    Never Back Down: 8.5

Execellent movie. Heard a lot of bout it when it came out and finally decided to watch it. So-So story with some pretty good action scenes and good enough acting.

Is it me or did does

    Sean Faris

Look a lot like Tom Crusie?

In that picture comparison, I can sort of see what you're saying. But I saw the previews for Never Back Down back when Cloverfield came out and I never considered that resemblance. Did it seem like that in the movie too?

REC- movie that inspired Quarentine. The two are almost completely identical besides a few small things. REC had a more horrifying feel to it though.

        Messengers 2- That was horrible.

The Orphan- I really enjoyed this one. Don't wanna give too much away but itas definitely worth checking out.

Dead Silence - Started off really creepy, then towards the middle slowed down. Then they tried to get a little too fancy with the special effects and killed it all the momentum that had been built. Still some really nice creepy visuals in there.

House of 1000 Corpses - I'm not really sure what to think about this film. A few key phrases spring to mind such as "****ed up" and "intense" but I don't know if I should like this movie and what Zombie attempts to do or not. I could see myself defending this film and Zombie's unique and somewhat artistic approach and genuine reverence for the horror genre, while on the other hand lambasting the film for not exactly coming together enough for it all to fit well and turning his unique approach on its head and settling for clichéd scenes and results.

The build up of the first half is, aside from Captain Spaulding, the best part of the film. Each introduction of another family member just adds a layer of insanity and dementedness until it busts wide open when Otis is let out. The first half is awkward and uncomfortable, creepy and twisted, and at times humorous (both genuinely and nervously). The second half loses steam for me as the tension build up that was done wonderfully in the first half is almost completely left out. It seemed obvious to me what was going to happen to each character. The first half of the film created tension despite that fact; however, the second half seemed to settle for the inevitable and rushed towards the end. Even the little "twist" at the end didn't seem eye opening or have any dramatic flair to it.

Reminds me, I should go find The Goofy Movie in my VHS collection. Takes me back.

As for my daily movie watching, I watched Spider-Man 3 today. I seem to have noticed that IMDb users wanted to compare SM3 to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. They simply don't compare. While Sam Raimi should have removed some scenes, the magic that is Spider-Man was still there. I may be the only user on this message board that likes the movie, but I can live with that.

If I think of SM3 as a living rendition of a comic book format, I can live with that (I just don't like seeing my "That 70's Show" characters pose as villians!). SM2 was just a tighter story and presentation all the way around without losing that comic book element (such as SM and Ock spinning around and fighting in mid-air as they did in the books). I'm still amazed how well they captured the Sandman special effects, especially when he first turns.

I watched Martin Luther (1953) the other day and it was interesting. I won't go into a long review as it deals with religion and such but it was an intriguing little film. This movie was a multi-national collaboration and was actually financed by the Lutheran church!

I don't know any of the actors but the guy who played Luther was quite convincing and so was the actor who played Spalatin. Anyways it kinda got bogged down near the end of the movie but it held my interest. I'd say it's a curio which while financed by the church didn't go around beating you over the head with the Lutheran ideology.

Magnum Force - Dirty Harry returns. The film as a whole didn't feel as gritty as Dirty Harry, but Clint was still on point as Harry Callahan. There is more action compared to Dirty Harry, but I didn't think the crooked cops were as interesting or developed as good as Scorpio. Still, the movie is enjoyable and Inspector Callahan never disappoints.

The Enforcer - I had the same problems with The Enforcer as I did with Magnum Force. The terrorist group wasn't developed well at all, as their motives were generally unclear throughout the majority of the film. Clint is still just as enjoyable as the first two films, though Callahan seems to be actually having a little bit of fun with each run in. His partner in this film was probably the most interesting thus far.

Haunting in Connecticut - Had a lot of jump moments but that stuff doesn't do it for me anymore really. I found the best parts of Dead Silence to be a whole lot scarier though Haunting was better as a complete movie. Dead Silence had some terrible acting (Sorry Donnie "Drama" Wahlberg)and at some point felt rushed. The pacing in Haunting was a lot better, as well as the acting.

Oh and why does Donnie Wahlberg seem to play the same cop in all these movies? In Saw II, What Doesn't Kill You and Dead Silence it's like he's playing the exact same dude.

Except his facial hair seems to grow at a rapid rate in Dead Silence.

And I suppose you haven't seen Righteous Kill but he plays a cop in that movie as well.

Just got back from watching "The Collector." As expected, a pretty crappy torture-porn thriller, but it was entertaining as hell mostly because of the group I was with.

There's so much over-the-top gore that even a room of bear traps is involved.

I'd suggest it if you just want to shut your brain off and chuckle a bit with some friends, but it is indeed a ****ty movie.
