The Dark Knight Rises: This is maybe my #2 favorite hate watch behind Man of Steel, I've seen them both a bunch of times. I legit can't imagine someone sitting through this and coming away with the conclusion that it's a good movie, it's just so bad to me. It's legit exciting to watch which is the weirder thing, Hathaway I thought was really good as Catwoman. Bruce in these movies just doesn't come off the way I want/expect him to. JGL is whatever. Bane though...the gift that keeps on giving. "That would be very painful." "You're a big guy." "For you." What in the world? His voice, the way he talks, it just all sucks. His lines are terrible but I've seen this movie so many times I've come to love them. The born in the darkness bit, no one cared about me until I put on the mask, just classic stuff. Not in a good way, but classic nonetheless.

It's been awhile since I've seen this, but have been wanting to go through the Nolan Batman "trilogy" since we started watching Batman: TAS on HBO Max.

Bane works because of Hardy to me. Which is weird because you can't see half his face and normal expressions any other actor would use and take for granted. Catwoman is the MVP here easily, though. There's definitely some shoe-horns throughout and ultimately is the worst of the three films. I don't think I would call it bad film, but its nowhere near as coherent as Batman Begins and has a bunch of odd quirks to roll with and suspend disbelief for. I would suspect not being able to include the Joker in some way affected the shaping and/or re-shaping of the movie.

Bruce Wayne's characterization has always been off to me in all the films, but I think Nolan has done the best job of at least providing conflict and context. Whether that works overall is another point.

So I just watched The Breakfast Club for the first time in like 30 years. Still holds up! Enjoyed it. Some parts weren’t relevant in today’s society but still one of those iconic teenage angst must watch movies

For being a Batman film, neither Batman or his alter ego Bruce Wayne were in it very much. Which actually may not have been a bad thing. Michael Keaton was a bit robotic in this.

For it’s time it was really good. All we had before that was the fun and campy Adam West and Burt Ward Batman and Robin TV series (and movie).

Batman Returns was also quite solid for back then.

Then it started to get too campy again with Batman Forever (meh) and the dreadful trainwreck known as Batman and Robin (garbage).

Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy for me is the best Super Hero flicks (Begins and Dark Knight Returns in particular) of all time for my money.

So far I have not cared about Affleck’s Batman that much.

Yeah I remember enjoying it as a kid, and I still enjoyed it now. Keaton's performance was the one that I was most disappointed and surprised by. Jack really carried it.

Also, I guess they never said that this Batman doesn't kill people, but I still found it funny that his batmobile and batplane both had machine guns and rockets, he drops a building on a group of badguys, throws another guy off a 60 story building, and then of course the thing with the joker at the end.

I've always held Val Kilmer in high regard in terms of Batman rankings. I thought his performance as Bruce and Batman was really good. Batman Forever isn't a great film, but I think it takes a bit more flak than it should, likely because Batman & Robin came on the heels of it and was so bad.

Aquaman

This was legitimately fun despite some of its shortcomings. Momao certainly has charisma and the film does a good job of trying to shade away from his limited range. The CGI is largely impressive here - which seems like a big step up from the other DC films of recent memory. The story is fairly basic and straightforward, but its fun even if rather trite. Nicole Kidman looking like Predator was great to see. A great popcorn flick and the culmination at the end was a cool moment.

I can agree with that. Val Kilmer was the best part of Batman Forever (and a super hotter than hot Nicole Kidman in her prime state of hotness).

Also Jim Carey was perfect as the Riddler.

Raiders of the Lost Ark...IJ is not for me. As soon as I heard the first whip noise and he took the gun out of dudes hand I was rolling my eyes. Put me right to sleep, I recognized the song though so I guess they at least nailed that.

You have to remember at the time it was released how original it was. Watching it after you know all of the references and imagery I would think can ruin it. Still one of my favorite lines didn't come from Ford ("Asps. Very dangerous. You go first.) Hated ROTLA 2. 3 was saved by a much better story and working in Sean Connery. 4 was absolute trash and completely obliterated the story line. Felt like a money grab at best. You don't need to see 2 to enjoy 3, I don't recall.

Gone Girl was fantastic until the ending .... what in THE hell was that? Next to zero closure. I don't mind movies that hang at the end but this was pretty ridiculous.

Lucky Number Slevin -- man what a cast. Nice interplay of the characters. Josh Hartnett such a likeable actor. Just the right dash of comedy along the way. Well done.

Started to watch Once Upon The Time in the West and just couldn't finish it. I thought some of Clint's spaghetti westerns were slow, but this was a boring crawl. If there was more dialogue maybe I could've hung but this was incredibly drawn out to a fault. Couldn't make it.

I first saw this movie back when it first came out, and have loved it ever since. I actually wrote a quick impression for somebody on Quora asking about movies that flew under the radar in the past thirty years, and this is the one that I thought of first. Here's what I said:

This film stars Josh Hartnett, Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Stanley Tucci. It had a $30 million budget and only made $56.3 million worldwide, which is by all accounts a big loss for The Weinstein Company (which some might consider karmic justice by today’s standards, but let’s not hark on the film for that).

This movie is about a man who is mistaken for his friend who needs to scratch a debt with two rival mobsters. It has a tightly woven narrative that reeks so much wit & coolness in its dialogue, and taste & sleekness in its production design. Every line and item matters and is paid off in some way by the time the credits roll. It has a somewhat “timeless” feel to it, like it will still work forty years from now and it could have worked forty years ago.

It is one of my favorite films of all time, anyone I have shown it to was thoroughly entertained, and yet somehow it slipped through the proverbial cracks of national attention (nothing in its demographic really released around it, either). Some people who see it call it “try-hard,” but to me that’s unfair to say that this is and something like Pulp Fiction isn’t. I say just sit back and enjoy what you’re watching. To me, it’s like poetry in motion.

I’m a general advocate of IMDb’s overall user rating for non-blockbuster films, stating that if it has at least a score of 7.6 or higher then it is definitely worth looking at. Lucky Number Slevin sits at 7.7, with a solid 10 from me (I’ve only rated 21 of 385 films a 10 on IMDb, for comparison’s sake). I simply think that it is top-notch craftsmanship.

I don’t want to overrate it for you; I don’t think you’ll necessarily call it a 10. However, I am answering your question as far as “great movies that went under the radar.” I always hoped this would hit ‘cult classic’ status, but alas it has not yet been meant to be. Perhaps my post will open some of your eyes and you’ll give it a decent shot.
