Thats fine if you feel that way but LED and LCD in terms of PQ does not match plasma. That is well stated by many in the expert field

Can LED get close in terms of black level or even surpass plasma...Yea the Elite does and perhaps the Sony high end can give better blacks but in terms of overall PQ there is no comp for plasma tv if you want reference quality.

If you choose to believe otherwise then that is fine as well.

Sorry but there are no reference plasmas on the market right now, because no plasma can do REC 709 perfectly. There is no display on the market that does REC 709. The last display to do it was the Pioneer Elite.

This thread is about helping people make a good decision and find great deals on TV's, and if they chose LCD they shouldn't have to feel like they are "clueless lemming" for that choice as you stated in your original post I responded to.

People buy TV's for various reasons, not always because they want as close to reference as possible

IMO, both techs have improved greatly and it simply comes down to wanted features and personal preferences. There is something in everybody's price range.

At the end of the day it's your money and what your eyes like.

I completely agree. A plasma may work for 1 in every 5 shopper. Now I may just do a little over the top to break in my plasma, but it does take patience and some knowledge. The average shopper doesn't feel like running slides for 100 hours or putting up black out shades. On top of that, getting it calibrated.

We've stated many times that plasma picture quality is the best, but that's only in ideal rooms. As far as REC 709 or more commonly known as BT709, it is in quite a few TVs these days. Panasonic owns Pioneer Elites rights as well, that's really when their plasma TVs took off.

When I bought my plasma back in May, I never ran slides or put up black out shades. I just watched everything in HD on full screen for the first 100 hours making sure not to leave images on longer than intended. I was very cautious during the first 100 hours. Was I wrong not to run slides?

Depends on if you wanted to get it professionally calibrated. It would be tough to get/keep things accurate if phosphors didn't age evenly, and that's not by a small margin.

If you're a guitarist, imagine getting brand new strings, untuned, and playing them for a few dozen hours just to "break them in," or what have you. Then you have some professional tuner comes in and make sure there it is tuned perfectly. Good for a few minutes, but it's going to jump right out per string. If you forced them into something where they were consistently in the same area while breaking them in, then tuned them, you'd fare much better.

Otherwise, you're "breaking in" just fine I guess.

No you weren't wrong. Owners run slides to help the phosphors age evenly. Plasma tech has come a long way from those days. Many owners don't run slides.

Like you said you were very cautious during your 1st 100 hours of viewing so I wouldn't worry

I did what you did on both my plasmas. No problems.

Noooo, it's just another way to eliminate static images. I broke my old Panny in with movies and it ended up just fine.

Yea slides are not needed, the good thing about slides is that you can just run them for 100 straight without turning tv off to get it calibrated but besides that you can just watch full screen content and calibrated later down the line

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I've been looking at getting a new TV for the better part of 6 months now. I've got it down to two (I think) and would love input from anyone that has knowledge of either of these.

The first one I'm looking at is here...

                        The second one is here...

My major concerns are ghosting, banding, and clouding.

I've had issues with LCD's before in this regard, especially banding. I just want something with crystal-clear picture that performs very well with fast-moving images and video games. I like the Sharp because its bigger but I want to optimal picture. I couldn't care less about all the 3D and Smart TV crap. I wish I could just pay for a TV without that junk. I'm sure that would bring the price down significantly.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

With that kind of budget, you are much better off going with a top of the line plasma and a professional calibration.

I went through 2 of the 65" before deciding to just get the 60" and stopping playing the lottery trying to get a 65" without vertical banding. I don't know if they fixed it yet, but is seems all the 65"s have some banding from visible to totally disruptive when watching sports.

The Sharp just can't match the Samsung picture.

Of course all the Plasma guys will tell you that you need a Plasma and sit and watch it in the dark.

The Sharp Quattrons are beautiful after being calibrated. Sharps can also be calibrated in game mode, ISF standards, where most Samsungs cannot be. The 60" Quattron is 1799$ right now and you get a free 3d Blu ray and 2 pairs of glasses.

Newer plasma screens have good anti-reflection filters. I watch mine in light all of the time, even with light coming in. My light is next to my TV though, not in the reflection at all, so I don't know how that would be. Whites aren't "shop mode" bright, but the picture is normally great.
