Tony is is the scene where Sylvia comes back to tell him she's not going to Chicago to work with him any more and he at first begs her to come with him then tries rough sex/violence to entice her and finally when all else fails he slips some counterfeit money in her purse hoping to get her thrown back in the pokey.

The one performance though that really pushed me to post this was the performance of Joe's boss by Ferdinand Gottschalk. I don't think i've ever seen his work before but WOW what great acting! He took a small but key role in some ways and infused it with life. The whole bit where he visits Sylvia and Joe and talks about how he likes to cook and the problems he has at home convincing his wife to let him cook etc etc was just brilliant and then he more or less tells Joe and Sylvia to have a baby but in such a wonderful way that it's hardly offensive even though he tells joe "no baby, no vice presidency!". Gottschalk really stole the show in this picture and i'm glad I got to see his work in this.

Last but not least Ralph Bellamy didn't really have much to do in this movie but he was ok. The only thing that surprised me was that he actually gets the girl in the end which I believe later in his career he was known as "the other guy" so he'd always end up losing out in the end. I know it was early in his career so he didn't have that rap yet.

Overall, this was a pretty neat picture not really for the plot though it's serviceable but it's the acting that shines through. I give it 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was a great western and has a solid blu ray transfer.

Okay I saw G.I. Joe and I have to say I enjoyed it. I wasn't as big a Joe fan as I was Transformers as a kid, so I didn't really worry too much about how they would adapt it for the big screen. I think it's for that reason that I enjoyed it a lot more than I did the Transformers movies. I wasn't expecting anything and came out satisfied.

One thing that killed me though was the kid who would become

All in all though it was a fun movie. Nice action sequences and special effects. Kids loved it.

Watched Halloween and Bram Stoker's Dracula last night (both on bd)

Halloween, still classic. Its hard to believe there used to be a time without Michael Myers and John Carpenter's awesome soundtrack.

Bram Stoker's Dracula - this movie trips me out every time I watch it. Everybody is so eccentric and weird, that it amplifies the craziness of some of the scenes. Oldman and Hopkins are awesome - too bad there is a noticeable difference of talent between Oldman and Hopkins and then the rest of the cast.
