When I caught up with the show over this summer, I thought to myself that this was a well-written show more than it was a comedy. I got really caught up in the story of the mother before I was laughing at the jokes. Maybe it's just me.

I don't really see how you did that

The first two seasons had nothing to do with finding the mother. The first is about Ted's pursuit of Robin and the second is about his relationship with Robin. Given that the end of the first episode reveals that Robin isn't the mother, there was little in the way of detective work in those two seasons.

As far as I remember, Stella is the only real possibility of the mother (maybe you can count the chef who went to Germany, but that was a bit early to find out the mother and I didn't start watching until season 2).

It was quality when they had the cake decorator early on...sometimes Ted stories can be cool, just they have to do it more right...not just a quickie little ep with no stuff going forward.

Exactly. The cake decorator was quality. Hopefully tomorrow night they set Ted up with something so they can get his storyline moving. All they've established so far is that he's a professor and that the mother was in the econ class.

Marshall is still my favorite character on the show. Awesome episode for him. Still not digging the Robin-Barney centric episodes, too much, but at least they're getting better. The ending was hilarious.

After watching this season thus far, I'm on the boat for more Ted/mother episodes. The season hasn't been horrible by any means, it's just that it's not as great as it used to be. There are no more legendary episodes like slapsgiving, ncaa bracket, etc...

That was a much better episode. Marshal was a hoot throughout. The ending was funny as well. I wonder if they will carry Barny's "revelation" into the next episode.

I loved Tantrum....still not feeling Robin and Barney storylines though, hope they do something different with them soon b/c they're both amazing when they're side characters to Ted or Marshall.
