You can post criticisms without spoilers. It is entirely possible to include context. Or you know, spoiler tags.

I don't really see the issue.

So, the only way the below has value is if a reader chooses to spoil the movie for themselves?
      I hated the movie because:

      *insert spoiler tags*
Ironically, the way to write a review without spoilers is to include your personal emotions.

You could elaborate on why that is the case, but that sentence alone would spark a discussion of people agreeing or disagreeing.

Further complicating things is the issue is the specific content we're talking about here, movies/stories. It's a very delicate business in posting anything about a movie or story early on because even something like saying "it was slow" is technically a spoiler.
I don't know if "it was slow" is a spoiler since that's more so tone, but something like "it only includes X action scenes" is a spoiler for some since that's speaking about content.

I tend to stay thematic in my movie impressions. In Tenet, I didn't even go that far... I only really went as far as my overall reaction to watching it. I don't think that's that bad, though. Stating a character's fate at the end is definitely a spoiler, no matter what kind of movie it is. Other times, I only go as far as a trailer will go (or something you can be expected to know going into the film). My review of Crawl is about as "spoiler-y" as I'd get without using tags, which can be seen here.

Of course, people do understand that entering a specific movie thread can expect to get some content spoken of. I just think that since it has only just now released and theaters aren't really accessible, deciding whether or not to subscribe to HBO Max for this movie (I'm aware of free trials and cancellations) will help if I read some general impressions.

That's not really what I was saying.

The best reviews typically try and steer clear of outright personal emotions. I understand this is a message board and some of us are only capable of shaking our fists at clouds, but its entirely possible to expand upon your feeling to include legitimate criticisms without spoiling anything.

I think there's a reason why most of us tend to avoid "hot takes" when discussing team sports on this site. I would categorize those "emotional reviews" as hot takes.

I guess that's what I'm really getting at though. Emotions are intrinsically part of every review, every opinion, every reaction, regardless of content. So, while a "hot take" may seem extreme, it is following the same formula as any other reaction/review and therefore is just as valuable. If someone walked out of a theater because they hated a movie so much then that alone tells me "oh it must have been really bad". If someone tells me that he and the rest of the audience were cheering throughout...well my first thought would be ugh, why do people make so much noise in a theater lol, but my 2nd thought would be "oh it must be really good". I still need to see it for myself obviously to form my own opinion, but even though both instances were extremely simplistic and very emotional they both gave a pretty good impression to a potential movie watcher.

It probably also comes down to the medium of delivery. If we're talking about a TV personality who is probably paid to turn everything into the worst ever, then you have to take everything with a grain of salt. If you're on an internet forum with people who have no stake in this other than to have an outlet to expression their opinions on individual basis, then there is value when someone goes from "meh" in one instance to one of the polarizing extremes in aother.

The theme and overall vibe of the movie is certainly going to rub against the grain for many. Its a movie that hinges on an uplifting message and positive outlook on the world and humanity and for many, especially this year, that's a hard perspective to understand. To me, the movie harkened back to a time in entertainment where those positive messages and moral tales were common place. I don't want to make any comparisons to Donner's Superman, but I think the vibe was certainly more in line with that movie than anything of recent memory. The movie certainly based its message in the morals and character of Wonder Woman herself because there's altruism, positivity, and a campy charm that almost feels rare now. It certainly hit home with me and worked overall. There were some wide brush strokes for sure and any kind of analysis will easily bare them out, but the narrative worked for me.

I thought the cast was fantastic with the exception of Gadot. Any dramatic scene tumbles down a flight of stairs with her as the focus. She does have a sense of charm about her, but some of her scenes were painful. Pedro Pascal was fantastic and Pine was chewing scenery as usual. Wigg was fun, but I wish they had included her more in the middle of the movie and built up her alt-ego a lot more.

To me the most glaring offense were some truly bad action effects. It looked like Wonder Woman had one rope-swinging animation they used for the whole movie. Not to mention any running shot of her was covered up as much as possible to avoid that awkward image.

Anyway - I'm not going to defend this against the hordes, but I enjoyed the whole movie to be quite honest. Like most superhero films of the past 5 years I have no need or want to watch this again, but it is far from the bottom of the barrel many are calling it.
Well not ever superhero movie do I watch like again and again but there are a lot I do and this will not be one of those.

As was mentioned by someone else...

When I said I thought it was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time...that was not hyperbole and was entirely accurate. I really can't think of a movie I watched recently that i would say was worse than this [emoji23]

But in the interest of "discussion"...

-It was boring by superhero standards...that is to say that not all bad movies are necessarily boring (Justice League wasn't good. But i don't remember it being boring)

                    -It wasn't funny

                    -There wasn't any "wow" moments

                    -
                    Spoiler

                    -Special effects werent great

                    -Action scenes were whatever

-Inconsistencies with her during her conflict that bothered me
                    Spoiler

-The main antagonist story and abilities seemed disjointed and confusing...which I attribute to poor writing more than my own misunderstanding

-The second antagonist didn't really have any real character development and was super basic
                    Spoiler

-Recurring plot device from the first movie
                    Spoiler

-It simply did nothing well imo. And I was left lost a lot of the movie which was more annoying when I'm bored half the movie and disappointed in the other parts.

I'm hoping they do a movie primarily based on the Amazons and their culture/stories next. I've wanted that ever since that first scene in the first Wonder Woman (which was damn good fun and had the wow factor).

                        Just finished it.

                        5/10

I loved the first WW movie. Have watched it several times. This fell really
flat for me except the evolution of Cheetah.

I felt the movie simply had a weak plot and I would never watch it again.

One of the weaker DC films easily.

This movie had a $200M budget and currently only $120M at the box office.

                          So...

Surely HBO paying a huge contract to include it in their subscription? I'm just confused how the movie will make money.

They're not paying anything, it's an in house distribution HBO Max and Warner Bros Studio are both under the WarnerMedia group/AT&T umbrella. We'll probably find out in February how well it during it's month on Max, obviously it isn't going to generate as much dough from the streaming service as it would have if wasn't hated by so many folks.

Anyone ever noticed that often when they over advertise and hype a movie it's because the movie isn't very good and they are hoping to get as many paying customers before word of mouth and reviews spread.
