Hacksaw Ridge was consistently good throughout. Vince Vaughn was convincing as a sergeant who was actually written realistically.

This is a very American true story about the first conscientious objector to receive the highest military honor (Medal Of Honor) and surprisingly 90% of the cast is Australian-of course that might be a reflection of director Mel Gibson having grown up in the US and Australia.

War Dogs. Quite good. Fantastic cast. Even if the story is half true, it's crazy.

Grumpier Old Men. Wanted to watch something that I knew would be good. I never knew a movie could be so endearing and charming while having the word "dickhead" in it at the same time!

Are you saying Liar Liar is not endearing or charming?

Ya, but it's old man endearing vs. little kid endearing....sprinkled in with Sophia Loren hotness even at that age (she was 61 there).

Sophia Loren is gorgeous, and yes, awesome movie.

I tend to watch movies I've seen before. My wife isn't a big fan of movies because they are two hours long and if the ending is unhappy she feels she wasted two hours.

Mr. Church. I wasn't crying...it was just raining near my eyes.

Overall it was a well done drama. Certainly a different role for Murphy who brought in a respectable performance.

I liked Mr. Church as well, Murphy did a fine job and should pursue more roles like this. Really liked the shots of the food and cooking too.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

The other night I watched a pretty good B+ western (or maybe more appropriately mountie flick) starring Alan Ladd, Shelley Winters and J. Carrol Naish entitled Saskatchewan (renamed O'Rourke of the Royal Mounted) from 1954. What also makes this little film stand out that it's directed by Raoul Walsh who was one of the bigger name directors of the 30's and 40's. I either didn't know or remember the fact that he did a Universal-International film. At this point in time Universal wasn't quite a full fledged "A" studio but it was getting there.

Anywho, Ladd plays O'Rourke an inspector who defies the orders of his commander as said commander had caused problems with the Cree Indians by confiscating their guns and thus pushing them toward an alliance with the Sioux who had just wiped out Custer. Prior to finding out about this Ladd meets up with Shelley Winters who was part of a group that was wiped out by the Sioux who are making their way up to Canada for the purpose of their alliance with the Cree and to obtain more land in western Canada.

Ladd is excellent here, stoic and honor bound as ever. Shelley Winters is actually more subdued here than in some of her other roles as she often portrayed women that if you read between the lines can be interpreted as being butch. Here, she's running from the law as she's accused of murder. Well, the law catches up with her in the form of Hugh O'Brian who really played up the possessive and meanness of his character. The bulk of the movie details how Ladd overtakes command from the commander and leads the group on a safer route to the US border in order to stop the Sioux.

This is a beautifully filmed movie. There are scenes shot in what looks like dusk with fog mixing in beautifully with the green grass and trees. In fact, this is probably one of the best westerns in terms of maximizing the location shooting. The film says it's shot in Saskatchewan but trust me, there are no mountains and foliage like that to be found there. Despite that inaccuracy this is a beautiful film to look at with solid acting and a not too bad story. I like that the typical "lead having a romance with the female" cliche doesn't really get used here which is good as it allows the movie to deal with the matter at hand without too much manufactured melodrama.

Fine film and if you can find it and enjoy westerns you'd like it.

Captain Fantastic. This one left me conflicted. I can definitely see things from both perspectives. I think the ending was a bit too storybook, but definitely a unique story all around.

Finally got around to seeing The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2

It was very good. I loved the first movie liked the second, but did not like the long winded set up of Mockingjay part 1.

Part 2 was redemption. My second favorite film in the series.

Funniest moment was the opening narrative when the guy showed the "Miss America 1830s" or whatever the heck it was. His little "Holy ****" had me in stitches.

Rest of the film couldn't live up to that. I recall a funny part during the shooting training montage, but I forget what it was. I think it was when he was shooting at the can point blank and was still missing or something.

                              I liked Charlize Theron though.

I've been meaning to see that for a long time now mainly because I always like to see what people do with my favorite genre but yeah, westerns and comedies don't usually go well except for the great Blazing Saddles and Support your Local Sheriff/Local Gun Fighter movies with James Garner.
