Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Maybe recency bias, but my new MCU rankings:
    Avengers Infinity War
    Avengers Endgame
    Captain America Winter Solider
    Avengers 1
    Captain America Civil War
    Guardians 2
    Black Panther
    Ironman 1
    Guardians 1
    Captain America First Avenger
    Thor Ragnarok
    Captain Marvel
    Spiderman
    Thor 1
    Avengers Age of Ultron
    Ironman 2
    Antman
    Antman 2
    Thor Dark World
    Ironman 3
    Doctor Strange
    Hulk
Maybe Endgame could be 1, I'm going back and forth on rankings.

I hope it all fits in a way that I happened to see Endgame the night before gm5 of NBA finals. Ending of Endgame gave me some good memes to use based on what happens tomorrow.

The way this has been going, I'm waiting for Uncle Drew to show up in someone's MCU list here!

Saw MIB. It was fine. There was an awesome Avengers reference. Gave me a nice laugh.

Also saw Shaft. Very entertaining. Samuel L. is still awesome.

I'm assuming it was the same reference they showed in the trailer?

              Inception

Man I love this movie. Hadn't seen it in awhile and snagged the 4k UHD copy. It looked amazing. Such great story telling. Definitely one of my top movies of all time. I love the ones that make you think.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Yeah, I've decided it's likely my favorite movie.

                Anyway, saw a triple-feature yesterday.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

I find the first two to be just okay. I like the motive through the first one and the lore behind Wick as the Baba Yaga, and once I found out the second one was a repeat of the first one regarding the gun-fu, it didn't do much for me until the end how it set this one up. That's what I looked most forward to here. In realizing this would essentially be the same as the other two, I think this one handled the elements better because there is a lot more hand combat (or use of weapons other than just guns). I was smiling pretty much the entire film. It was just a delight to watch, through and through.

What I didn't like about the movie is how it seems that pretty much the whole world is filled with nothing but secret assassins. I am fine with them being throughout the world, but it felt like that's all the world had. That homeless guy is one, that cab driver is one, that doctor is one... it just took away the feel that it was an "underground" thing now that pretty much every corner in which you turn is someone who is somehow involved.

Also, although there are some people who seriously fanboy over Wick, the two sequels are missing something that the first film had, and it was expressed in a dialogue exchange between two other characters:

"I heard you struck my son."
                "Yes sir, I did."
                "And may I ask why?"
"Because he stole John Wick's car, and killed his dog."
                "... Oh."

That last line really says it all. John Wick is the most feared individual on the face of this planet. Yet, in the second and third film, even with a $15 million bounty on the line, people should essentially know better than to pursue Wick lethally. It will just never end good for them.

Anyway, I'll keep watching more of this series if they push more out, but what I was really hoping, after the first film, was if they did a prequel next when he was working in his heyday, and then if a second sequel was basically a combination of the last two (working toward a bounty then trying to evade assassins going after him). That's not to say I didn't like what I saw here, but I think something like that would have been a tighter weave of narration.

                Godzilla: King of the Monsters

I won't say much about this, because I only saw the first film once and haven't seen anything else Godzilla-related outside of that. I will venture a guess however that this was a major callback to the previous Godzilla entries of yore with all of the other titans in this thing, so my best guess is that this one was for the big Godzilla fans.

The visuals were spectacular, and that's about all of the good I can say about the movie. Sadly, a lot of it came at the expense of every single individual showing complete disregard for human life in every way possible. Our world's infrastructure is basically now in shambles over how things are handled here. It's one thing for monsters to just rendezvous in a city and fight, and it's another for them to be invited and lured into those areas on purpose, and for the movie to not make any attempt at making us or the film's characters bother to care about any such loss of life or property. Man of Steel had the same issue, slightly retconned in Batman v Superman; Captain America: Civil War also finally showed us that Quicksilver wasn't the only person to die in the Manhattan or Sokovia battles from the first two Avengers films, lol.

Anyway, somebody else had mentioned the bits between the action were boring, and before seeing it I kind of said to myself: "I normally like those bits." However, here, it's not that they were boring/exciting, it's that they were terribly written. Character arcs evolved far too rapidly and radically, certain motivations were ridiculous (with or without explanation), and actions were completely nonsensical. This isn't a matter of me "not checking my brain at the door," this was in your face stupid. Think like the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom stupid, only much, much worse. I'm certain that Vera Farmiga once had to look up from reading the script and said: "You're kidding, right? I have to say these things?"

Overall, I did not like this movie. They didn't care enough to have me care, and although the giant monsters look absolutely stellar, that's about all I can go with and it's just not enough for me. Definitely the stinker of the evening in my book.

                Dark Phoenix

I included a short blurb in its own thread, but basically I liked this movie a pretty good deal. Through and through, as I watched it, I was kind of saying to myself: "Hmm, something must end up turning pretty sour soon, because so far I have nothing but good things to say about it." Nothing that bad ever turned up. I thought for a moment that it was going to end earlier than I had hoped that it would, and thankfully there was still another small chunk to go that ironed that out.

I think the small things that won me over were involving two female characters: Raven and Jean. I for one happen to be sick of Mystique after the past six X-Men films giving her a lot of focus (actually Apocalypse didn't too much either, so I guess that's why I was slightly good with that too heh), especially since Days of Future Past was basically her film when it wasn't Wolverine's. To shoo her away from the majority of the spotlight like Cars 3 did with Mater was a good, big plus in my book. Also, I hated Sophie Turner as Jean Gray in Apocalypse... though I still don't know why. Maybe it's because she looked nothing like Famke Janssen, or maybe her hair was too light... something about her performance just wasn't on for me. Sophie really turned things around this time, though. I loved the ocular performance that she gave, enhanced in post-production for sure, but she really led this film well for me. Jessica Chastain also had a nice role in this film, in that she played somebody completely different from what she normally plays.

Nightcrawler finally gets to do some fighting again, which we haven't really seen since X2 (and his father in First Class wasn't quite as cool to me). I did not like the whip crack sound effect they used for him to teleport, though. He was definitely among my favorites after seeing X2, so I geeked out when seeing him in action in this flick. Beast actually has some fighting moments where, for once, I saw some more visceral moves; normally we kind of just see him floating around, and I always saw him as an inferior fighter to the rest (maybe because we don't get to see an R-rated version where he can just maul people), but they did better with him this time. Quicksilver had nice moments early on, but unfortunately much like DoFP he eventually just leaves, for everything could have been "too easy" with him around for all we know. This one dude fought with his hair, which I thought was X1 Toad kind of bad, but thankfully he's not a prominent character. Magneto also does one or two cool moves which I think are his best since First Class's knife bit at the Ratskeller or piercing the quarter through Sebastian Shaw.

I can tell this movie underwent reshoots, though. I think parts in the beginning and end had the most changes. Yet still, there were two parts in the middle of the film that should have been better included in the writing:

                Spoiler

                #2
                Spoiler

Anyway, as said by somebody else, this film really doesn't get us into X1 (2000) very well, by character's ages or anything else (even Storm's accent), but I think part of the idea was it was going to create its own new "timeline" of sorts anyway, which is fine with me. I'm interesting in seeing what Marvel does tying them into the MCU, but personally I think I will like the 20th Century Fox versions more, even though they are not perfect films by any means. Even still, I had no massive problems with this movie, and for me it was very enjoyable.

I'd say my current rankings of these movies (not counting the two Deadpool films) are as follows:

                1) Logan
                2) X-Men: First Class
                3) X2: X-Men United
                4) Dark Phoenix
                5) X-Men: Days of Future Past
                6) The Wolverine
                7) X-Men
                8) X-Men: Apocalypse
                9) X-Men: The Last Stand
                10) X-Men Origins: Wolverine
                Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60

Thanks for the reminder, haven’t seen it in a couple years.

I remember having to see this a couple times when it premiered, I was so overwhelmed of the idea of the movie.

Ya no joke about having to rewatch. This is probably my fourth time watching it and still my brain starts to hurt at some points just trying to comprehend what they are doing lol. Even though I know what's gonna happen so my main focus is on how it all works.

Watched "Ordinary People" again on Prime. Really has held up pretty well. Young Timothy Hutton's performance was pretty impressive for his age. Of course, Sutherland and MTM are always very good. The one thing about this movie is the last scene with Judd Hirsch. Hirsch was born to portray a therapist, but his whole "I'm your friend" thing in their last scene ruined the genuineness. Therapists are not your friends. It's still a service and you pay them (which is what they talked around in the beginning). Outside of this, it's a great study of one family's dynamics. One could even say there was a hint of an Oedipal relationship between MTM and the older son.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I’ve been able to see a lot of movies recently because I work in a theater. Here’s what I’ve seen recently:

Booksmart: a clever, funny little coming-of-age story about two graduating high school girls. Entertaining, but it doesn’t have the same instant-nostalgic factor that American Pie has.

Rocketman: Can’t say enough positive things about this movie. It’s arguably better than the Queen biopic, although there are creative licenses that were taken to make Elton John look less of a diva. Regardless, a fantastic movie that I couldn’t recommend more.

Shaft: Don’t read a single review going into this because it’ll turn you off. I did this and really, really enjoyed the movie and its’ humor. It’s best seen with a friend, though.

Men In Black: International: Awful. The less time spent on this the better.

Toy Story 4: I was disappointed, but I understand why people liked it. It’s got humor and a very emotional and good ending. And it’s Pixar, so y’know, godly animation. But that’s all I can really say about it. Take your kids to see it.

From the trailer, Booksmart looks like it would annoy the hell out of me, showcasing 2 future neo-feminists with all the ensuing demands. Hard pass.

Do wanna see Rocketman very much. EJ has alway fascinated me ever since I read an article eons ago where, when he was at his addicted worst, made a comment about believing somebody should be able to do something about the rain on that particular day. There's tracks from him that are on my playlist and others that I cringe at. But he just seems like quite the interesting story. Plus, anyone that can poke fun at himself in a mock interview with Rowan Atkinson is okay in my book.

The first 10 minutes of Booksmart is very, very annoying but then you realize it’s her character and not an actual neo-feminism agenda. And I was actually inclined to explore Elton’s full repertoire after; honestly felt I gained respect for him after the fact.

Seeing Yesterday when it comes out, too. Will fill you guys in when I do.

the Dictator & Dinner for Schmucks is on Sony Crackle (Roku) for free. I had already watched Schmucks but watched it again anyways. and while Dictator is highly offensive, I enjoyed it still. (are you having a boy, or an abortion?)
Borat (or whatever his real name is) reminds me of Adam Sandler in some of the scenes from Dictator. I wished it would have ended similarly to Chaplins Dictator. love that speech.
